I have this cab I picked up and want to get started on stripping it down to bare metal. make sure everything looks good and really get this thing ready for a nice primer and lots of paint.

What does everyone use to strip something like this down? What steps would you use? This body stuff is ALL new to me

I used these things they have for grinders or angle grinders they look kind of like a black scotchbrite and they strip paint fast and put hardly any heat. And if you have a strong compressor and a da you can use 36 grit if theres alot of paint and then go back with 80 or just 80 grit.

OR you could send it out to be media blasted or buy a setup to do it yourself... How much money do you want to spend?

I don't think it needs media blasted. It is fairly clean. I would however like to start getting the needed body a

Ill look in to both options today. Is stripping all the paint off a needed step?

no but yous aid youwould like to see all the underlying issues right?
well media blasting will remove ALL rust.. and it should cost you around 200 bucks..
sanding, smoothing, wirewheeling and bondo (to cover mistakes)
will take alot longer...
just my two cents...
plus sanding the crevices where the rust is hiding.. is a PITA...

i just recently started the same style issue wher ei wanted to just do some rust prevention, but i decided to drop off the parts to the media blaster... im getting a rad support both fenders(inner and outer) headers, and battery tray done for 100 bucks... (one hour's work)

I'm at the same stage with my cab, and have tried the grinding thing it's just a pain in the !#%. It takes to long and makes a freakin mess. Mines on a roll around frame that you can flip the cab up. So I have talked to a few body shop's and found a blaster. The guy there said it would be 200.00 to blast it. This is well worth it. I don't know what rout you're going to take but if you grind 1/2 way in you'll wish you blasted Besides you can only get so much because the grinders only fit in certain spots and if you think about it your going to spent alot on material and elec. plus your time. good luck oldno7

if you go to a blaster remember depending on where you live....humidity! the blaster takes everything off i have seen bodies start to rust (surface rust) on the way home from the blaster. i always spray picklex or use ppgs metal wash after blasting. you dont want delamination to occur

Same here (weather) I expect a neighbor to start on an ark any day now. When the rain does stop; humidity will be high till it dries out a bit. Just in time for the snow.

Ha! Send some rain my way. My lake is 5 feet low right now. And this is supposed to be high water time.

To strip any metal panel you are later going to paint I use 3M 'Sandblaster' pads in my grinder. Like oldno7 said it does take time and it does make a mess but for approximately $50 (two sandblaster pads and an 'adapter' for your grinder) you can remove everything on that cab yourself in your garage at your pace.

Remember, if it is humid or damp in your area, the bare metal will begin to rust immediately. Plan your work ahead of time so you can complete one area and get epoxy on it before you go to bed. I use the PPG acid stuff whether it sits bare over night or not.

Media blasting is the way to go. Its hard to grind/sand in all the nooks and crannies, and it takes forever. Blasting gets the metal real clean everywhere.
You just have to time it with the blasters (if you hire pro) where you can immediately get epoxy on it. Some blasters will prime also, but do some checking with there reputation and ask lots of questions on there prep work beforehand.
