80chevyshortbox 06-10-2009, 05:05 PM Hey i am a new member to this form, so i figured i would post up my build thread and some history on my 80 chevy.
trucks history-
this truck has been in my famley for about 5 years now. my dad bought it for my brother as a birthday gift for his 16th birthday. so he drove it for about 2 years then he bought a newer truck.
so after my broth bought his new truck he gave it back to my dad and he drove it for about a year. then stoped cuse he got a new car. so for the last 2 years it has sat in my backyard doing nothing and my mom has been nag at him to get rid of it and he could just never do that cuse he understands the value of this trucks.
so a cuple of months ago i he was just about to sell it when i told him i would like to have the truck, so he gave it to me. but me being only 14 i decided sence i have 2 years untell i can drive and i have 5 grand burning a hole un my bank i would rebuild it.
so me my dad and my grandpa got right to rebuiding it. now i have been i love with cars and trucks my whole life and saving to do a build like this my whole life.
Build-
so now its time to get into the build no more of this boring talking stuff.
so we puled the truck around into the garage and started riping it apart. with in the 2nd say we all ready had the motor out. so we sent it down to one of my dad's frends shop to get it rebuilt.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/244.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/249.jpg
so after we had the motor out one day my uncle came buy and did some body work. he got quite a bit done.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/246.jpg
so one day me and my grandpa decided to put a lowering kit on it. so he came over we riped of the box and stared to put in the 3 inch drop spindles and the shackles.
also figured i would paint up the rear end well we had the box off so hear is pics of the truck with the shackes and 1 leaf spring token out.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/260.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/261.jpg
after that we instaled the spindels.

80chevyshortbox 06-10-2009, 05:06 PM back on solid ground
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/321.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/318-1.jpg
then we got the motor back
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/009.jpg
and as of right now all that i am doing is smothing down the firewall so i can paint it and put the motor back in.
thanks for looking and sorry for all the speling mistakes
fiyaweed06 06-10-2009, 05:24 PM never mind the spelling man,its ok we're gear heads not english teachers and i hate to re read some of my post.(lol)

lol thanks man.
80chevyshortbox 06-14-2009, 07:12 PM so we did some more work on the truck today. my uncle (the guy who is doing the work on the bodywork.) came back today and we got quite a bit of sanding done we also started to replace the cab corners.
cut out the rust
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/001.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/002.jpg
then we put in the new peace.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/005.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/006.jpg
then me and my grandpa decided to pull of the fender and pull the rad suppoort back into shape so the fender would line up right. (the old owner drove it into the ditch and bent it.)
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/003.jpgcan you see how its bent.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/004.jpg
we ended up getting it fixed and all back together but i dont have pics ATM. but all uploade them latter.
thanks for looking
tvblazer78 06-14-2009, 07:47 PM Motor is looking good! If I was you I would take the front clip off and paint the frame and inners good. It will make it pop!
80chevyshortbox 06-14-2009, 08:27 PM thanks man. ya you make a good point that would make it pop alot more.
JohnC 06-16-2009, 04:17 PM Looks good man, I'm subscribing. :agree: with tvblazer. If you already have one fender off, you might as well pull the other one and paint it all while it's all apart. Keep it up man!
80chevyshortbox 06-16-2009, 05:45 PM thanks man ya i am starting to think the same way with all the money i spent on the motor lol.
menace121978 06-17-2009, 08:48 AM nice progress bud. keep it up and you'll have something your proud of.
by the way, love the looks of that motor. whats the specs?
80chevyshortbox 06-17-2009, 04:32 PM nice progress bud. keep it up and you'll have something your proud of.

JohnC 06-18-2009, 06:53 AM That should be a pretty nice run around motor!
menace121978 06-18-2009, 07:41 AM thats pretty nice #. i would like to know what heads and cam he went with if you have time. thanks Dennis
80chevyshortbox 06-18-2009, 01:35 PM ya no problem. i am heading out to garage now to do some more work on the engen bay. all check and get back to you tonight.

JohnC 06-19-2009, 03:35 PM All that sanding looks good man. The cleaning will really be evident when it's all back together! What color are you going with in the engine bay?
80chevyshortbox 06-19-2009, 03:39 PM i am not to shure yet. i am thinking just black, but everyone keeps telling me do it the same as the truck. so im not shure what im gona do yet but every one is starting to make sense cuse i have two years before the truck has to be runing and it would make it look way better.
what do you guys think i should do.
JohnC 06-19-2009, 03:50 PM I like both ways. The black will go with just about any color, and that orange engine will really POP. The advantage of painting it the same color as the truck is that it tends to flow better. What color are you going with again?
menace121978 06-19-2009, 03:50 PM body color imo. but... some guys like to go black to hide the wiring and make the heater/fan box blend in better.
menace121978 06-19-2009, 03:52 PM oh yea, with what ever you decide its gonna look killer w/ that motor sitting in there.
80chevyshortbox 06-19-2009, 03:54 PM I like both ways. The black will go with just about any color, and that orange engine will really POP. The advantage of painting it the same color as the truck is that it tends to flow better. What color are you going with again?
i am going with speedway blue.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e123/OR_IS300/IMG_0709.jpg
JohnC 06-19-2009, 03:57 PM Wow that's a great color. Like I said before I think both ways would look good. If you aren't going to paint it for a while you could always paint it black now, and then when you paint the truck paint it the body color then. It's more work, but a maybe an option.
80chevyshortbox 06-19-2009, 03:57 PM oh yea, with what ever you decide its gonna look killer w/ that motor sitting in there.
thanks man. ya i cant wate tell it goes back in. i am also so jacked to hear it run.
80chevyshortbox 06-19-2009, 03:59 PM Wow that's a great color. Like I said before I think both ways would look good. If you aren't going to paint it for a while you could always paint it black now, and then when you paint the truck paint it the body color then. It's more work, but a maybe an option.
ya that could work. i think im just gona do it black tho it will save me lots of truble.
80chevyshortbox 06-21-2009, 09:26 PM body man came back yesterday and today and got alot done. he finished the cab corner on the right side of the truck he also finished the whole right side of the truck.
then me and my dad ripped out the sun roof and also the front window.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/006-2.jpg
JohnC 06-22-2009, 01:56 PM He did a great job on that cab corner!
80chevyshortbox 06-23-2009, 12:36 PM ya man it came out awsome. i am jacked on progress i cant wate to see it all done and painted.
80chevyshortbox 07-05-2009, 06:58 PM so i havent updated this in a long time. we have gotten lots done in the last cupple of days.

menace121978 07-05-2009, 07:10 PM nice progress! the body and fire wall looks great man...
80chevyshortbox 07-05-2009, 07:13 PM thanks man. im very happy with how it looks two.
JohnC 07-06-2009, 07:38 AM Looks great man. You have made some great progress. The firewall turned out nice. You'll be glad you took the time to clean up all the engine compartment while the engine was out. Keep the updates coming.
80chevyshortbox 07-06-2009, 05:26 PM so a long time ago my grandpa bought some racing seats for 25 bucks at a garage sale. so he gave them to me for my truck, so today we kinda mocked up a console and one seat.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/001-5.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/002-4.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/003-4.jpg
80chevyshortbox 08-03-2009, 11:07 AM so i havent updated this in a while so hear it is. i have been doing quite a bit of work on the truck in my free time, we got the seats all bolted in and we made a center consol (still needs to be wraped in vinal), i orderd some 4 point racing seat belts, i painted in side the wheel wells with asphalt under coating, i sanded down the whole interior and fire wall so they are all ready for paint now.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/028-1.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/029-1.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/030-1.jpg
and a pic of the motor agen cuse its about to go back in once the engen bay is all painted. im gona order the paint soon.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/017-3.jpg
JohnC 08-03-2009, 03:28 PM Looks good man. Little bits at a time! It is coming along nicely.
80chevyshortbox 08-04-2009, 06:07 PM thanks man ya slowy things start to come together and starts to look great lol.
manimal 08-06-2009, 10:25 AM looks good. Is your engine a 305?
80chevyshortbox 08-06-2009, 11:59 AM thanks its a 350.
GMC Guy 08-28-2009, 12:56 AM how's the truck coming along? lookin really good so far!
80chevyshortbox 08-28-2009, 10:51 AM not bad its going really slow lol. but yesterday we got the engen bay all painted so now we can start to put the motor back in after i finish painting the frame. all upload pics of the engen bay asap.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/096.jpg
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn280/sam-thrasher/097.jpg
menace121978 08-31-2009, 10:44 PM looks real good man! worth all that time sanding for sure!!
Damien 09-01-2009, 10:20 AM As long as you have the interior out and are adding racing seats and harness, I would put a roll bar in. Then you will have a good place to mount the harnesses. I don't think I would go with a full cage.
80chevyshortbox 09-01-2009, 04:39 PM thanks menace and ya it turned out great except the runs we ran out of paint in some places so im gona get more and then i can fix the runs.
damien- i would man but im on a budget and i know it wouldent cost much to do one i just think i dont need one cuse it dont evan got posi the racing seats are just for look. one day all do it right and do a posi and put an ls1 in and some bags lol jks maby when i have some money.
80chevyshortbox 10-02-2009, 02:03 PM k finally starting to move along with the build. got the rest of the engen bay painted also paited all the interior and door jams then welded in a patch in the box to fix rust and got the roll pan put on.

JohnC 10-02-2009, 02:12 PM Truck is looking good man! Keep that momentum ball rolling.
80chevyshortbox 10-02-2009, 02:18 PM Truck is looking good man! Keep that momentum ball rolling.
thanks man and ya im trying lol, its kinda hard tho cuse the body man dosent come by very often any more so im kinda just trying to learn how to do the body work my self but the box is almost ready for primer that will be another big step.
how is your truck coming did you get started on it yet?
JohnC 10-02-2009, 04:07 PM Yes and no. I have the engine ready to pull out. Just got to get the hood off, and get a yoke to stick in the tranny so it doens't puke everywhere. The new engine is built and ready for paint. Just got to clean up the engine bay, and slap it in.
80chevyshortbox 10-02-2009, 06:04 PM thats sick man. how big is the motor and what hp are you thinking its gona have.
JohnC 10-05-2009, 08:27 AM It's a 350 4 bolt main. We put a Comp Cam's Thumpr Cam in it. Sounds mean, but doesn't lose vacuum. It has 202 heads, edelbrock intake, and 600 edelbrock carb. I'm not sure on HP. I didn't want to get too crazy on it, and looking back probably could have went a different route, but it will be cool when I get it in there.
flamingbig10 10-05-2009, 01:52 PM nice work
palposity 10-06-2009, 07:03 AM I love that blue! Great choice!
Chlsnk 10-06-2009, 08:12 AM Is that 140 MPH Speedo stock? Edit never mind Jus saw it was KM. Sorry had alittle brain fart.
80chevyshortbox 10-07-2009, 02:15 PM thanks guys and ya i cant wate to see it done and see the colour in the sun.
80chevyshortbox 11-04-2009, 10:54 PM truck went to the paint shop today. dident get any pics but it shure did look awsome on that flat bed lol. im gona head down to the body shop friday and snap some pics of it. im so excited.
68GMC454 11-05-2009, 01:27 AM your truck is looking good an that blue is sweet.........
JohnC 11-05-2009, 02:01 PM Looking forward to the pics of it after paint! :metal:
80chevyshortbox 11-06-2009, 02:32 PM well some bad news. i got a phone call today and they told me that my frame is bent. im not to shure where it is bent but i think its under the cab. any way they are having trubles getting the box to line up and the fender curves out a bit when you look down the body line. they are saying that it is out of wack about 2-3 inches. but they are gona continue to paint it and see how it turns out. all keep you guys updated on it.
JohnC 11-07-2009, 07:27 AM Man that's a bummer. I don't know much about bent frames, but maybe it can be straightened. Keep us posted.
80chevyshortbox 11-07-2009, 09:27 AM ya i have no clue about how to fix somthing like that but this one dude is saying they can just throigh it on a frame michine and fix it.
menace121978 11-07-2009, 10:15 AM yes it can be fixed. usually though, its fixed 1st after the crash and then new body parts are put on and aligned. its not really a good idea to do it after all new parts and especially new paint. there will be more damage to the new parts when you put it on a frame machine and start pulling it straight. make sense? in my opinion it would be best to look out on cl for a cheap straight frame or parting out truck and swap everything over.
flamingbig10 11-07-2009, 10:59 AM well some bad news. i got a phone call today and they told me that my frame is bent. im not to shure where it is bent but i think its under the cab. any way they are having trubles getting the box to line up and the fender curves out a bit when you look down the body line. they are saying that it is out of wack about 2-3 inches. but they are gona continue to paint it and see how it turns out. all keep you guys updated on it.
mines the same, also the front suspension is pushed to driver side but I found several almost complete short beds in my area for $500 then the good thing is you could part it out and make your money back
80chevyshortbox 11-07-2009, 10:59 AM i get what you are saying thats makes sense. but i just dont know what to do i would love to get a new frame and swap it all over but that is a big project and i have no money. i just finished paying of the motor and now im in the hole 2 grand in paint and stuff like that.
so im at a stand what do i do still tell them to just pait all the body parts but the cab. then buy and swb truck with a clean cab paint the cab and swap all the parts over.
or do i risk it and send the truck to get it fixed at a frame shop and risk screwing up my paint that i just spent all my money on getting painted.
or do i sit on it build up my money and start on the truck in a year agen. with a clean frame and get the new frame sand blasted and paint it.
80chevyshortbox 11-07-2009, 11:04 AM mines the same, also the front suspension is pushed to driver side but I found several almost complete short beds in my area for $500 then the good thing is you could part it out and make your money back
ya i see what you are saying so you did end up fixing it?
flamingbig10 11-07-2009, 11:16 AM not yet, it really hasn't bothered me till now
80chevyshortbox 11-07-2009, 11:21 AM ok well im just gona wate and see how it plays out the paint shop said they are just gona paint it and try and get the body parts to line up the best they can. so i should be getting the truck back late next week and i guess all just see then.
mwooten92 11-09-2009, 11:08 PM hey man nice build. im going with a vista blue on my 85 chevy c10 its a bit darker then ur blue. but ur blue sure is pretty
silvereagle07 11-10-2009, 07:21 AM The paint looks good , but a bummer on the frame. Let the frame shop decide on what to do. Find a good shop and they can have it square again.
80chevyshortbox 11-12-2009, 02:15 PM thanks guys. ya hopefully we can get it into the frame shop next week. they are saying they should be able to fix it with out messing up the paint.
any way hear are some pics from before it went to the body shop.
