View Full Version : Newbie - '86 C10 Long
Citrix 08-25-2009, 09:46 AM Hey all, my name is Ben...
Long story short, got turned onto this page by Joe231, cause i am buying an engine from him..
Want to be sure everything lines up....
I have a 1986 C10 with the 86 305 in it right now...
Well it knocks louder then a hammer against a pan full of potatoes.....
The engine is a 350 from a mid 70's car.
Will i have any problems fitting this to the transmission that is already on there?
The transmission is in good shape, had it reworked recently...
I have a list of stuff that i would like to do, but i need prices and places where i can get them.
1: There are alot of local muffler shops around, and i have taken a car to one in norman before.... Are there any local that anyone can recommend?
2: How would you guys recommend lowering the truck without using bags?
3: I am looking for a new bed (long bed) should i just go to a junk yard?
4: My bed is lower on one side then it is on the other, could this be a tweaked frame?
5: Paint shops: Does anyone know a reputable paint shop:
6: What is the C10 '86 bolt pattern for rims?
Tks all i will get pics of it up in a bit
jason65 08-25-2009, 11:56 AM DO NOT! I REPEAT, DO NOT GO TO MILLS BODYSHOP! They are crooked bastards.
Question #1 I used the one on Grey and Porter/classen. I think it's called University muffler.
Q2 Flip the rear axle, Drop springs and spendles in the front.
Q3 You can try.
Q4 Mabey.
Q5 See above comment and live by it.
Q6 5 on 5. 5 holes 5" across from each other.
Oh, and welcome dude.
Citrix 08-25-2009, 12:01 PM you the man lol... you know your stuff! :D
:randy:
jason65 08-25-2009, 12:13 PM The motor should be an easy swap. You runnin a th350?
Citrix 08-25-2009, 12:14 PM im sure i am ... gotta check later today lol someone already asked that :D
JohnC 08-25-2009, 02:28 PM Question #1 I used the one on Grey and Porter/classen. I think it's called University muffler.
....
That's Performance Muffler. University Muffler is a few more blocks South on Porter. I would recommend Performance. I have had several things done by them, and they are great guys.
Q2 :agree: with Jason
Q3 Salvage, or craigslist.
Q4 If it's not much lower then that is a common thing with these trucks.
Q5 There aren't many. If they are really good, then they are usually more expensive and covered up. If they are cheap, and not busy then there is a reason.
Q6 :agree: again with Jason
And also Welcome!
jason65 08-25-2009, 08:29 PM Citrix, I know where a donor bed is. $200.00 Let my know if you want me to hook you and this guy up. It's in Noble.

Yeah, I knew it was Peformance Muffler. Just seeing if you were paying attention John.
You should always agree with me John. I'm always wright.:sumo:
highperf4x4 08-27-2009, 11:17 PM A 350 and a 305 are identical with the exception of the size of the pistons and the crankshafts (although both cranks are the same dimensions) they are balanced different. Some 305's did have 56cc combustion chambers for 4bbl applications but they are light duty heads and crack easily. However, any small block will bolt up to your tranny given that you use your old flywheel. They all have the same pattern.
I've used both Performance muffler and University muffler. I have no problems with either one. University has been around here the longest and they put the new exhuast on my '72 from the manifolds back with all new brackets/hardware for 295.00 including new 36" glasspacks and 2.5" diameter pipes. It sounds awesome.
I don't have any recommendations on a body shop. I typically do my own unless it's an insurance situation and then I let them handle it so I'll have the lifetime gaurantee.
The difference in height on your rear end is probably a weak leaf spring. Like John said, it's common. I used an air shock as a temporary fix once. You can measure from the bottom of the frame to the top of the rear-end on either side to check your springs. If one side measures lower, you have a weak spring.
I'd go with Jason on the bed. That price would barely cover a tail gate.
I'd never lower a vehicle so you'll have to go with these other fellas opinions!
Jason is correct on the bolt pattern for your rims assuming your truck is a 2wd
Welcome to our crazy world. Glad to have ya and sorry to hear you're dealing with Joe. That guy's a crook!
Here's my new exhaust. It was all custom bent.

Citrix 08-28-2009, 06:39 AM thats not that bad for a bed, is it straight? The one i have on there has some pretty bad damage, i will take some pics either today after work or tomorrow.
I also have a crease in the metal where the body damage on the bed started, right behind the passenger door under the body line, that should be an easier fix then the damage on the bed lol...
Also, with the 350, do i have to change from 2 tanks to 1?
jason65 08-28-2009, 07:17 AM I haven't seen the bed. I'll see if I can get pix.
No. Just put the motor in. Out with the old, in with the new.
Citrix 08-28-2009, 07:25 AM Schweet....
mcbassin 08-28-2009, 08:12 AM Welcome aboard! This is the best site on internet for our truck info!
Like the guys said above, you tranny will mount right up. As far as body shops go....good luck. I paid a local guy to paint one of mine years ago. It was pretty cheap and that's what I got. (but it takes a long time to get it back) If you have any mechanical skills and don't mind getting dirty, you should just teach your self to do the body work. The painting is the easier part of it, It all starts at the body though.
Unless you are making a show rig, you should be able to get it done.
Heck, years ago I painted about 10 of them in a dirt floor pole barn. I'm not recommending you do that but, I'm just saying it can be done and the paint job can look really good. You will have dust particles even in a nice paint booth. (they buff out) good luck with your project. btw....we need pictures!
Citrix 08-28-2009, 08:24 AM lol i will! the bed on mine has some pretty weird rust patterns it sat for about 10 years on a farm collecting dust :D the original engine has like, 40k miles on it, but unfortunately, the insides are all torn up, threw a rod, barings r torn up.... and i know how to weld, so i am going to shave everything on this truck... I am sure the actual body work is not that bad :)
jason65 08-31-2009, 07:06 PM Ben if your interested in that bed pm me.
joe231 09-04-2009, 01:27 PM sorry to hear you're dealing with Joe. That guy's a crook!
is that supposed to be a joke?
not funny........
Citrix 09-04-2009, 01:34 PM haha i got a little weary... but if nethings wrong.... i know where you live....
lmao :D
joe231 09-04-2009, 02:10 PM
yeah I assume that is an attempt at humor by Travis, but you never know with him ;)
Citrix 09-04-2009, 02:14 PM Well, i dont really know him ... so i cant say yay or nay...
But hey we rollin for tomorrow right?
We are gonna take all the extra stuff with the engine off ur hands too :D
same stuff we talked about ...:chevy:
joe231 09-04-2009, 02:19 PM yeah, I will be loading up some stuff to bring home here shortly. Give me a ring tomorrow when you are heading my way
Citrix 09-04-2009, 02:21 PM well, just be there around the same time lmao.... i probably wont have time to call.... will be doing 50 million things -.-;;

yeah, this from the guy that used to wait for my responses before he said "oh, did I forget to include the smiley's in that last comment"?
I'm not kidding dude, I will tickle you till you pee!!!!
joe231 09-06-2009, 12:37 PM :haha:
sorry, I might have been a bit touchy about it :waah:
panties are un-wadded....all good thanks
jason65 09-06-2009, 02:44 PM Citrix, did you get the pics of the bed?
highperf4x4 09-06-2009, 08:23 PM :haha: <----- can somebody make one of these that's peeing?
joe231 09-06-2009, 10:00 PM
Citrix 09-08-2009, 06:39 AM Jason, I have pics of my truck bed... but my damn camera... i have to install some damn software... but i also have not gotten any pics from that one guy trying to sell his bed... sooo... ?
joe231 09-08-2009, 07:40 AM so how is the transplant going?
Citrix 09-08-2009, 08:31 AM Bah, i am stuck on the tranny boly second one up from the bottom on the driver side.... ive tried everything i could thing of and still cant get it out.
joe231 09-08-2009, 09:27 AM Have you tried a gear wrench? or a long extension with a wobble?
there are a couple tricks the pros use....do you have an impact?
there is a long extension that fits a 1/2" impact, and has 3/8" on the other end, it allows you to reach the bolts from the back.
The other way I know is to just pull the trans with the engine. It can be a bit more work but it is much easier to put the trans on the new engine outside of the vehicle.
Citrix 09-08-2009, 09:33 AM We might have to do that....
But yes, we do have an impact and we were using that.... when i hit the trigger on the impact, the wrench turns a tad, but then just blows air out like it cant move.....
joe231 09-08-2009, 09:43 AM sounds like the impact needs to be oiled, at the least, and maybe disassembled and cleaned.
Citrix 09-08-2009, 09:44 AM well, believe it or not... its brand new... only second time using it.....
joe231 09-08-2009, 09:48 AM what brand?
and did you oil it?
Citrix 09-08-2009, 10:09 AM no not sure, but it worked fine taking out the first bolt, including the exhaust bolts...
joe231 09-08-2009, 10:11 AM I would oil it.
you know how?
mcbassin 09-08-2009, 10:13 AM It might actually be easier to just drop the cross member and yank the tranny with engine. Well, I guess since your already that far along I assume you have taken the dust cover and flexplate bolts loose too? I prefer to pull the tranny out in most cases just because I hate trying to do just what you are doing. Either way your gonna get dirty! good luck!
Citrix 09-08-2009, 10:20 AM Getting dirty isnt my problem.... its my damn lack of experience and well... not knowing what to do in this situation..... and i would preffer not to pull out the tranny with the engine ... well cause that would be a PITA lol..
joe231 09-08-2009, 10:22 AM you might be surprised how easy it actually is to pull it all together.
Citrix 09-08-2009, 10:39 AM Next weekend, yall gonna come over and help? LMAO
jason65 09-08-2009, 11:18 AM Jason, I have pics of my truck bed... but my damn camera... i have to install some damn software... but i also have not gotten any pics from that one guy trying to sell his bed... sooo... ?
I'll get ahold of the hillbilly and and see whats up.
highperf4x4 09-08-2009, 12:18 PM Next weekend, yall gonna come over and help? LMAO
What's the problem with the bolt? You can't get to it or it won't break loose? I'll drop by and help ya get it out. I've never pulled the tranny with the motor except for once, and that was because it was trashed and I was putting in a new tranny.
Citrix 09-08-2009, 12:21 PM yea high, i cant break it loose... and it might just be a leverage thing..... but if you have any tools you think might help, bringem.... hit me up if you want the address and everything.
JohnC 09-08-2009, 12:22 PM As far as the impact goes. There are good impacts and cheap ones. Sometimes the cheap ones won't do anything like they are supposed to. I have one at the house that when it tightens all it has I can still put a ratchet on it and tighten some more. Just my .02
Citrix 09-08-2009, 12:27 PM hmm welll.... this one is blue and grey..... idk much more about it.... its filthy now lmao!
highperf4x4 09-08-2009, 12:27 PM Yeah pm the info dude, I'll help ya.
Citrix 09-08-2009, 01:20 PM pm sent.
mcbassin 09-08-2009, 01:27 PM Let me know if you can't get it out, I have a 300lb impact that will take it out or break it off for you.
Mike
Citrix 09-08-2009, 01:28 PM LMAO! thats win...
The problem may lie with the fact that we have a small ****ty air compresser that welll...... now leaks air!!! GRRR
Citrix 09-08-2009, 02:59 PM Got a few questions for yall once again...
I am looking for some inexpensive headers for the 350...
not exhause manifold, but headers....
year 73' - 87' ....
I am having a hell of a time
highperf4x4 09-08-2009, 07:47 PM http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9006/
bolts, gaskets, reducers included
joe231 09-08-2009, 09:31 PM yeah I'm willing to help too.
I have a Nitro Cat impact that has 1000 ft lb initial burst in reverse, and i have a portable compressor that seems to work nice...let me know
the main reason I am planning to pull my trans too is that it is a filthy mess under my truck. So the trans and the truck are both going to the car wash while everything is out...
Oh and Ben, be careful with Travis knowing where you live....I have heard stories of him streaking through people's yards at 4 in the morning just for fun  I'm just sayin'..................
highperf4x4 09-08-2009, 10:17 PM That was just your house and your neighbors enjoyed it.
joe231 09-08-2009, 10:34 PM :haha:
I always thought my neighbors were strange.... Now I know they are :D
highperf4x4 09-08-2009, 10:52 PM Yeah but that one guys thinks you're sexy when you take your shirt off in the driveway............ he has binoculars too...........
joe231 09-08-2009, 10:53 PM
Citrix 09-09-2009, 06:58 AM LMAO thread jacked!
but yea i have a little dual take compressor... sucks ass..... and if you guys dont mind helping lmao.... I have to say, i am definately not the most of organized people....
highperf4x4 09-09-2009, 11:55 AM I don't generally use an impact on something like that. Shock bolts maybe or crossmembers, bed bolts, etc etc. But I rarely touch anything on or in the engine with one. I like to use an air ratchet though after I have broken something loose by hand which is all you need right? To break the bolt loose?
Citrix 09-09-2009, 12:24 PM Yea..... ask joe, i am not a little guy.... and i am sure i didnt have the right leverage on this.... but still the first one came out fine... zip zoom done.
Citrix 09-09-2009, 02:28 PM hey i know what headers i am going to get, but what do you guys this of this for a low clean rumble, and a nice stout sound when taking off.
http://www.jegs.com/i/Dynomax/289/17554/10002/-1
highperf4x4 09-09-2009, 08:40 PM Probably sound pretty good but you don't want 3" inlet/outlet. Unless you're running a drag motor.
Are you running all new exhaust and are you just installing headers for looks/sound?
joe231 09-13-2009, 10:16 PM Did you make any headway this weekend?
We need some pics ;)
Citrix 09-15-2009, 06:38 AM 305 is out.... pics will come when i have time to grab them... had some... damn camera decided i didnt need them.
JohnC 09-15-2009, 08:15 AM Don't worry about excuses the guys don't listen to them, trust me. All the want is PICTURES!!!!
Citrix 09-15-2009, 08:18 AM lmao john.... We will see.... hey john you ever see a 2005 black mustang with an aftermarket hood on it in noble? Everything else is stock... ?
joe231 09-24-2009, 11:48 PM so...how is it going?
Citrix 09-25-2009, 06:36 AM So, we dropped in the 350 last night,
Just a few more touches before its ready to fire up.... and i did end up getting full length heaters.
joe231 09-25-2009, 07:35 AM So, we dropped in the 350 last night,
Just a few more touches before its ready to fire up.... and i did end up getting full length heaters.
it ain't cold yet  ;)
JohnC 09-25-2009, 08:15 AM :haha:
highperf4x4 09-25-2009, 02:54 PM it ain't cold yet  ;)
That just makes it worse, they're definitely going to heat up everything under the hood beginning with the starter.
Citrix 09-29-2009, 07:16 AM Okay... some BAD info... got the engine set in and everything.... well ... when we were bolting in everything... we ran into a little suprise....
The bell housing for the transmission has about a 12" chunk lopped out of it..... it was a crack that well, grew... quite fast... never got to fire it over or anything.... but now i am on the market for either a turbo 350 or a turbo 400 transmission....
JOE, still got that transmission? :P
joe231 09-29-2009, 08:01 AM dang, that sucks!
I have a transmission, but it is a 200R4 that needs a rebuild
Citrix 09-29-2009, 08:09 AM Well, is it an auto, and how much you willing to let it go for?
Citrix 09-29-2009, 08:40 AM http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy-Turbo-350-Transmission-6%22-Short-Shaft-2wd--400HP_W0QQitemZ350124221541QQcmdZViewItem
I know this will not work, because i need the 9" tail housing, but can i remove the 6" that they have on here, and attach the 9" from my transmission that i have?
