I know this has probably been covered in the past, but I'm wondering what would be the best / cleanest way of removing bad sections of panels to install new patches. I know a plasma cutter would be the best, but those things are too expensive for my blood at the moment. What would be the next best thing to use for good results? I've got an old cab to practice on before trying anything on the cab I will use. I'm new to this and would appreciate any input here. Thanks

Mike

cut-off wheel (or die grinder) is what I've used for years... you can get electric or pneumatic versions, in both straight and 90 degree models....

You can also buy an arbor adapter for your regular electric drill if you don't wanna spend alot...

I think the cut off wheel would be the cheapest alternative...just watch for heat build up..

I use a cutting wheel too. You have to have a compressor that will keep up with one though.

I have had the same question, but now what is the best, inexpensive way to put the panels back on, for example...rocker panels... I don't have access to a welder... thanx,
Derek

72dreamer, you gotta weld em back on, adhesive ain't gonna make it... maybe there's a board member in your area with welder who would be willing to help you out...??? Otherwise, you gotta pay a pro to do it...

thanx and no thanx, that is not what I was hoping to hear...what kind of welder would work the best?...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

72dreamer - I bought a 71 c-10 for parts a week or so ago ... the rockers had been replaced on it at some point. They were riveted on. It wasn't as unsightly as what I would have thought it would be but still nothing I would do. If I still had my bros digi cam, I would get pics. Maybe I can get it over the weekend and post them on here. I plan on welding mine in with a mig welder that I bought a couple years ago to play around with and to build some ramps for my trailor.

MIG (or wire feed) welder is the tool of choice for body work... you could rent one and practice on some scrap metal before doing the real thing... rocker panels would be a good first project since you don't have a significant amount of welding to do...
