Put this together to show how to do a drop in photoshop. This is not the only way, and not the fastest way, but it works well. Not saying that it is the best, just how I like to do it.

First step in to create a second layer of the target image.

To do this go to the layers window and drag the backround layer to the highlighted icon (new layer). This will make a copy of it.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:47 PM
the next step is to select the line selection tool from the toolbar.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:50 PM
use this tool to select the area from inside the wheel wells, around the bumper, and out to the edge of the photo, and then around the perimiter of the photo to the opposite side of the truck.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:51 PM
then select the move tool from the toolbar

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:53 PM
Then use your arrow keys to nudge your body over the rims and tires and put them into the desired position.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:55 PM
Then we will turn off the original layer to view the areas that need to be cleaned up.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:56 PM
you can see the checkered area needs to be cleaned

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:56 PM
we will use the rubber stamp tool to clean this up.

first go to and select the rubber stamp tool

cojnit
08-21-2003, 07:58 PM
then select an area with similar texture to the area you would like to clean. Do this by using the ALT ket and clicking in the area to be copied from. This should create a small (+) plus sign next to your target icon.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 08:02 PM
once you have selected the area to copy from, you can proceed to "paint" the trouble area with that new texture.

keep in mind that this tool uses your current brush size to determine the size you will copy.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 08:04 PM
you can continue this process until you are satisfied with the touch ups.

I then select the crop tool to trim out all of the unwanted "junk" on the outsides of the image.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 08:06 PM
use the crop tool to preview the new sizing of the image that will be left when you are done with the crop tool.

cojnit
08-21-2003, 08:10 PM
Hit the enter key to accept the new image size.

next you will flatten the layers

Under the LAYER menu, choose the Flatten image option near the bottom.

You are now free to distibute to all of your compadres!

Next time we learn painting!!!!!!

Excellent tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to do the screen shots. The only thing I would do different is after making the path around the body of the truck, I would delete the portion of the image with the wheels and ground. That way, you can move the body all around and not have to worry about the cloning clean up. You just simply move the layer on top (without wheels) down until you have reached the desired effect. You can also then put some black on a layer between the original and the one with out wheels to fill in the gaps where the wheel wells would be. Also, if you make a path around the whole truck using the path tool (on the path pallet) you can then use that path to change the color of the truck. If you do this, it is best to move the original layer up to give it a lowered effect rather than move the layer without wheels down. That way, your path stays in place.

cojnit
08-22-2003, 01:56 PM
For those who want to do the delete bouncy is talking about, after you make your selection, go to the select menu on the menu bar, and choose the inverse selction and it will select the exact opposite of what you chose originally.

I know it gets hard to read and follow, sort of like half knowing a foriegn laguage. but good luck.

if yo want to drop it quicker, you can just select around the bottom of the truck, like he did, and right click to free transform, then you can move it up and down to drop or lift it

Now where is the color change tutorial? :p

72chevyLWB
08-30-2003, 11:01 AM
color changing is fairly simple, select around the hole vehicle, you can edit out all the grills and stuff, go to on you top menue image, then adjustments, color balance, you can from there play around with all the colors, to get darker, use the burn tool, and to make it a brighter color just go back to the color balance, and for black or white, go to image, adjustments, chanel mixer, on the bottom of that box check monochrome, to the left is black, to the right is white. once you have your colors and you want something back to what it was, you can do art history brush and highlight what it is that you want back.

Thanks for the drop and color change directions. Now how do I change the wheels? I've been trying to figure it out, but it's just not working ("it" being my brain).

09-01-2003, 09:44 PM
for wheels, you just half to find thie right angle for the truck, once you have that you save it on to a different file open that , select the outer ring of the wheel, edit, copy, go the the truck you want to put it on, edit paste, highlight around the wheel, doesnt half to be exact, right click go to free transform , from that recize, stretch, rotate, do whatever you half to do, and after that do the same for the rear, kinda fast, but if you need more help, pm me

Your better off to use the path tool (looks like a pen) and create a new path. That way, you can change it if you mess up and not have to start over with the lasso. Once you have it all finalized, you can make a selection of the path. Also, if you use a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation) rather than going to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation, you can change/dupicate/remove it later for different effects.

It is always best to use the layers when ever possible. That way, you don't have to separtate it out again if you decide you want to make changes.

Here is a screen shot of what I do, sort of. This is at the end of the proccess and a lot of what I did can not be seen from this pic.

Click Here for a larger 1280x1024 view (http://www.zumografx.com/SS/ScreenShot.jpg)
http://www.zumografx.com/SS/ScreenShot800x600.jpg

As you know in Photoshop it's all about the layers. Try to do as much as you can on a separate layer. Remember that layer order matters too. I try to label every layer too so I can keep track. (Layer 4 in this image I forgot is the Wheel well shadow) If you look at this pic all the layer are labeled and are pretty self explainatory. Make the layer work for you. It's sort of similar to painting graphics with an air brush on cars. Start with the background and work you way up.

This one I consider one of my more simple photoshop files w/12 layers. I have some that run up to 50 layers.

Anyone care to add to this? Please do, I am no expert. Just trying to share the knowledge.

Zumo you're a Pro at this. I am always amazed at what you do and the final outcome. Just like this one. I was going down the layers and came to the original and was like " That's the real truck ?! " I am always amazed.

how do you separate/define the layers?

You can change their order by moving them up or down. That is done by just selecting the layer in the "Layers" panel and dragging them were you want them. Also always try and "right click" on anything and you may get more options.

I guess just being able to correct anything withou affecting anything you have alreay done. If you work better with out them then more power to you. I have come to find out there may be 10 different ways to do the same thing in Photoshop.

Layers are kind of like setting sheets of tracing paper on top of each other. You can see down through them but change each individual sheet without effecting the layer below. Re order the layers to achived different effects. Group layers so they only effect the layer below, etc. In Zumo's screen snap, you can see he has a layer for the body. If he wants, he can add layers on top of that changing the color, lower the body, etc. If he doesn't like it, it is a simple change. Also, with layers, you can have the layers effect each other in different ways. Put a colr layer over the top of anther layer and change the layer setting to "color burn" and see how it effects it (the drop down menu at the top of the layers pallet that is default to "normal".) Once you get more advanced, you can try using layer mask, adjustment layers, grouping layers and layer sets. Like Zumo said, there are lots of different ways to achieve the same desired effect.

how do you get rid of the the background in the window areas and make it match the new background. I always try but it never works and looks like crap so I scrap the picture.

bouncytruck
04-22-2004, 08:18 PM
You need to fake the windows. Delete (or use a layer mask) in the window areas. This will allow the background (on a layer below) to show through the window areas. You can then make the windows look like windows by putting a layer just above the background, but below the cab with the windows knocked out, and add some color (blue, black, white) depending on the scene the truck is in. Maybe even add some highlights to make it look like glass and set the opacity of that layer so the background shows through.

ok, how do you get the color changed, and keep the correct shading, and lighting effects. everytime i change the color i get a flat color, no shadows.

MMGOODIE
07-16-2004, 10:08 AM
once you have colored the new layer you need to change it from normal to color. It won't be the color you want it to be yet so you will have to duplicate the new layer and then make that new layer multiply then change the opacity count. Then you may even need to do another layer. Some of the rigs I have been playing with I have had 3 or 4 layers just to get the correct coloring. then comes the dodge tool:D. I just started playing with layers so this is just beginner to beginner help...I hope:D

There are a few techniques to getting the Marquee (SP?) tool to work with you. A lot of this depends on the image you are using. If there is a great deal of contrast in the image you can use the magnetic Marquee tool and that will help you get very close to the lines of the object you are trying to select. From there it is a matter of using the SHIFT key to add to the area selected and the OPTION key to select areas to remove from the selection.( those keys are for all of our PC users, if you use a MAC like myself the keys are SHIFT and APPLE I think, I am on the work PC right now)

hold down on the lasso icon until a side menu pops out and then select the similar icon. (this is noted because of the little arrow in the bottom right corner of the icon, so it can be done with all of the ones similar)

Can one of you vetran photochoppers possibly do a tutorial on choppin' roofs. I can change colors, lower, add wheels and rims but can't figure out how to chop tops

Steve

Ogier
03-23-2005, 11:36 AM
I do it one of two ways.

1) select the roof and windows with the selection tool and they use the:
Edit -> Transform -> Scale and the Edit -> Transform -> Skew
functions to do it.

2) Lots of sectioning and layers much like someone would do it in a body shop.

It depends on what is in the background. If I am doing a custom background, I use method 1. If I am using the existing background, I use method 2. But not always.
