I use paint shop pro - it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that photshop has, just most of them - :)

I use Paint Shop Pro as well with the web pages and it seems to do a fare job. I can order it for less that a hundred.

If you don't need all the features in Photoshop, there are several much more affordable options. Adobe makes a "Light" version of photoshop and I think it is around $200. I'm on a mac so I have no idea what is included in Paintshop Pro, but if you can do all the coloring, chopping, etc needed to make a photo look cool, that is a much more reasonable deal.

By the way, Photoshop used to be $699!

some printers and scanners offer a deal when you purchase them that includes a lighter version of photoshop. this is how i obtained my version of photoshop. i bought a scanner, and it included photoshop limited edition 5.0.

if purchasing new photoshop software is still out of your price range, you might also look into purchasing an older version of it from someone who has upgraded. i am not sure how the laws work in this area, but i *think* this is okay. as long as you both arent using it on different computers at the same time, i *think* this is legal.

like i said, i have edition 5.0, and photoshop is currently been upgraded to edition 7.0. however, there are only a few little changes here and there, and the older version works great for me!

good luck!

I don't think it is legal to purchase someone's older version when they have upgraded. They upgrade is usually tied into the serial # of the older version.

oh thats a good point! if the user who has upgraded did not purchase a full version of the new product (off the shelf), but instead only paid a partial amount to receive an upgrade, then it wouldnt be legal to purchase his old copy. this is because the upgrade price is dependent on the user still owning the older version of the software. (which means he cannot sell it). wow - i knew that.

but if the user purchased a complete new version, or even purchased a different software, and was not using the older version of the software for *any* purpose, could he still sell it to another user? i'm curious.

thanks!

I believe you are correct on that. I think you can sell the whole copy of the software as long as the serial # goes with it. The seller would then no long be legally able to use that license of software. I think I'd be leary of buying used software though. Most likely, the previous owner would have registered it when they bought it. If you are both caught with the same serial # (highly unlikely as a home user), the PO would have more of a legal case of ownership.

oh - thats a good point --- what if the PO kept the serial number? thats not right. man - this world is full of shady people these days, eh? ok - well, sounds like the used software idea is probably not too feasible. but maybe you can still try the bundled software.

good luck!
