View Full Version : Replaced my heater core! Lots of fun! Pictures!!! ;)
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:40 PM Hi all! Replaced my heater core this weekend, and I made sure to take lots of pics. Thought I'd post them. Enjoy!
;) jewels.
marked the hood with chalk, so we could remove it....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:41 PM and the other side....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:42 PM got my hood off...
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:43 PM another shot...
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:43 PM look! no hood! ;) sure looks different!
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:44 PM here is where it was busted.... (i sat on it at the ohio meet (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=63180)!)...
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:45 PM and we had to bypass the core until i fixed it...
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:46 PM now i'm droppin the fender...
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:47 PM cool t-shirt, eh?
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:48 PM that nut underneath the inner fender is a b*$#! to get to! even after i dropped the fender a bit....
COBALT 09-22-2003, 06:48 PM You know there is a way to remove that heater box without removing the hood, but it's a HUGE pain in the butt, and you don't want to do it if you've installed new weatherstripping you don't want ripped up. You end up taking the hood off anyway (or what I did which was just undo that end, and support it with a block of wood while I slip the box in/out).
Looks like you had fun.
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:49 PM no housing on the firewall!
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:49 PM the housing on the floor....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:50 PM the busted core....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:51 PM see the crack at the base of the post?
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:51 PM another view....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:52 PM the new core! wohooo!!!
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:53 PM putin those brackets back on....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:53 PM bolting the core back in the housing....
COBALT 09-22-2003, 06:54 PM Lemme guess. You had a nauseating sweet smell in the cab combined with windows that wouldn't defog??? LOL That was my symptoms last Christmas when I finally got my truck on the road. Spent 4 months rebuilding the front/rear suspension only to have the heater core go out while going to the alignment shop. Talk about adding insult to injury!
Nice work.
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:54 PM and that stupid little wire between the housing and the firewall gave me a lot of crap --- it kept wanting to turn sideways and not go back on that post!!! argh!!!!
LonghornJeff 09-22-2003, 06:55 PM Looks like a good time! nice shirt too!:burnout:
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:55 PM now i'm bolting back on the inner fender (always take body panels slowly - one thread at a time for each bolt ;) )
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:56 PM and now i'm talking with a fellow board member on the phone.... guess who?
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:56 PM here she is - all bolted back together....
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:57 PM new heater hoses....
Randy70C-10 09-22-2003, 06:57 PM Looks like you didn't leave out any pics. :D lol
jewels. 09-22-2003, 06:58 PM and the upper radiator hose was even replaced too! ;)
thats all!
ciao! jewels!
p.s. it was a blast! ;)
COBALT 09-22-2003, 07:01 PM 2bbl Rochester 2gv right?
Those carburetors are fun to rebuild, but nothing compared to 4bbl secondaries. Thought about converting?

pissonNOS 09-22-2003, 07:03 PM i dint hae to remove anyof that when i did my heater core are canadian trucks different?
COBALT 09-22-2003, 07:06 PM Well like I said you can get the heater box in/out without removing the hood, but it's a serious pain.
Also, if you're ok leaving out a couple of nuts you can skip removing the fender. The way she did it is the right way though.

well, if you are lucky, that bolt on the lower corner of the housing (between the inner fender and the firewall) is not there --- and if that is the case, then you dont have to drop the inner fender... it might have been removed by a previous owner or even left out by the factory... but if it wasnt there, you were lucky!
the only reason i removed the hood was for convenience --- its easy to remove and replace.
and the only reason i dropped the inner fender was to get at one single housing bolt way down in there... even my little female hands couldnt get on that bolt without dropping the fender....
i hope i answered your question!
;) jewels.
racedvl 09-22-2003, 07:07 PM Hey!!! I have the same shirt! Looks like you had fun.
67Fleetsidedream 09-22-2003, 07:16 PM Question: What are you going to use to seal the hoses to the box?

you dont need to really seal them --- just use standard hose clamps....

no problem roger! let me know if you need any help or advice when you come down too it! i'll be glad to help!
oh - BTW, the new hoses and heater core only cost about $40 for all of it! cheap!
;) jewels.
Spanky_Pete 09-22-2003, 08:01 PM We just did my Dad's 71 two weeks ago. Didn't touch the hood, just dropped out the inner fender. The whole box was out in less than ten minutes.
Of course, then we found out the new heater core was too big. :D
GMCjunkie 09-22-2003, 08:09 PM I changed out the core in the burb about 2 years ago, didnt remove the hood or fender, the "little bolt" on the bottom was there when I took it off, .... aint there now..... :D
67Fleetsidedream 09-22-2003, 08:13 PM Why didn't you go ahead and replace the foam gaskets while you had it off? Just wondering...... I did mine about a year ago, I have to say that a A/C truck is a tad bit more difficult and time consuming. I replaced all the foam gaskets while I had mine apart. The only problem that I had was with the metal plate that is riveted to the fiberglass was rusted away around where the blower motor screws to the box. I tried to repair it with fiberglass.... It leaks today.
lukecp 09-22-2003, 08:16 PM When i did mine, i had to yank the hood to put in a new blower motor w/o removing the heater box.
When i later did the heater core, i didnt have to remove the hood to get to the box, but i did have to drop the inner fender a little bit.....

to be honest, i'm not that picky about the efficiency of the heater.... perhaps i could have, but i generally dont drive my truck in the cold winter months, so it didnt much matter to me..... and since i dont have A/C, i really dont mind if the cabin is that sealed... what i was after was just to try and fix the problem myself... i suppose i could have ordered the gasket for the housing, but i didnt know about it... and i was tryin to do it cheap too... it worked...
i cant even begin to imagine what A/C would have been like.... for me, the process was very easy... much easier than i thought it would be... lots of fun too... i took my time, and enjoyed the whole process...

1968GMC 09-22-2003, 09:02 PM jewels, I think you are a cool chick.
Can you tell me the part number and brand name of the heater core please?
My napa store tells me they cant get one. Not that I need a heater in Arizona,
gr8scott51 09-22-2003, 09:23 PM I did the same thing just the weekend before last. Glad to see you took the time to do it the correct way (per the repair manual). The previous owner of my truck took some short cuts, so while I had it apart I repaired the damage to heater box and replaced the seals. I got my heater core from WES, it was the correct size - only $30.00. I also cleaned about 30 years of dirt out of the box LOL. It now has all the correct bits and pieces, works great and is sealed tight. I hope the next owner appreciates it.
you go girl - scott
COBALT 09-22-2003, 09:27 PM The non-ac heater cores are a dime a dozen. I usually get mine from NAPA.
You can get a pretty good weather stripping kit that will seal up the heater box from LMC for not too much money. I was impressed with it.
Nelson 09-22-2003, 09:44 PM Good job Jewels! I like the shirt and the new black hoses!

Longhorn Man 09-22-2003, 10:59 PM Hmmmm, who could you have been talking to on the phone?
I got my heater core from the dreaded Auto Zone a couple years ago. It isn't 100% correct, but when it comes to my GMC, good enough is too good for her. ;)
Since I do drive mine in the cold, I did seal mine up a bit. Since money is always an issue in my house, I used some black RTV as a gasket...I think I used a tube of The Right Stuff on it, but it may have been dime store crap though. I just squeezed it on where the seal would have been and bolted it on. I then squirted some around the gap whwere the heater core 'pipes' stick out through the box. There was a measurable increase in the temp. Not that I measured it or anything. (How anal do you think i am?)
Imagine going through all the steps that Jewels went through, only to discover that the Dope Smoking Old Man didn't install that b!tch bolt. Yeah...I was peeved.
So Jewels, did the hood get lined up pretty good? You didn't chip the paint installing it back on did you?

i'm so sorry you went thru all that - only to find no bolt there! that inner fender was a fisty thing to put back on... as are all body parts....
yes - the hood lined up perfectly --- right with the chalk marks (except, i washed part of the chalk off when i was cleanin (on accident)) - but it lined up really nice --- i had help line-ing it up, though. no chips... i was a little paranoid about removin that hood, as it might get chipped, but no such thing happened! whew!

73stepside 09-23-2003, 01:33 AM the a/c trucks are alittle different but the same principle holds
bowtie 09-23-2003, 02:29 AM hey Jewels, good job on changing up the heater core. Is that a Canadian flag I see hanging in your garage?

oh - and longhornjeff, if you look at some of the previous posts, i think andy and i hinted an awful lot about who was on the phone with me! ;)
;) jewels.
Hooter 09-24-2003, 01:13 PM well now you know that the heaterbox isn't a seat, changing a heater has never been a fun thing to do. Hey at least the heater fan is accessable. On my Monte I have to take the fender off to get at the bloody thing, I find that fans that have come out of A/C GM's blow more aire then regular fans, just a tip.
Lobo'74 09-26-2003, 09:26 PM Well done! And great pix too. OK, where can we get t shirts like that?
dinnut 09-26-2003, 10:13 PM i think longhorn man and jewels are in love!
nice wheels on an awesome truck jewels.
Longhorn Man 09-26-2003, 11:25 PM HEY, love is a 4 letter word. We can't be poluting our bord with that kind of trash talk.
Actually, I thought I dialed a 1-900 number, and I got her. :O
Naa, she just knows that on just about every job on these trucks I have a tidbit of advice and tricks that i like to do, and she knows that most of them make the job easdier or the truck work better. Plus she was asking about the seat flipping forward.
JoetheMobster 09-27-2003, 11:36 AM Hey, since we're on heaters/heater cores, have any of you had to replace the hoses under the dash that supply the warm air into the vehicle? Kind of like the dryer hoses that you'd find in the laundry room but smaller. Mine were ancient, and when I was rootin around in there, I acidentally jabbed a few holes through the passenger side hose, connecting to the vent on the dash.
What can I use for a replacement?
Blue4x4 09-27-2003, 11:51 AM Looks good. How long did it take you?
greasemonkey 09-27-2003, 12:08 PM Joe; I think you mean the defroster hoses? You can buy them through Chevy Duty, GMC Pauls, or other vendors, but I just went to NAPA and bought a couple feet of I think 2 1/2" defroster hose. I didn't have to use clamps or anything, they are real snug. Not to be a smarta$$ or anything, but I don't know if there are NAPAs in Canada, but any other parts store should have them.

hmmm - thats a tough one, cause i worked on it gradually all afternoon....
but...
20 mins - remove hood
30-40 mins - drop inner fender
20 mins - remove heater box
10 mins - replace core
20 mins - replace heater box
1 hour? - replace inner fender (argh!!!)
5 mins - replace hoses
15 mins - replace/realign hood
so maybe three hours of work? but those are pretty realistic OVER estimates of time -- i like to hang out, take my time, be thourough, etc. i'm sure you could EASILY do it faster. i do it like a woman --- check twice, and then check again three more times! ;)
good luck!
;) jewels.

hehe, thanks man! The last thing I should have typed before posting was "for lack of a better word". Defroster hoses is EXACTLY what I was looking for, word, and parts - LMAO!
Yeah, we have NAPA parts stores crawling all over the place - I will definetly check them out.
thanks again man!
73stepside 09-27-2003, 09:41 PM if you get the original type defroster hose then be prepared for them to fit very very snug. the plastic hose goes on easier. those hoses are a pain to run sometimes. mine were a pain but i have a/c too so that factors into the equation
