View Full Version : paint brands
cali_surfer 11-12-2003, 05:23 PM I'm considering repainting my truck over the Christmas holiday. It's been painted now for about two years, but like any paintjob, the only way they go is down hill. I have a couple scratches and minor dings that bug me everytime I look at it. I considered just fixing those things, but the thought of a complete color change is more appealing everytime I think about it. Maybe I'm dumb since it will cover up my sweet flame job, but I'm just kicking around the idea rightnow. On to my question, all I've sprayed is Dupont basecoat and clear. I've heard of guys using Nason and Omni and getting good results. I wanted to get some real world feedback on people who have used either of those. Dupont and PPG are the two suppliers in my area for autobody supplies, so getting a hold of Nason or Omni isn't a problem. I've heard that Omni basecoat covers horribly. I know you get what you pay for, and both Nason and Omni are considerably cheaper than their name brand big brothers, but since my truck has taken the place of my daily driver that really isn't an issue. Any input?
boilrman 11-12-2003, 09:49 PM true that you get what you pay for. I am in school right now for Autobody repair and the guy helping me bought all Nason products for his car. The only real problem we saw was that the primer was hard to sand smooth. We instead went to P50(grey Primer), I believe it is Sherwin Williams. This sands out very well. Other than that we didnt have any problems spraying the Nason. ? is How long will the paint job hold up.
Nason is perfetly fine for totally repainting a vehicle, but when doing small repairs that depend on perfectly matching color th higher price paint is better. i've used nason on plenty of doors and fenders though and always had a pefect match. i think the covering issue depends on the primer. anyway, your question, yeah, i would definately use Nason for repainting your whole truck. i've never used PPG because i get good price on Dupont from paint store

sevt_chevelle 11-15-2003, 09:08 PM Cali, from having used both Omni and Nason my choice would be nason. I really do believe its a better product then Omni and I prefer PPG products!
Omni base covers like crap, its so transulent, even if you use a similar colored primer it still takes MORE base then needed. If Omni base takes 8-9 coats to cover were a good base in PPG will cover in 3 coats wheres the savings? The clear in Omni is ok but tends to yellow over time, seen it happen in a few months.
Nason covers great, coverage in around 3 coats. The clear is good make sure you get the slower drying clear as the faster drying clear does tend to dull out. I dont have any numbers as its been a few years since I sprayed Nason last, but it is good stuff much better then that crap from PPG
cali_surfer 11-16-2003, 02:22 PM Thanks, that was exactly the information I was looking for. Made my mind up now.
what #'s do you need for nason? i have some of the slow and fast clear in my shop. let me know if you need me to check anything
cali_surfer 11-18-2003, 11:53 AM seanh71, what products are you using? I'm looking for a recommendation on base and clear. For the base I want something that covers good. For the clear I want an overall clear, not a spot clear, good gloss and holdout, and something I can get a medium temp. reducer/activator for. I know Nason has several different base/clears, so it would be great if you could give me your experiences so I can learn from what you've tried.
Cali-surfer, I read your previous posts and was wondering if you dealer carries Transtar technologies clearcoats?..they are a very good clear that has an outstanding gloss, and good wear, also cheap compared to comparable brands. Just a thought.

cali_surfer 11-18-2003, 12:52 PM I've heard the name before but the two dealers back home looked at me funny when I asked about it way back when I first painted my truck..... so they've never heard of it. What's the going price of a sprayable gallon of Transtar? I'm just trying to see if it would be worth my while to find a local supplier. Thanx rigo
i think the gallon is 65.00 the hardener is $25-30 and reducer is about $15 a gallon.......if you read the side of the transtar can, it recommends only being reduced by 10%...hope this helps some

70c10 11-18-2003, 01:35 PM I used Transtar on my last truck and was told by the saleswoman NOT to thin it. BIG mistake. My buddy who painted it wanted to stop and thin it but I told him to keep going. The truck was Black and had to be wetsanded and buffed a couple times to remove the orange peel but it turned out great. Transtar was alot cheaper than the Dupont Chroma clear I bought for the previous paint job. I must say though, the Dupont system was awesome even though it was a little pricey.
lost wages 11-19-2003, 03:15 AM my painter is using all sikkens on my truck, any thoughts on this brand, he says its good stuff, ive used omni on things like my frame and the spray well but do take more coats.
