My tailgate wouldn't open with the handle so I took it apart and only problem I could see was a plastic clip had busted. Of course they don't sell the clip so got a new handle to the tune of about 70 bucks. Put it together and it would not release the tailgate. I took the latches apart and tried to adjust the system but just can't figure it out. The trim behind the handle busted too but with it out I can reach my fingers in there and pull the rods to open the gate that way. What am I missing here?? i have the same problem with my 93
(in fact every used truck of these years i looked at had this problem)
i have to do the same thing, lift the little cover behind the latch and squeeze my fingers in there to pull that rod

i have not taken mine apart to fix but i did notice that the little peg/latch on the passenger side of the tailgate does not pull in as far as the drivers side and this is what is keeping it from opening maybe if you could adjust that rod (bend it a smidge??)
i would think that would do the trick

Thanks Bigblue,
I coulda swore it was 70ish bucks but just called the local dealer and it's 32 for the handle and 10 for the plastic cover. He talked to service and they're quite sure there are no adjustments and claim a new handle should fix it as 'they wear out'. It's been awhile but know I wasn't happy with the quality/design of the handle and the new one did not fix it. I think you are right, I will have to spring for another handle and try bend that rod some to get the latch to work. The problem with the handle is that it's scissor action is just not quite long enuff even when new. When I get around to it will let you know how it goes.
