Does anyone know what purpose is served by the off-set washers used with the carriage bolts that attach a wood bed to the Frame on a pickup box?
The previous owner replaced the wood in the bed of my Apache and just used regular carriage bolts with washers, I'm putting in a new wood bed and ordered a stainless bedbolt kit and it's advertised as having the correct off-set washers, so I'll wait until I get one to use as a pattern to countersink for the washers, but I'm just curious why they're off-set.

The offset square hole keeps the carriage bolt from turning while tightening the nut.

I always thought they were offset to allow better alignment with the supports on the frame.

Now that I think about it this makes perfect sense!
