I can't seem to find the diagram I am looking for for the Headlight relay conversion. I am installing the H-4 conversion from Rick's (great product) and need to know exactly how many and which relays to use. I have a couple of relays that are 4 prong, do I need 2 for each ligh (hi/low)?? Or do I need to get the 5 prong with the 87a terminal and run the 87 terminal to one light and the 87a terminal to the other light and use a 2nd relay for highs? Thanks in advance for the info. I will be posting picks of the original lights and new lights installed with and without relays.
Also, does anyone know which relay to use so the interior dome light will fade out slowly (like newer vehicles) when the door is closed? Thanks in advance!

Thanks,
Shawn

You need to use SPST relays either 4 or 5 terminal, 5 terminal just has two 87 terminals. The 87A terminal is on the SPDT relay. Use one relay for low beam one relay for high beam both lights to same relay. Go to this link and click on "Click here to view catalog page"for a terminal diagram.

Thaks guys, that's what I'm looking for. Neonlarry, did you ever figure out the dome light dimmer relay??
Thanks again.

No, I haven't figured out the dome light. Give me a couple of year, make and model with them and I'll see what I can find out . I'd like something like that also to go along with the wiper delay switch I'm putting in.

Thanks for all of the posts!
crazy4chevs, that schematic is definately the easiest to read, but all the other sights are great too.

Neonlarry,
I know my wifes 2003 Audi A4 Quatro has the fading dome light, but I don't know what other vehicles do. I imagine the higher end cars, but there are probably some less expensive cars that have them too. Anyone else know which vehicles have the dimming dome light?

I can build the circuitry for a fading dome light if enough people were interested for me to make some money off of it. Its not that hard to do, I can also do a fade-in-fade-out cycle using only a few parts from radioshack on a PCB.

Here is a link (http://www.electronic-circuits-diagrams.com/carsimages/carsckt3.shtml) to a circuit diagram.
Most all the parts should be available at radio shack.

We rented an '03 Dodge Intrepid that had the fading dome light. I found it a bit annoying myself, though. :p

just to throw in another car that has the fading dome light. Our 2003 Grand Prix has that.

My '04 Explorer does the fading dome light too.

I built a fading dome light for my truck a number of years ago. It wasn't all that difficult.

I need to know what relays to use for the headlights and the best place to get them.

I finally got around to doing the headlight conversion on my truck today. I live in a big city with lots of street lights so it's kinda hard to tell the difference but I think there's a little more light now. I haven't had a chance to flip on the high beams and I'm curious how they will look now. Btw, if it's still not enough light after I readjust my lights, I've got a box with the H-4 style lamps with 85/100 watt beams!

I wanted to do this on my practice vehicle (my truck) before I do this to my Camaro. Not too difficult, just took about 1/2 a day and some connectors to make everything look stock.

I got a dome light fader from Web Electric.

http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm

It works great. Model DLD-1 Dome Light Dimmer Module. I installed it next to the fuse box and hooked into the dome light wiring right there. I also installed two under dash lights to light the footwells and hooked them in. Lights fade out in twenty seconds when the door is closed but go out instantly when the key is turned or the truck is running. I didn't have doorswitches so I installed them in the rubber bumper holes at the top of the doors... much easier to wire and no drilling.. Drilled out the bumper and it fit over the switch too.

:hmm: i wonder if a person could go to the junk yard and get a dimmer like that out of a newer car/truck and make one of those work in our trucks ?

Can the headlight relays be found in the junk yard? And are the numbers 85, 86, 87, 30 found on the relays like in the drawing by crazy4chevs? Thanks.

I got mine from Radio Shack. The numbers are listed on the bottom of the relay and on the back of the package.

another timed dimmer fades is on my econobox, ford focus... I know, i know, but the focus was a ford Europe product... much better engineered... it was better than a cavalier and not a asian thingamajib...

Besides there should be plenty of these things in the junkyards... hold no value and crush like a wheaties can...

For those that have used the Radio Shack style relay, did you mount the relay to the radiator support with a self tapping screw and then use crip on wire connectors to attach to the relay? Anybody have any ideas to make this neater?

Go to the junk yard, look on the drivers side firewall on a square body fuel injected S-10. Grab the two relays, and cut the harness a good 6 or 8 inches down. Now the splices you'll make will be hidden and protected in the harness, and the connector will be water tight.

Dome lights? What's that? If you can't find it in the dark, you don't need it.

If you have a GMC where we have 2 of each head light where Chevy has 1 of each head light, do we need 4 of these relays? Or is it not possible with GMC's?

Blue68

Tanker,
The concept is the same. One relay for low beams, one for the high beams. Only your wiring will be slightly different....I'm guessing not knowing the wiring diagram.

I have a diagram for GMC's, but I cant figure out how to post it, b/c its MS Visio.
