Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks. I started to install them, noted that they were indeed a pain to install but also that I didn't really like the look of them sticking through the firewall, and then went the SS route.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Took the weekend off from the '65 to build shelves and organize the back room of the shop, which included boxing and labeling a bunch of the parts for the truck. No more hunting the shop for random truck parts.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Deleted the antenna hole today. I'm not 100% positive where the antenna will end up yet, but it won't be here.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220760.jpg But in bigger news: we picked up a donor this morning. It's a '02 2WD Suburban 1500 with the 5.3L/4L60E combo. It's a boat, but it runs well. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220791.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220741.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Nice donor!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Yeah, I think it'll do for now.
Stripped and body-worked the outer cowl panels today. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220801.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Dad stripped the cowl during the week, and we got those pieces into primer today.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
We tore down a later-model (late-70's - mid-80's) GM truck 12-bolt today to rob the backing plates off of it. The plan is to narrow the original '65 12-bolt to achieve the deep-dished wide rear wheel look we're after. While doing so, we'll incorporate Ford-style housing ends to eliminate the C-clips, and we'll switch the stock 11" x 2-1/2" drums over to the later GM truck 11-5/32" x 2-3/4" drums for a decent increase in brake shoe surface area.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220848.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
EDIT: The stock drums are 11" x 2", not 2-1/2".

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Took the '65 out for a spin today, literally. :) We turned it around and backed it into the shop, as the rear axle will be coming back out shortly.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
And then the packages arrived...mamacita! :D
15x12" Cragar S/S's, Moser housing ends and retainers, and a set of fixture bushings for lining everything up when we cut down the axle housing. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220898.jpg |

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
great build and documentation.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks!
Pulled the rear axle this morning and drained it, then shot the first coat of satin black on the cowl pieces. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1220936.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Day 195: The rear axle housing is ready to be degreased and blasted, and the cowl pieces received the final coat of satin black.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Spent the morning cleaning and priming the wiper transmission and the rain baffle for the heater inlet, then we took the rear axle over to the quarter car wash for a quick degreasing. Hoping to get it blasted and primed this week.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Dad had the axle and backing plates blasted today. I swung by after work and shot some primer to keep the rust monster away.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Installed the dome light, glovebox latch, wiper motor, wiper transmission, cowl pieces, emblems, etc. today. The outer cowl panels will come back off in order to install the front fenders later, so they're just stuck on there finger-tight for now.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Dad finished up the passenger side door and installed the door panel this morning, while I spent the day methodically welding the axle tubes to the housing.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Day 200! AKA axle choppin' day. :) Dad began machining the wood for the bed floor while I took 7" out of the original 12-bolt (3-1/2" off each side) and installed a pair of Moser 7950 housing ends. These ends retain the stock brake mounting pattern while converting to the big Ford 3.15" axle bearings and retainer plates, thereby eliminating the need for C-clips.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230113.jpg Measure fifty-eight times...cut once. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230100.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Welded up the ends today, cleaned the housing, then set it back on the trailing arms. Dad finished the machine work on the bed floor boards.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230124.jpg The housing is now 50" end to end. It was 57" originally; already 1-1/2" narrower than the later truck 12-bolts. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230150.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Spent the morning laying out the e-brake cable routing, removing the factory bumpstop brackets, and beginning the task of filling out the order form for axle shafts.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Looking great... :metal:
Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!! |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Merry Christmas to you!
Took a couple days off to celebrate Christmas with the family, but we got back to it today. The trailing arms each received a little tapped pad to secure the e-brake cables, and we've gathered together a few parts for paint. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230205.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Long day at the shop today. Prepped and primed the trailing arms, rear coils, U-bolts, spring retainers, axle housing, backing plates, shock mounts, and steering wheel. Items in white will end up in silver hammertone. Items in red oxide will end up in gloss black.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230211.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Shot the first coat of black this morning. Also brushed the holes in the trailing arms to ensure complete coverage.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230233.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Shot the second coat of black, then relocated the small parts and tented the axle to protect it before shooting two coats of silver. I'll probably take tomorrow off to let the paint cure a bit before reassembly.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230295.jpg We also took a look at a 6.0L that had been in a vehicle fire. Unfortunately, it had cooked to the point that the valvecovers melted...way too baked to take a gamble on. We're keeping our eyes out for a cheap, rebuildable 6.0L longblock. |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Stuck the stock 3.73 open diff back into the housing for now, then attached the trailing arms, springs, and axle housing to the frame today. Also ordered up a custom set of axles from Moser, a ARP main cap stud kit, and a Ultimate cover from LPW.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230322.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
looking good!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Trailing arms look great...:metal:
Happy hunting for the 6.0...:uhmk: |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks guys! Installed the panhard bar, wheel cylinders, lower shock mounts, and e-brake cables (they're not clipped into the backing plates yet) today, then began looking at the bed floor crossmembers.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230341.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Installed the other steering wheel today, worked on the bed floor cross-members, installed all the goodies into the rear axle, and stuck the rear "tires" on it.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230394.jpg In summary, the '65 GM Truck 12-bolt rear axle has received: Tubes welded to center housing Moser 7950 housing ends to accept the "big Ford" style bearings/retainers (eliminating C-clips) Narrowed the housing by 7" total (3-1/2" per side) Custom-order Moser 30-spline alloy street/strip axles 1/2-20 x 3" screw-in studs on a 5 on 5" bolt pattern "Big Ford" tapered wheel bearings Larger "JB5" style drum brakes LPW Ultimate Cover ARP main cap studs Stock 3.73 open diff...until the final rear tire diameter is determined. The rear "tires" will help us decide on a final tire size. Dad even went as far as making them hubcentric. :) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230406.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230412.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Now that the rear axle is done, it's time for the bed! We decided to set the bed in place to determine tire clearance before the metalwork commences. I brought the bed in through the side door while Dad guided me along. Good thing the shop has high ceilings.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1070992.jpg It might look a little goofy at the moment, but the bed is sitting about 1/2" rearward and the suspension will compress a couple inches once the bed floor, tailgate, fuel tank, etc. are installed. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230465.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230486.jpg Drop it a bit and stretch the wheelwells forward a couple inches and it'll look pretty good. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230537.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I ended up finding some long bed w/wheel well arch an cut them down since the long bed arch is 3" longer! I haven't got it done yet but I will as a winter project, I also got 15x12 rims but I got the rally rims an 15x7 up front! when I tubbed the bed I used 67-72 tubs and widened them 4.75", the tubs are 16" wide not including 1-2" or so when bolted to the bed side! the tubs pretty most go straight up from the frame! what was the back spacing on those rims??
progress is looking good, keep it up |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Yep, the longbed guys have quite a bit more room. I think stretching the front of the wells forward 2" will do the trick here. The Cragars have 4-1/2" of backspace. Thanks!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Blew the bed apart today and started investigating exactly what we have to work with here. It looks like we'll be combining two driver bed sides to make one good one, but we may end up needing a patch panel or two for the passenger side.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230565.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Letting the sparks fly. :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230571.jpg We were getting the panel all fit up, and I was just about to start tacking it in, when Dad asked if I wanted to quit for now and come back to it next weekend after he picks up a tank of gas for the welder. Uh, heck yeah! I've done enough FCAW on thin sheetmetal on this project. I'm totally ready to take the "easy way out" and start doing MIG. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230574.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Reworked the bed crossmembers today to fit the board layout that we're going with (all boards the same width, board in the center rather than a trim strip, and hidden bed mounting bolts), then started mocking them up on the truck.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230578.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Today's picture might not be too exciting, but we accomplished quite a bit. All of the bed floor supports have the mounting bolts and pads welded in place and are in primer now. We also welded up a tank mounting bracket and installed it to the welding cart for the C25 tank.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230594.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Keep Rockin' :metal:
Diggin' the progress! …and those wood wheels are sweet!!!:mm: |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Switched the welder over to 0.025" solid core and C25 this morning, then began welding the drivers bedside back together. Holy cow! Welding with smaller wire and sheilding gas is a walk in the park.
The front of the wheel opening is 2" further forward than stock to both center the wheel in the opening and better accommodate the large diameter tire. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230603.jpg We shot all of the bed floor crossrails with satin black, and Dad started sanding down the floor boards. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...h_P1230619.jpg |
