It hooks under the edge of the arm and then you just work the arm up and it pops off. Should be able to find one at napa or similar.

In my previous post (find the double burger) I mentioned removing the roll pin on top for the 4 speed shifter...DON’T DO IT!!!...

Here’s the right way...
1. I had to use a little lubricant to get the top to depress down against spring pressure...you may not have to. Note the opening where shifter goes in, is positioned straight ahead.
2. Get over the top of the silver ring and press down hard!
3. When you get it pressed down, turn an 1/8th turn counter-clockwise. See red arrow. Again, normally the opening you see is positioned straight ahead.
4. Remove shifter
5. Plug up the hole on top the trans to keep debris from getting in.

Bottom half is ready, I think...speedo cable, u bolts, trans mount bolts, motor mount bolts. Hopefully, tomorrow afternoon allows me to yank it out.

That was a workout...thanks to my son and my brother, I was able to get the 292 and the trans out as one unit. Doing this while keeping the riveted transmission crossmember in was accomplished by disconnecting the rag joint, unbolting the front cab mounts, and simultaneously jacking up the front of the cab just a few inches. (I had enough slack in the brake lines) After that, it was just a wrestling match the rest of the way. I’ll clean up the tools tomorrow...but for now, I’m calling it a night.

Thanks regarding the shop. Living in Northern Minnesota (and I do not hunt) I have to have somewhere to go and work, especially in the winter.

I siphoned the brake reservoir in preparation to disconnect the brake lines. I didn’t want brake fluid all over the place.

Some scraping, some grinding, and liberally spraying brake cleaner to clean and dry the metal, I sprayed my favorite rubberized sealer on the frame...now I am pumped up...after the frame dries, I think I’ll clean up the firewall.

I do have some ideas on where I want to take this truck regarding looks, etc...but I have to remind myself about the initial goal of “keeping it in a functional mode”, and not tear this down so far that it’s not useable for long periods of time... Stay tuned

Maybe a minor detail, but I’m documenting the original scribed numbers from the assembly line.

Using aluminum foil again, I prepped the firewall for paint. Prior, I used a wire brush on a drill to scuff up the paint. I used rubberized sealer below the cab seam and used black hammered paint for the rest. I find that this hammered finish covers a multitude of blemishes and is a great finish when you’re going to change colors later on. I’ll use this on the inner fenders and fender wells.

My son came into the garage last night and cleaned up the trans and transfer case. After masking today, he sprayed multiple thin coats of Chevy Orange. I like it!

I like the Hammer finish paint.
I have used it before but not on trucks and cars Looks great.

Thanks...I am now starting to look at removing the E-brake stuff and the leaf shackle mount points.

Looking at your profile, I see you had a 1963 Impala in high school. I bought one as a sophomore and spent the next three summers working on it. My first day on the road with it was October 2, 1984...I was a freshman in college. Here’s a pic of my SS.

I still got it. Bought it when I was 15.
That will be my next (make over) project.
Mine is a 2 door hardtop Impala.

I also like the Orange on the trans and transfer.
What transfer case is that?
