I usually put a small piece of 2x4 in the pad area and turn the air pressure down to about 5psi. When they go flying they usually damage the piston

Ryan that picture is just the base coat I clear coated it Sunday. Hay swamp rat its been a while from your last post. you busy doing other things. I have been working grave yard for the last month so I get up early and work on the truck for couple hours about 3 days a week. I get most truck stuff done on the week ends. 4 Wheel parts called me today and they don't have the spindles and can't get them for about a month. I call my friend Pat to see if he can find a couple by the end of the week. Today I installed the ARP studs in the stearing knuckles and removed the seals and races from the hubs today. Only problem the hubs don't fit in my blasting cabinet. Going to see about getting gravity blasting gun at harbor Freight tomorrow so I don't have to fire up the big blasting pot.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

I ordered the spindles from ORD this afternoon. Should have them by Thursday. I almost forgot I bought a gravity spray gun from Harbor Freight about 2 months ago and used it to spray the D60 this week end and it work good. I don't think I would use it to spray body panels as the spray pattern is a heavy top and bottom. All in all not bad for inexpensive spray gun for spraying parts.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

I used that gun to spray my home theater screen paint and it worked very well. For $15 or so you can't beat the quality, however i'd also be hesitant on spraying panels.

What type of rear spring hangers are you using? Do they drop lower? Is this the reason you don't need the 4" block?

PS your project looks awesome!

I installed an rear shackle flip kit from ORD and it eliminate the 4" block. my rear springs are new stock springs.

Thanks for comment on the axle. My builder Sky is starting to feel his age he is about 80 years old I think he might be retiring at the end of this year it will be the 3rd time he has retired in the last 15 years. I will be lucky if I can do half of what he does if I make to 80.

Hey DW, is SRS in San jose? There is no one in my area that media blasts vehicles or sheet metal for vehicles. Do you mind if I ask the cost to get it done? Your only like an 1 or so away. How is there work?
Thanks
Oh and sorry to hear about the flood issue.

They media blasted my quad cab $4.10.00. they also do power coating and has reasonable prices. The more part you power coat it seams the cheeper it is. they are in Santa Clara off grant street. They only take cash payments and they are about 1 to 2 weeks turn around time.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

I salute you, sir! Restoring trucks like this is not just skill, i think it's a passion and an art. I once had rust issues under my truck and even on my bed, i had to use phosphoric acid solution to get the corrosion and rust out. Took me almost a week (thankfully the weather was dry and i had a spacious shed, i do not have all the time in the world to do it in one day). In any case, my bed held up pretty alright.

Great to see your build coming along. Great job!

I finished prepping all the parts for my Dana 60 front axle today. Had to buy new rotors as they old ones were .0200 under minimum. got new U joints installed in the right and left axle shafts. Now I just have to put it all back together. I finally got my new steering gear from O.R.D. it took about 2 moths. It is set up for hydro assist steering.

swamp rat 04-03-2015 10:58 PM

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

I may be wrong but i thought Hydro assist was the early 67 version of power steering? the setup where there is a hydralic ram affixed to the tie rod.. If thats the case i'm not sure what the benifit would be over a more modern 3.5 to 1 ratio like you can get from readhead steering?

http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/

The axles look sweet, cant wait to see that cab in paint!

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

this is power steering with hydro assist it help with larger tires. I might step up to 38" tires if they fit in the future. for now I will not install the ram or plumbing just keep it blocked off until required.

Some pictures of the Dana 60 going back together. it was a pita putting the high steer parts on was supper tight fit. I hope I don't have to take it apart any time soon. Just have to install the wheel bearing and install the axle in the truck this week end.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

Thanks for complements. I built the stand about a year ago the wheels are to small with both axles on it after I install the D60 I'm going to replace the wheel with 5" one's to make it easier to roll around. I still have the stock D44 and HO72. First C10 the truck your building with your son is looking dam good to
