Thanks, Chris. It's getting there.

Did some patchwork today on the driver's side.

Here's a couple after cutting out some more of the body

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...51515151_n.jpg

And here's a few shots of the patchwork on the driver's side

First set of patch panels: Lower body and cab corner

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...88903517_n.jpg

Second patch panel: The gap between the two cabs, where part of the Suburban back glass was.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...05106332_n.jpg

It's definitely getting there. Slowly, but surely!

Sorry Son, But I am not as good as most of the guys on here when it comes to welding the body panels, I am used to heavy steel not paper thin sheet metal.
I have to give credit to the guys that do body work. Some of the builds on this site display a real talent for welding body panels. This truck has been a learning experience for me as far as body work goes. It is not easy welding panels without distortion when your used to burning in thick welds on heavy steel. Its a new kind of welding for me and I can see why I need a good mig with gas, Its Very easy to mess up a panel with a Mig burning .035 flux core wire. I will have to use my share of filler on this build. We need to start looking for a new Mig welder...

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

I switched to 030 wire and it welds much better without burning through. I still need a good mig with gas... but this will get the job done

Got work started on the passenger side, working on patching that up.

First patch was the window gap. Then started on cutting out the lower body to put in a patch.
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...20295907_n.jpg

Here's the first set of lower body patches
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...51111121_n.jpg

The lower bodyline didn't line up right, so we put in a bodyline patch in place.

Nice shot from the back

Lol, the mega cab piece is a little longer than Dodge's. I think Dodge has 8 inches of cab behind the back doors. We've got exactly 16.

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

I could be wrong on Dodge's mega cab, because I've never gone up to a random Dodge and measured the length behind the back doors LOL, but I think I'm pretty close.

We're going to extend the frame and put a shortbed on it. But we're still a ways from that. Still have to get the cab finished. 'Cause it's not done yet lol.

i want to do the same thing but with my dads 3/4 ton burb but i want to make a regular crewcab with a full size short bed

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

One of the reasons we went 16 inches long on the cab from the pillar to the back of the cab is because of the location of the third set of body mounts. If you cut it off behind the doors you will end up using the rear cab mounts from the doner cab since the third set of mounts will be removed from the burb. We may still add them to our build. We will only need about a 26 inch extention for the short bed to fit.

loudnlifted88 04-03-2012 12:25 PM

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

i was going to get half of a ext cab shortbed frame and weld it to the burb frame and use the ext cab rear cab mounts for the rear cab mounts on the crew cab

TowwDogg 04-03-2012 06:33 PM

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

That will workout nice. we are going to build a second truck when this one is finished and that one will be a complete frame off build with a truck frame and the burb frame.

rocking chevy 04-04-2012 09:22 PM

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

a dodge maga cab has 20 more inches of cab added to it, about 10 in the back of the cab and about 10 in the rear doors.

I'm just meaning in the back space behind the doors itself.

Well, here's a few frame pics for all you truck build junkies. Lol

Started stripping the Burb frame
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...86063286_n.jpg

Cut the frame out from under the '98
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...05240681_n.jpg
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...16390168_n.jpg

Set the '98 frame on top of the Burb frame, and started stripping it.
'98 frame is now just the frame rails

Will you be boxing the frame in? Or welding it in like you'd do if you were converting a long bed to a short bed?

Hi Im Norm, will's (DUB X) dad, We did a Z notch to stretch the frame. Yes the same way it would be done to make a short bed frame from a long bed frame. He will have pics up by friday of that. We still have to replace cross members but we need to decide which tank we are going to use, The Burb or the Truck tank. That will determine which cross members we put back in.

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban

Looks like your project is comeing along nicely! :)

Don't know if it makes a difference to you guys, but, when I got done useing the truck tank for my kidhlr, the gas gauge reads half a tank when it's empty.
also it is kinda nice to have the bed empty and not worry about where to put a spare tire. :)

Sometimes I wish the tank was bigger and I didn't have to stop at the gas station every 200 miles, but at least it doesn't hurt as bad when I do. :) LOL
