I remember my Dad doing that to all his trucks when I was a kid. Don't see that too often anymore.

Does anyone have any pics of a long step with a period correct topper ? I've been trying to find one for my truck but it seems as though there were not alot of them made in the first place and there were even fewer survivors.

What year is that brochure? The part about the self adjusting brakes may explain why I couldn't find the opening for adjusters on my truck :uhmk:

I suppose the grandfather of our "trucks with campers" would be John Steinbecks' Rocinante - his '60 GMC with a special camper he custom ordered. He used the trip and observations fort his books "Travels with Charly" It was the first book I read of his and to this day my favorite.

His truck and camper were restored and put in the museum. If you have not read the book, do so as it is very good.

It's in a 1965 Mechanix magazine. I just took a hub off of a 65 an hour ago and it had self adjusters on the front.

The everything on my 66 is so covered with mud that I thought I just didn't dig thru enough yet, glad I don't have to worry about adjustment. I know I need to get the manual for the beast so I don't have simple questions like this.

I read Travels With Charley years ago on a back packing trip... I don't know if it sparked my wanderlust, or just unleashed it, but I've taken every opportunity to drive all over this country, and I think of Able Baker Charlie Dog every time!
I've often wondered what kind of truck he had... I didn't remember if it was ever mentioned in the book, and I was in college at the time and not into '60-'66 trucks... though I have OFTEN thought a GMC would have been right, or an International Harvester.

I've got a '61 Suburban that I drive everywhere, and have frequently camped out of it for deer hunting and car shows, and again remember Travels when I do it. (The Suburban has been in 20 states in 60,000 miles since I bought it 7 years ago this fall)

Thanks for posting these pics--you made my day!

-Brad

1963 3/4 ton GMC "Custom". The V6's high torque at low rpm would come in handy for hauling this camper.

Need more pics! I'm pretty sure our '66 Custom Camper is going to end up toting a vintage slide-in unit around, so I need to see what's out there. Anybody know of a time-capsule style camper unit just gathering dust in a neighbors garage?
Below I photo-shopped a semi-local CL find onto Big Red just to see what it'd look like. Hmm, ... I need more images.
