Duckduckgo the BOM (bill of materials) for the D44 and you can see the axle part numbers are different between 71 to 72, while 70 to 71 are the same. Sorry I don't have a link for the BOM, but the info is out there.

My K10 has a 70 Blazer D44 front axle, and I hope to convert to disk some day.

Regardless of the thread age, this info is gold. On my 1970, I am just swapping the entire front diff from a 1972 to avoid mismatched parts.

I swapped 72 axle into my 70, The brake lines are a different size and go through the frame in a different location

Hmm, I always was under the impression was 71-87 pickup (81 on Blazer and sub) front half ton D44 diffs pretty much swapped.
I had a 3/4 ton 91 sub I was going to swap the diffs for on my 72 K10, but got lazy.
