Re: Alternator Internal regulator convertion
i am very sorry to bring back this old thread but i am not finding information that i need. since I am going to a much higher output alternator, i wanted to run a new 8ga wire to the battery from the alternator.
i am in the middle of this upgrade right now and need some help. i didnt realize that the wire from the alt to the battery was actually running to a few places. i am not even sure where that junction point is on the drives side. i see that the factory wire that came off the post goes into some sort of junction and then to the firewall, to the external regulator and then to the junction block over at the battery. i have it wired exactly like in post 18 with the jumpers keeping the stock plug in tact. can i leave the factory red wire with ring terminal disconnected from the alternator and run my new one from the alternator to the battery? Or can I leave it and run my 8ga in addition to it? |
Re: Alternator Internal regulator convertion
So I finished hooking it all up exactly as listed above in post 18. It is certainly charging. This thing is putting out way more than 14v. At high idle, it was pegging my meter at 20. At 1000 rpm, it was high 17s. Am I going to fry something or is is to be expected? I got a 94 amp alternator.

Recheck the two wires that are plugged into the alternator. I believe you have them reversed. This is why I don't like that way of wiring the conversion. It's much too easy to mess up. Just remember that the brown wire to the regulator plug goes to the no. 1 terminal on the alternator and the red wire on the alternator goes to the no. 2 plug on the alternator. I need to clarify that you are using a SI alternator or is it a CS alternator? Here's the SI style. Attachment 1610468 Here's the CS style. Attachment 1610470 And here;s the wiring conversion for the CS 144 Attachment 1610469 |
Re: Alternator Internal regulator convertion
Thanks so much VetteVet. I'll likely start a new thread if I need more assistance. I think what you have given me so far is enough to go on. I am using a 12si. Ill take a look tomorrow to be sure I have 1 and 2 hooked up. I also kept the same stock wires at the plug by removing them from the bold plastic plug and putting them into the new style. Anyway, thanks again

Re: Alternator Internal regulator convertion
Hey vettevet. After verifying all wiring is correct problem still persists. I started a new thread with more info.
