Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

OK, engine mount adapters showed up today. FINALLY. I will be taking the day off tomorrow and plan to remove the accessories, paint the block, and transmission, and get it all installed in the chassis. Then I can take some time to paint the accessories and brackets this weekend. Pics tomorrow after some cleaning and painting. Cant wait to see it in the chassis. :metal:

me too buddy!!!

and i cant wait for your test drive video!!:D

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Test drive video? You mean see how long it'll boil the right rear tire video.
I cant wait either. I found out today that Goodmark dropped the ball on my fuel tanks and wont have any until mid to late March after they told me they were in stock. So, now I get to wait for a refund from that so I can order them from RockAuto.com

I wonder if I could just run a inline pump after the switching valve and just re-do my fuel system later? If so, I will just do that for now and spend the cash from the tanks on some headers or something else. Anyone see any issues with running an inline pump after the switching valve???

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

the only downside that ive read is the noise.

i'd just keep on as planned and just use your stock tanks. The only time Bob noticed feul starvation on Fred was at an 1/8th to 1/4 tank. i'm keeping my org. ones for now.(spent a lot of time on them already!) i figure theres 2 so what the heck switch it over at a 1/4.

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Biggest problem with an external pump after the valve is that those pumps are designed to push, not pull. That's a long pull when it's placed after the valve. Do it right the first time. :D

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

I know I know. I figure if I'm going to remove the bed to do the fuel senders and everything else, I'm going to replace tha tanks with the 87 ones. No big deal, I can wait. Truck wont see the road again until spring anyway.

subscribed.... nice progress.

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

My truck was rigged with an external pump. I just have one tank, so no switching valve, but it is really loud. No problem listening to see if the pump is working. Luckily the exhaust drowns it out, though.

Looks like this will be a cool build. Maybe you can sell off some of the factory crate your engine was sent in to offset the cost.

OK, took the day off today to mess with the truck. It's amazing how much work you can get done if you're not at work. I did the mod to the engine mount adapter plate just like Bob did so I can use the stock compressor and brackets. Only difference is instead of welding an extra plate to my engine stand, I just moved the engine stand back on the frame the same amount as I moved the clamshell mount and everything lined right up. If I have any clearance issues later I will deal with that then. Got the engine and trans in and bolted to the engine mounts. Will need to make a custom crossmember for the 4l80e and once everything is square I will drill new holes for the engine stand on the pass. side. Well, at least it's in. I know I need to paint thr frame, this is just a mock up. Also, with the trans pan level under the truck the oil pan only hangs about 1/2 inch below the crossmember. Shaweet.

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Just found out my van 6.0 manifolds wont work. Too much interferance with the frame on the drivers side. So, looks like I get to spend way too much on a set of headers. Does anyone know if F-body or maybe GTO headers or manifolds will work with the 4l80?

glock35ipsc 01-22-2010 03:41 PM

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Truck manifolds should work OK too with that trans, I can't imagine where they would interfere. Plus you could probably pick a set up for < $50. Probably closer to $25.

STOCKISH 01-22-2010 03:57 PM

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Yeah, I'd like to keep the manifolds but if not I'll just pick up a set of headers. I'm just glad to see it sitting in there. Need to clean and paint my accessory brackets and reinstall everything and it may start looking like a truck again.

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

:metal: Hopefully I don;t forget that I planned on having my truck manifolds ceramic coated this summer.

I need to make a list and hang it somewhere....... My brain is 40 going on 97!

I'll send you a PM in the spring to remind you.

LOL, thank you!!!!

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Josh... the gto manifolds wont work. they hit the engine mount stand.

so what is the deal with the crossmember? does it have to slide too far back or what? Bob i think i may need to hear your idea on the trans crossmember now!

STOCKISH 01-22-2010 05:55 PM

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

The stock crossmember would work if modified like PCMcobra's. I just figure if I have to modify the crossmember, I might as well make one that looks nice and will make my dual exhaust easier for my exhaust guy. No real issues other than that.

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

damn! dont kill me Bob but that BRP kit is looking better and better:lol:

STOCKISH 01-22-2010 06:00 PM

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

The BRP kit is nice but rediculously pricey in my opinion. making a trans crossmember would be super easy for you because you have the cab off. Just a straight piece if 1x3 square tube from frame rail to frame rail. Nothing fancy.

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Good point man. i'm just trying to get a rise outta Bob since we ended up commiting to the "FRED" way. figures the 80e would give us heartburn!

STOCKISH 01-22-2010 06:11 PM

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

Yeah, but I'd rather deal with modifying a crossmember and use a 80 than blowing up a 4l60e every couple months.

this is true... :metal:

Re: The 6.0 Silverado Build

You bunch of wussies! Live dangerously!!! :haha: I don't know HOW people manage to blow up 60's with relatively stock set-ups. Mine still works great, especially after the Vette servo install. I put 40,000 miles on my last 60 with a supercharged 5.3L spinning it, and pulled my RV trailer. You think I drove that one easy???

Come to think of it, my old 96 ECSB and my 00 Tahoe both had 60's in them. Boy did I ever abuse those things! That's back when I volunteered with the sheriff's dept emergency services section. Running lights and siren at 100+ mph for up to 30 minutes straight sometimes, depending where we were going. Stop & go in town.... red light, BRAKES!!!, intersection clear, HIT IT!!! Crap, grandma can't hear OR see me, BRAKES, SWERVE, HIT IT AGAIN!!! :haha: :haha: Ah, the good 'ol days!!
