After I retired I opened a Facebook account. I accepted numerous friends requests, but never saw anything of interest posted. It seemed best suited to helping my grandchildren communicate with their friends about the details of their latest trip to the mall.

I asked several users to explain the advantages of having an account, but never received a meaningful answer. After a year of finding no benefit I closed the account. I generally embrace learning new technology, but need to understand some value in it to justify monitoring yet another tool. I’ll reopen the account if I ever figure out why it’s worth having.

Ditto with Mark and lakeroadster - don't have an account, so guess that makes me a fuddy duddy - but truly hope it does not become a substitute for this site - I'D MISS YOU GUYS!!!

Re: Facebook 60-66 group page

No it wont be a substitute for this site just something else to join with if you want and if not then thats fine too its not hurting anyone.

If most of my family was not out of state, I really don't feel I would have one either. Facebook has enabled my children to get to know my cousins children. Could they had done that via mail? probably.. but this works well. I am able to talk and share pictures etc with my family in NY,Colorado, Az, FL, PA and Ca on a daily basis, where as before, some I rarely spoke to at all.

To me it is a tool to keep us in touch. If I had no reason to talk to folks, then ya I would probably have no account either.

Aside from that, I did talk to many I graduated with, and remembered why I left the area I was in ;) I did talk to past co workers etc.. but it got old quick. I just deleted them all off my friends list, minus a select few, and enjoy keeping up with good friends and family I do not get to see often.

Re: Facebook 60-66 group page

Thanks for the feedback Liz. Your input is similar to what I experienced, former co-workers wanting to be friends. Most of my contacts wanted to claim they were in touch with me in case I could find them a new job. It got old pretty quick. My friends stay in touch on the phone, so Facebook is probably not for me until something else develops.

Re: Facebook 60-66 group page

One thing I've found handy about facebook is that it's a decent way to broadcast info to your friends. You don't have to sit down and compose a mass email (remembering who to send to and who not to) You just post it on your OWN page, and if folks are interested, they can check in- totally non intrusive. So folks can see if you're still alive, what you're up to and you can do the same with them without having to slog through each others email inboxes, you just click on their page. Plus- pics and videos are easy to share and don't have to be downloaded. And the occasional friend from the past that I've fallen out of touch with has found me, and it was cool to catch up with each other.

I fear change... Joining facebook is counter to my "retire to the woods with a high-powered rifle and a string-and-can security system" motif....

I AM just kidding of course, kinda. :)

That's hilarious. There's a guy here at work who takes a picture of what he eats every lunch time, and posts it. Facebooks not for everyone, me included.
But to each his own.

I removed someone I know locally who was like that. She posted pics of her floors when she cleaned them, her kids hair when she braided it, dinner on the table when she cooked it etc. Last time I checked most Moms do that without the self inflicted pat on the back.
