Re: The Brown Turd
I just finished my first paint job last weekend also! I'm sure your orange peel will sand out. From what I gather on Orange peel, it happens from having the gun too far away, too little of air pressure, or putting it on too light. Seems the key is walking the super fine line of putting it on as heavy as you can without having it run. I really didn't want orange peel so I lathered my clear on pretty thick. I only got a few minor runs but virtually no orange peel! This is my finish straight off the gun!
http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps0cwphowt.jpg http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/t...psmvov3jda.jpg If you end up unsatisfied after you sand, you can always do a flow coat. Thats where you sand the whole thing down with something like 1000 grit or so and then put another couple wet coats if clear on. If you are anything like me tho, a good part of the reason why you attempted your own paint job was to get some experience and learn how to paint! And again if your anything like me, you learned a TON and your next paint job will rival that of a pro! Congrats! |

I defiantly got the orange peel look really bad. The lighting wasn't great and I rushed the last coat of clear(bad idea). When I paint the cab I might do it outside so I can see better and have room to move around.
The bed might need a good sanding and another coat once the truck goes back together. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: The Brown Turd
I went and bough eight 4' fluorescent twin tube lights for my garage and was surprised about how little light that was... Another thing that surprised me was how quickly the clear fog made it about impossible to see through my safety glasses! Lucky I had a few sets and changed them between coats! The primer and color didn't do that. Just the clear. Anyway, I'm sure you can save that bed by sanding as long as you got enough on there and really, worst case, a couple more coats after sanding will make it perfect.

My paint booth was in the back of my grandpas steel building and the only light was from the open garage doors a few drop lights. It also didn't help that my googles would fog up and I was painting almost blind like you were saying. Hopefully the weather will stay nice so I can finish up the rest of the truck. I think once it is all back together I will sand and put on the clear. That way I can match the panels so some don't shine more than others |

Re: The Brown Turd
I'll help in any way I can! Just remember, I'm no expert.
As I recall I was averaging 28psi. It fluctuated a lot tho! I was constantly turning it up and down as the pressure in the compressor built and dropped. But when it was at a constant 28 I was good to go. The fan I ran "90%". Basically I wound it all the way out and then back in just until I could see it started to close up. On my gun full fan was only like 2 turns out or something like that anyway. As I recall I think I was 3 turns out on the fluid. And I was using a 1.3 tip. The key to me is definitely allowing yourself to put it on heavier than you think you should, all while trying to avoid runs. It might sound stupid but one thing that helped me beyond measure was watching a guys videos on YouTube called the gunman. More specifically his gunman raw channel. It's mostly just raw footage on a helmet mounted go pro and you can watch him as he lays down clear that turns into sheets of glass. After studying his videos and taking mental snapshots of his rate of application in conjunction with his other how to videos where he actually explains his techniques was probably one of the biggest factors in me getting food results for a first timer. |
Re: The Brown Turd
y5mgisi, thanks for the reply. I have a lot of sanding to do before I can paint. I had to start with 600 just to get it relatively smooth the switched to 1000. My problem is I have no idea how to tell if I burnt through to base, I think I am still good. Also I will watch some more videos. for some reason I tend not to enough research on something until after I mess it up, but hey, that's part of the process I guess.

Re: The Brown Turd
I believe it is high solids and no I did not use reducer. The clear I used was from southern polyurethane. It was also easy because it's a 1:1 mix ratio!

I did get my cab painted a few weeks ago. No dry spray or orange peel like the bed. Weather here in too cold to paint. I will have to wait till spring to paint the rest of the panels (bummer). At least by then I will have ALL of the body work done.

Re: The Brown Turd
This winter I would like to finish the body work and rebuild my NP205. Can you replace the rear pinion seal in the differential without taking everything apart? I though while my driveshaft is dropped I might as well replace it since it is a little leaky.

Re: The Brown Turd
Its been a while so but, I do have some good news. I cut a deal with the body/collision shop next door. He will let me use his booth and advise me while I paint in exchange for some help around the shop. Also, our horseshoer, who has a lot of experience with building his own cars, is going to help me finish up my body work. Hopefully with my dad and a helper or two we can finish it this weekend. Then I can work on getting it painted, registered, and plated (found some form the correct era in our barn).
I am really itching to get I back together before my senior year is over. Its been in pieces for 2 years and sat for 2 before that. |

Another one saved! Not only saved, but coming together well and looking great. I hope you can get it done in time to use it for your last year.

Re: The Brown Turd
Thanks guy. I am very happy with how all of my body work turned out. It actually came out straight. I love the bronze especially since it was a one year only color, available only in 70. It is called "dark bronze".
|
Re: The Brown Turd
Love colors like this that have a split personality. In the shade they look like a dark dark brown. And in the sun they look like a root beer brown or something like that.

I did make a major break through exactly a year ago on the 20th and got the truck to pass smog (on the 3rd attempt), then got the Turd registered and plated. Found some old plates stashed away with the first sticker being from 1971! They are so cool especially since they are period correct and the #s and letters correspond to the county and area I live in. |
Re: The Brown Turd
Wow, very nice work on the turd! It isn't a turd anymore. That color looks great! It's really awesome to see another young man interested in these trucks. It's also cool to see you weren't afraid to get right in there and to metal work, and body work. A big congrats to you!

I like what you have done and the work that you put in while in high school. Do you have any current pictures?

Re: The Brown Turd
When the Turd got back home I started in the cab and put down acoustic tar stuff from summit and then some sound deadener with heat sheild from a local fabric store. They sold it in bulk for $20 a square yard. These trucks only need a yard and a half to cover the floor if anyone was wondering. This stuff was almost 1/2'' thick.

First round of cutting and buffing with Ira's help. Yes, it was cold playing in the water wet sanding at 20 degrees.

After many hours of cutting and buffing, the Turd was becoming more and more polished. You can now see your reflection almost clearly. Much better compared to the heavy orange peel it had from paint.
