Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
If my math is right, and it usually isn't, but that puts you around 14 or 15 now?
This truck is awesome. I want basically the same setup with a 5.9 diesel and nv4500. One Day. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you! :) There are plenty of survivor trucks out there! It seems as if the key is to get a truck from the western half of the country--vehicles don't tend to rust as easily out there.
Mine's from South Dakota, and since it doesn't have rust I guess it has to have dents. A body man once told me, "You can fix dents all day, but you can never get rid of rust!" Quote:

I just couldn't help myself, I put my carpet in just to see what it is going to look like.
Also, is it a good idea to keep the original rubber floormat underneath the carpet as a sound-deadener? |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Very Very Cool truck and an even better story!! Love the wood bed. What tire size are you running by chance?
Looks good |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks! :) Tires are 33x12.5. Mine are actually metric, they're just a hair under 33". 16" rims.
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
OK...was out at the shop today and I got the metric size for you: 295/75/R16.

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Very nice truck Andy. You did great on the price.

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you, I never truly realized it was such a great price until I told people how much I paid for it

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Small update, started painting the transfer case and frame. I painted the transfer case Chevy orange, but I decided it looked kinda of dumb as they were red from the factory.
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8f7991ce.jpg Just used Duplicolor low gloss engine paint |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Nice looking chair for a shop.
It's amazing how much thought goes into paint color for something you never really see (well, you'll see it while crawling around under the truck, but most others won't). I'm trying to decide what color to paint my transmission, too, or maybe just leave it raw aluminum. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Thinking maybe black with a body colored (ochre) pan... Keep up the good work! Frame looks pretty dang clean. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks! And  at the chair comment. lol
I agree on the color thing, I have the hardest time deciding between gloss, semi gloss, flat, etc. That sounds like a cool combo for a tranny, but like you said it's something that is commonly overlooked by most people. :( Heck, mine's got the gray paint flaking off and I can't repaint it because it's too oily! |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Big update! :)
Got my CPP Tilt column today and put it in! http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7781deb6.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps71fc5d22.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psf9b3be04.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...pse280737f.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psdae3ff86.jpg |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Liking your truck. Sort of a big brother to my '71 SWB White/Hugger
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you, your truck is nice as well :)

Andy,
Your truck is LOOKING GREAT!!!! I have the same steering wheel on two of my trucks.... My 71 must be the sister truck to yours....mine was built in St. Louis...how about yours? |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks!
Mine was built in St. Louis too. That's kinda creepy! |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Wow...same color and built in the same plant....mine is a factory 4spd and I see yours is an automatic...so they are not twins anyway....:)
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Yeah, in a way I almost wish it had a manual...but I'm glad it has an auto for drivability. Someday I'll probably get a nice, strong TH400 built to replace the TH350...I'm eventually going to have a somewhat powerful motor (400 small block is what I'm maybe looking at).
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
I have a 383 stroker motor in my 70 CST with a TH350. I put in a slightly higher than stock converter and a good shift kit and it works great.
I think the TH350 is a darn good transmission. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Luckily the PO put a new rebuilt TH350 in it, but those people drove it hard, so the tranny's already probably about gone

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Looks great! I'm all about K20's...and along for the ride.
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you! :)
While I'm here, I suppose I'll let you all in on what's been done. Last Friday we got the rear brakes finished up and got them bled with new fluid. Yesterday we tore all the front end off...it came off much easier than we expected. Today, I'm cleaning 40+ years of grease off the axle  Small question here. Did Dana 44's have outer seals? Mine didn't have them on either side, and the axle tubes were caked full of mud and grease. It just doesn't seem right with nothing there. |
