Tonight is the start of my work week so maybe I'll do it on my weekend coming up. I am going to pull the SRW 14b out and mock it up with wheels for some measurements before then. |

Nice score on the donor truck.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Tried mounting the semis with the adapters on my SRW 14B tonight to get a good overall width measurement and came upon a major hurdle. The SRW hub centric lip is ever so slightly too large of diameter for the bore of the adapters. I also tried to throw one of my dually wheels on the SRW axle and the bore is also too tight for them rims to mount which proves its not the adapters.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa7jsxmi2.jpg I don't have a caliper large enough to measure the diameter of the hub with the studs in the way so I can't tell you an exact number of how much bigger they are but I will say that it is a very very small difference. I thought about using the lugs to suck the adapter on but thought better of it. I have to remove the lug studs for longer ones anyways so I will take the hub and an adapter to a machine shop and have them machine the hub diameter down to the right size for the adapter. This led me to immediately try and mount the adapters to the dually 14b hub to make sure it wasn't an improperly machined adapter bore. The adapters went on the dually front and back without a problem. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps82z4till.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psfzxc1rfw.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspeska5gg.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pshf62f20w.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psygheqyzq.jpg I did set some wheels up with an adapter and laid them stacked up flat on the ground how they would mount on the truck and they measured 13 and 5/16 inches wide from the wheel mount surface of the adapter to the outside of the tire sidewall. The adapter is 13/16" thick. I took a measurement of how it sits right now and the rear measures out at right around 99.5 inches from outside tire sidewall to outside tire sidewall. When I get home I can measure the SRW axle from WMS to WMS and add 13 5/16" to each side to figure out how wide that will be and then measure the fenders on the truck. |

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Measured the SRW 14 bolt and it comes out at 67" WMS to WMS which would bring my total width to somewhere around 93.5" total width outside sidewall to outside sidewall once the semi wheels are mounted up.
I may end up having a machine shop take 3/8" off the face of each rear wheel to get some extra clearance at the fender. Right now the wheels are sticking out 2" past the outside lip of the fender with a total width of 99.5" sidewall to sidewall with the DRW axle. My SRW 14 bolt came from a 1974 C20 regular cab long bed truck. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I got a measurement of 2-3/4 inches on each side that my wheels stick out measured from just inside of the fenders lips. That's cutting it pretty close if i went with the numbers you have:waah:

Got some time in on the dodge.

Should be able to button up the throttle linkage, trans linkage, and few other things and be ready to pull the driveshaft and blow mounts apart for final removal. One step closer to getting the dually in and tore up. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Tonight's solo adventure went a little like this.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psvjouublg.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psqqanbyhq.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psx71odhkt.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psz3lsevmd.jpg Very tight fit http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psom7aqvn8.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psybbfhevp.jpg On another note, I found this thing is pretty local to me. The guy wants $300 for the trailer and shell, I don't need the trailer but the shell has an odd enough look to it that might actually work for one of these slammed trucks. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psoiatz256.jpg Thoughts? |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Cool buiild, it'll look great laid out over those alcoas . I'm watching

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
More uninteresting cummins related stuff showing up.
Bunch of gaskets, a few to fix some leaks and some to go in and do the KDP fix. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psebieul54.jpg 4k GSK, valve spring tool and bar over tool http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psz9iydajk.jpg 60lb valve springs http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdqtqykd3.jpg I'm trying to get this dodge out of my garage, I have a few local cummins enthusiasts that are interested in taking it so hopefully that pans out. I don't have the room to keep it around and part it out. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Looks tough on the Alcoas...definitely watching this thread

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Made some room finally.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdkwvdhgt.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslnrixiqw.jpg And painfully moved it in, my driveway isn't any wider than the garage door so this was a challenge to do single-handed. I only got it in just far enough to close the doors, my roommate was at work. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdowjns0m.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psuatzpzct.jpg I'll be starting to slowly tear it down after I get it all the way in. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Did a little work today, started by removing the running boards and dropping the gas tank. Removed the fuel lines and started on the brake lines to get the inside of the frame cleared out for the 4x3 bracing. The trans crossmember is also in the way mounting inside the frame and being as the drivetrain isn't being reused I moved to the front to get everything out of the way for the engine/trans to come out.
Sorry for the blurry pics, hard to take pics without smearing grease all over my phone. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspx9bpcqb.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psonkkd7ic.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psfindt9vl.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps4wmmcvuq.jpg Was only 98 degrees in the garage due to rain so not as bad as it could be. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
More pictures of the frame and trans crossmember.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2ixr5z63.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbyzc2wta.jpg Outside frame, going to grind the rivets out of the body mounts and puts some bolts in temporarily so the mounts can be welded to the frame. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7gmgqiwy.jpg Another mellow day. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdosa6p3e.jpg A little progress today before stopping early to take the family out to eat. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pshcifazy3.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psvafewnpw.jpg Wish gm would have made the engine harness a separate section of the main harness, so much crap on this TBI motor. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psihulnbbo.jpg literally crap http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspmyf8drd.jpg Hauling the 454 to storage tomorrow and then carrying on. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Putting a lot of work in, this will be done in no time at this rate. Looking forward to the cummins.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Still doing lots of tedious little stuff on the truck when I can. Lots of other summer stuff getting in the way.
Got the body mount rivets ground and drilled out and the mounts welded back on. First frame tube mocked up. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps3tlcqrm2.jpg Tail tube mocked. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pse2r8lhtt.jpg I got frame tubes for both sides mocked up, gonna get the cab raised up off the frame before I can go much further. Whipped up some jack stand extensions for the body, its 'light' so these will do the trick. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psgbe9grtj.jpg |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Got it up in the air.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psclkxxfgu.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psh7j2wuuc.jpg Picked up some stands. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psoxllekil.jpg They fit better. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslkxxqvpw.jpg Got started on welding, took three days of sporadic welding, letting everything cool between sets of stitches. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb2cczcip.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps0zy5ilzs.jpg Overtemp'd the welder on the first day. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psv8po2ryp.jpg Few more random. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9kwdvfyg.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psj679fn3j.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pssa6z78bb.jpg The tubes are fully welded for the most part. I want to add a few gussets to tie them into the frame at the front where it kicks up. I also got the front crossmember all out of the way so I can start on cleaning the frame up and getting the DM fitted up. Waiting on a few misc front suspension/chassis parts like bushings and hubs/brakes. Then I gotta get the bed off and out of the garage to start on the back. I have been distracted with desert racing all summer, chasing/pit crew for the Vegas2Reno desert race and codriving for an upcoming Bluewater Desert Challenge race along with prepping the race truck has been diverting my time. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
And to help with the desert stuff going forward I picked up a few fab goodies.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psxtt34nhz.png http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psch3xytmc.jpg And also some general fab stuff. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psatfislam.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psizijqkty.jpg |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Looking good. :metal: After seeing what you are doing I ain't ever going to complain about having to move a couple of things in my garage in order to work on something. I can't wait to see it moving again and then done.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I have yet to kick the overload on any welder. I must not be welding enough!!
Nice work. Everything looks great. I am super jealous of you new tools. I was just in Vegas visiting some friends. You must have AC in your garage.... |

Housing is supposed to be cheap out here but finding something affordable with a large or detached garage IN a decent neighborhood is impossible. I think I'm lucky to have a 3 stall.:waah::lol: Quote:
I really wish my garage was air conditioned, having a brew while working isn't an option if you want to stay conscious, which sucks! Its toasty for sure but 'winter' is coming temps are about to come down. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I can't lie, this Vegas heat is the real reason I haven't been in my shop to put in work. Every time I'm in there and it's 105* I find myself just laying down underneath my project.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
The struggle is real! I can't wait for it to cool down.
