Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
My Son and I are learning a lot on this build. We have never done anything like this before but we plan on building a second one as soon as we finish this one and I think it will be much easier and we will know what not to do the second time around...Norm...

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Sorry I didn't ever reply to you, I only get to use a computer at work, and there are three of us that share one computer so it's hard to reply or see what people say on here. I don't have a build thread yet just because I haven't been able to work on her much. I have a thread introducing myself and telling a little about my truck though, if you want to check that out. Your guys' truck is looking great! I am so excited to see it done and rolling down the street. It's gonna look killer and knowing that it is unlike anything else is the best part. Thanks for posting the cool build.:chevy:

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Thank you very much for the positive feedback. It's been a lot of work getting it to where it is now, and it's still going to be a lot of work to get it finished and on the road. We really appreciate the positive feedback.

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Well here's a uh..partial update.
Rolled the cab off of our parts truck. Cut up the cab, saved the back window and the dash/firewall, and the front 60/40. http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...26650731_n.jpg Cleaned out the front of the cab of the 4-door, and set the 60/40 in. Actually doesn't look too bad. http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...50740126_n.jpg http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...49482333_n.jpg |

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Hope y'all like updates.....because, it's update time. :D
First off - new frame. After it was all said and done...we looked over the half-ton frame and made a decision that it wasn't big or strong enough - so we did the next best thing. Go bigger. And go bigger, means, big, beefy framerails. Big beefy framerails from a '54 Chevy commercial truck...1 1/2-ton or 2-ton, not quite sure. Here's some before pics...with the half-ton frame still there, but a comparison. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...57924259_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...48923663_n.jpg After cutting off the half-ton frame http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...31116039_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...28177868_n.jpg New rails in place. Old frame is encased in the big frame. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...21756641_n.jpg Now to give everyone a good idea of what this damn thing will look like.. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...42862486_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...59512177_n.jpg And...goodies. First of all...new front clip. Actually...the '98 front clip, off of the parts truck we had. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...54232931_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...93993648_n.jpg Next, new back doors. Off of I think a '96 Suburban. That means...newer style door panels. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...38664768_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...41832326_n.jpg |

I apologize for the rusty looking steel  It's been pouring here. Anyway, I do have a question. Has anyone ever done a frame like this or seen a frame done like this? And we do intend to weld it....but even just bolted, it's not going anywhere. |

Cab is up off the frame.
Now with the cab up, we can move the chassis around. When the cab goes back down, it's going down on a body lift.:metal: |

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
News, updates, all that good stuff. Frame is completely out from under the cab. Cab is up in the air. Built a home-made rotisserie today!
Now for the pics. You can see the hub used for the rotisserie. Simple 6-lug hub off of a farm implement. It works. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...72452331_n.jpg Forks coming off of the rotisserie. Bolted to the body mounts on the cab. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...31172695_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...52856467_n.jpg Adapters bolted to the jack, hub bolted to the adapters. Box tubing welded to the hub, and on the box tubing is 2 sleeves with forks, bolted to the body mounts. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...60402746_n.jpg Cab is being held up by a strap that's hooked to the roof, and the rotisserie. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...75874164_n.jpg Second pallet jack, will be converted to a rotisserie tomorrow. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...58832481_n.jpg Frame completely out from under the cab. Now with the cab up and the cab and frame separated, cab can be turned over to finish up the bottom, weld it up and seal it. Also can finish up the frame and clean it. Now that it's all naked...here's a couple teasers for everyone!;) http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...83757652_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...63133369_n.jpg |
Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Like where you are going with this, but not going to lie....that rear frame portion makes me cringe a bit. Not tryin to be a dick, but I think there should be another route taken on that area. But like I said, I like where you are going with it regardless.
I think I would have just stretched an original frame together and did more a less what some of us have done to shorten the crews. Cut two frames on the long side and piece them together where the wheelbase makes sense. Keep up the momentum though, great progress. |
Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Frame isn't even close to done. It's got some welding and plating before it's finished. Right now the rear rails are just bolted in place. They still have to come off to be finished up. As for the frame stretching, we started out adding a half-ton frame to the Suburban frame. It was too light-weight for what we're gonna use the truck for, plus it dove down. So, we added the 2-ton frame rails to it. Thanks for the feedback, though. :)
|
Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Also, the original Suburban framerails are encased inside the 2-ton rails. So the original frame is still there.
|
Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
As a co builder of the 50/50 I agree the frame is not looking to good right now. We have another complete 4x4 frame from an x-cab short bed that we could use to split it under the cab, and that may happen before its over. And it would be very easy to do now that the cab is off of the frame. We are happy to hear all input on every part of the build. Even if it you feel it wont work. This is a first for us too. Thanks for all of your input ...Norm...

Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Updates updates updates....
Not much done recently. Got the cab completely on a rotisserie, and did some rust repair here and there. A little rocker repair work. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...95971960_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...66872946_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...79950243_n.jpg And here's our home-made rotisserie. It works. :D http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...38202525_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...31549824_n.jpg |
Re: 94 Suburban to Crew Build: The 50/50 Turban
Here's a few more updates.
Doors are off, rear seats out, remainder of the carpet out, seatbelts removed. Cab is completely empty. Also, roof rack is off. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...20396833_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...63153236_n.jpg It's a lot lighter without the doors and that bulky rear seat. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...13247741_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...75605875_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...82274796_n.jpg We don't have a lock system to lock it in place, so we're using a strap to hold it in place. It rotates VERY nicely without the extra weight. The inside of the cab has a lot of work to go. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...04885017_n.jpg Here's our little electrolysis rust removal...tools tend to get rusty when you forget about them and leave them in weather. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...45863430_n.jpg |
