Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Including the day spent moving the truck from the back of the shop to the main room, I believe that I've been over there 41 days (usually for about 4 hours or so) now. I'm not sure how many hours I have in the cab specifically.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
After spending the past two months working on my F150, racing the Coug at Gateway (ran a new personal best of 12.097 @ 114.15 MPH), and cutting/splitting a winter's worth of firewood, we're finally back to work. :metal:
Today we pulled the windshield, removed the steering column and brake pedal, stripped the instrument cluster, heater box, wiring, etc out of the dash, did a little sanding, and spent a good hour just getting things organized. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1170962.jpg It's great to be back on this project. :) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1170946.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Your truck build is really looking amazing. You are doing excellent work on the rust repair and your "65 had a lot it seems. Keep up the great job and thanks for updating your build thread. It is great to see the progress that you are making on your truck and reading and knowing the family history that your truck has. Keep the updates coming.

Doing good work! Keep it up!:chevy:

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks guys! I was out of town for Thanksgiving last week/weekend, so I didn't get anything done. I hope to get some hours in this coming weekend.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
As always don't forget to post a TON a pictures!!! lol!:mm:

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Spent the morning touching up a few welds on the cab floor and the afternoon playing with possible paint colors for the interior. Currently leaning toward this shade (satin nickel), but we'll see.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
That looks almost factory interior color, same tone as mine in the light however, lol.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Yep, that one has more gold in it than I expected, but it's still closer to silver than the original fawn.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I made up this handy little diagram the other day. The factory firewall really doesn't look all that busy until you start labeling all of the holes in it. I should be able to move a few holes to better hide the wiring harnesses, and some holes can be deleted altogether.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Pretty sure the small circle you have labled as Engine Harness between the large one and the one labled Heater Box is your windshield washer fluid access. Am pretty certain there is a 2 hole grommet that fits there for your push and pull washer fluid lines.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
For your truck specifically I cannot say sir.
My 66 however has it. The wiper fluid pump is integrated with the wiper motor, although the fluid resevour was mounted next to the radiator on the d-side of the engine compartment. Right next to the voltage regulator (of all smart things....) I posted because I really liked your mapping all this out, I would have found it very useful about 8 months ago for my build. |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
My '65 doesn't have a W/S washer… yet that is...:mm:
Just saved your firewall diagram, will be using it when I get that far...:metal: I really like the two-tone colors you are putting together...;) |

I did find a great diagram of the optional system though: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=560357 I'm sure we'll eventually install a washer fluid setup, but I really doubt that it will be a factory setup. Quote:

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
What a cool build! This truck is going to be awesome when it's done.
Congrats on the personal best ET/mph. You're just a change in weather away from getting in the 11s. That is a fast car! GREAT WORK on the firewall diagram. That needs to be in the FAQ section as a Sticky. So many guys (like me) went a little crazy filling firewall holes only to find out that we had to redrill a few when we starting wiring and plumbing the truck. Your diagram is a great reference tool. Thank You for doing that! |

Shaping up nicely! Great work on the diagram.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks guys! I'll hopefully have some decent updates to report here after Christmas, as I plan to take some time off work so I can make some progress on the truck.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
You have been doing a bunch of metal replacement. Your cougar looks great!

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks!
I had a couple hours available today, so I swung by the shop and deleted the factory firewall holes for the engine harness, oil pressure line, and headlight/horn harness, along with a few other small holes (six holes total thus far). The engine harness and headlight/horn wiring will be relocated so that the wiring is hidden from view. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180315.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
The chassis is sitting on wheels/tires for the first time in almost a year. It'll definitely require a bit of a drop.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Awesome! love the pics, its helping me tremendously, im doing cab supports/rockers right now.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Some friends dropped by today, so we put them to work flipping the cab onto its back. The cab is strapped to a skid, topped with 1" oak plywood and a layer of carpet. It isn't particularly heavy, but it was nice to have some extra arms there to keep everything under control.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070480.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070481.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070486.jpg Then the cab took a ride around the shop to another bay. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070499.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070503.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070508.jpg Ready to clean up, smooth out, and finish welding the underside of the cab. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1070510.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180357.jpg The next step for the chassis will be a trip to the quarter car wash for a serious de-greasing. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180366.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I've put another nine hours into the underside of the cab over the past two days, though the changes aren't all that noticeable from just a photo. For example, a solid hour went into just replacing the floor at the base of the throttle pedal area today.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180409.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180415.jpg The rest of the time went into smoothing out welds and welding areas that I had skipped over until the cab was on its back. Still a little ways to go before it sees primer. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180410.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I finished up welding everything on the underside of the cab today. It's ready to wire-wheel, clean, and coat.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180431.jpg Note the high-dollar cab rotisserie. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180427.jpg I use a bunch of tools, but I feel like these few have become my best friends over the past year. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180425.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Too cool. Awesome work. Im doing the same thing, and man, I underestimated the amount of work this would be. You look like your getting a lot accomplished though.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Spent the morning getting caught back up on your build. You've gotten tons done. Makes me wanna get back out on mine.
Lookin Good |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks guys. It certainly is a lot of work, but I really enjoy it.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
30yrs in the autobody trade , so know where your coming from . I'm in the process of doing my ' 64 Lwb now an into spring when weather cooperates some. Your build gives a lil motivation. Keep the updates coming

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Will do!
I spent the afternoon cleaning up the underside of the cab, which is honestly one of my least favorite jobs. The original tar-based undercoating is just a mess to deal with. Everything shown in primer was wire-wheeled, sanded with 80-grit paper on the DA, then wiped down with Acetone. Everything not in primer is obviously yet to be touched. Once it's all in primer, it will get seam-sealed, primed again, painted, then coated with Raptor bedliner. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180434.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180441.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Good work on the cab! :chevy:
|
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks! I had hoped to finish cleaning up the underside today, but I managed to get wrapped up in other projects. It may have to wait until next weekend now.
|
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
cab bottom is looking good. it was a ton of work to get to this point but a fresh coat of bed liner makes it all worth it. looking to see the final result.
will you do the floor side in liner also? sure makes for a nice seal... |

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks! We finished cleaning up the underside of the cab today. It's great to just see it all in one color finally.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Looks good, let us know what you think of the Raptor after you spray it, I am going to use it on mine.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Will do!
I forgot to post a picture of this when I was cleaning up the underside of the cab. The wire-wheels and cup brushes did a great job, but they couldn't reach some of the nooks and crannies. The old guy whipped this up real quick out of round stock, a plumber's brush, and a couple 1/4-20 set screws. It worked out great. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1180616.jpg |
