Re: 79 K20 Custom Deluxe - Goldy LS1

Took a trip to the wrecking yard, couldn't find a battery tray but did find a cooling fan from an S10, not sure the year, but it was just laying in the engine bay and I noticed the longer shaft on the clutch, which got the wheels spinning in my head so I bought it. Before I could even test fit it, I had to cut my crossmember out, I'm thinking of just moving it right in front of the steering box bolts, I think with the boxing and crossmember being so close there should still be enough strength. I will need to replace the fan clutch with new since this one is leaking, so hopefully I can find a part number on it, if I do I will post it. I also reworked the 84 K10 battery tray to work. No wiring was done due to me not being able to focus on one thing for more than 10 seconds....

Battery tray, ugly but it should hold.

Re: 79 K20 Custom Deluxe - Goldy LS1

It's been slow going with the wiring, I have been on it for over a week. It's not glamorous but overall not to bad, just time consuming. I am happy I went with a small fuse box and a few relays. It's mostly done at this point, other than grounding and testing everything in the cab, running some ignition wires, and a little more loom work. It's not as pretty as some I have seen on the site but as long as it works I'm happy!

Looking good, I like the video's. The pcm mounted on the engine should be ok. I do a lot of work on Ford diesels and the injector driver module is mounted on the top by the turbo. Did I miss it or are you going to hook the evap up this truck like you did on the k5? I am doing a similar swap on a swb truck and getting ready to finish up the evap for emission reasons.

Thanks

Did you intend for the front axle to be further forward? Curious to know the benefits/advantages.

Thanks for the info on the pcm. I have all of the stuff, but I'm not that far yet, still trying to figure out which fuel tank set up I will run.

Yes with the 52" springs the axle is 2"ish forward, it helps for running a larger tire on a smaller lift so that it doesn't rub on the cab while articulating etc and it will help with approach/departure angle while wheeling.

Where you at White? Taking a break? I enjoy watching your videos/progress, much better than most of what you see on the Velocity channel.

Thanks, I appreciate it! Sort of taking a break, just haven't been hitting it as hard, since I will probably be moving soon. Don't want to get into a big project, or at least tear something more apart than it already is. Trying to keep the truck together enough so I can roll it on a trailer and then off with most everything in tact.

Here is your video Jake, I did manage to make it to the wrecking yard and do some wire looming.

That should make for a real nice approach angle.

Looking good! I know your new place will have a work area or you would not consider it. Is it an improvement over what you have now? Not that your current place is bad but, you know, one never has enough room.

Digging the junkyard visits/scores.

Dave - Glad you saved another square. :metal: :metal:
Your DIY/on the cheap is an inspiration to people who don't have or want to spend a lot of money to have a dependable DD or toy. Being a Foster Parent and giving up your nice Camaro is another example of your inspiration to us. Keep up the awesome work. Can't wait to see the new Pad. Hopefully no HOA.

Thanks man! I want to save more squares, the other day I saw a 1 ton square dump truck in good shape and was almost tempted but I have to finish my two projects before starting another. I try to keep it cheap, it keeps the wife off my back and If I can make/do it for less why not. Still have an HOA, but hopefully they take it easy on me and the old squares!

Update video as well, hopefully I can get back to working on this sucker soon!

More work, spent a productive Saturday, working on the LS1 for a few, popped the heads on, moved onto the frame, removed some rivets and got the shackle flip and 56" springs on.

Thanks Marcus, it's been a while since I have updated this build and I have been thinking a lot about the direction of this truck. After doing some wheelin with the K10 it has made me change my mind on the whole turbo400 doubler situation, since the SM465 without a doubler still has a lower crawl ratio. After some heavy thought I have decided to turn this into my tow / daily rig and put more work into making the K10 a more capable trail rig. So as of now that's the plan, which may change at any moment especially when I have too much time to think! I still have plenty of work to do with the K20 so I hope I haven't lost anyone with the change up. Let's get back to work enjoy the video.
