I didn't think it would be the same as the back of the cab is so different.

All he needs is the outer roof skin and they are all the same.

I have a guy that wants to sell me a GMC cab for parts and the outer roof skin looks a lot better than mine plus it has the cab lights which I would love to have on my truck. My question is how hard would it be to do a swap

All you need to do is drill out the 105 spotwelds around the drip rail and the 28 spotwelds across the back seam.... Well, you wouldn't have to drill out all 105 because you would only have to go back to the back roof seam on the drip rail.

So not doing the roof swap. thanks for the info on how to do it though. I got a set of kd 517s from a salvage yard and bases that will work from a set of Yankee 77s. My question is does anyone know where I can get reproduction housings for them. The ones I got aren't in the greatest of shape. I'm going to run the cab lights with the original housings until I can find new ones. But I would definitely like to find replacements sooner than later

should've clarified, could've gotten yankee 77's out of salvage yard. looking for reproduction kd 517 housings. I have the bases that will work just fine for these housings from a set of yankee 77's, but that's not what I'm looking for. just the kd 517 housings

Yes, I figured that out after I posted and deleted my post....

Here's two styles, kd518-which are nearly identical to the Yankee 77's.
And a kd517, my favorite. The 517's belong on earlier cabs because of style and base curvature. The bases simply won't intermingle. No one repreduces the kd517, most likely because of the glass lens. You can get repro Yankee 77's, housing is plastic, seen sets for around $29 on Amazon

Taillight King sells Yankee 77's with different color lenses. I think they're $20 a piece

thanks for info. wish someone would reproduce the kd517 housings. i have good ls303 glass lenses and have a set of rubber bases from a set of yankee 77s that will work with the kd517 housings but my housings are all rusted to the point that I need new ones. I get I will use them till I can get a good set of housings. the allstate sp247 cab lights also look like kd517s but no one reproduces those either.

I forget where I got my Yankee 77s but they're metal. It might have been LMC, to be honest. But the bodies aren't plastic that's for sure.

I realize that doesn't help you with KD517s just wanted to clarify for anyone reading along about the 77s

Here's three reds, I see they're not cheap!

Yes, real 77's are metal, the $29 repros are plastic

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

And not to start a pissing match, Yankee 77's never had a glass lense, it simply would not work having a screw through the lense and risk cracking it. That's why earlier glass lense cab lights had the outer housing sit on top of the lens to hold them in.

Now you did it.

I found (5) NOS Do-Ray 410's and had to buy them for my K20 Suburban :metal:

Well, I've never been wrong before, but this could be a first. Probably true. It's five years ago and I'm working from a memory of the sound the screw made, but that was probably on the housing, not the lens.

I'll double check out in the shop but for now, assume metal body and plastic lens like Panelman says!

One you've secured them post the link, I'd like to see them!

Excuse the dirty windshield I am in the middle of replacing the rocker panels.

My research says that the Do-Ray 410's lens interchange with the KD 517. In fact they have near identical housings with a similar curved base.

In the group I got there are two early units (1961?) with glass lenses and nice chrome. The other three are later with plastic lenses (still marked Do-Ray) and the chrome isn't as good quality. I think they will look good although I might hunt down matching glass lenses.

Although the do-ray lights do look great (nice buy) I still think that I will wait for nos 517 housings to show up online cheaper than $100 for one housing

Previous owner added cab lights to a stock roof then removed them and covered the holes with duct tape.
I got period correct 1313's.
The previous owner had the 3 middle holes a little too far back so it's pretty tight clearance between the inner and outer roof skins. Between that and trying to get the old wiring out of there made for a challenging day.
When all was said and done, I'm happy with the way things turned out.

I would like to add some marker lights. Even have power lead coiled under the seat waiting for me to get around to the project. Can someone confirm there is no obstruction to feed a wire from the roof down the driver's cab corner. Or is it easier to go down the passenger side to avoid the filler neck?

I went down the driver's side following the harness that the cargo and interior light wiring goes with then tucked it in the door sill. No issues.

Good to know. Parts in hand. I will stick to the plan, and on the long list of to do items.

I added the Yankee 77's to mine. I went down through the drivers side "A" pillar with the wire. I fed a speedometer cable through the visor hole and down the pillar, then pulled the wire through with that. Worked good.

This. I used a piece of string and some compressed air but the idea is the same. Factory wiring is routed in the A-pillar and comes out through a grommet above the kick panel vent opening

I believe the Assembly Manual has the measurements for installing this type, but I have not confirmed that the holes were drilled in the "factory" correct locations.

I seem to recall seeing the diagram OhBoy is referring to but after 2 hours of searching have come up empty trying to find it. I found the wire diagram, page 456 in the electronic version of the assembly manual, but not the measurement diagram. Anyone have an image or location of the measurement diagram?

Well what's another hour. Found this thread. Not the diagram I was thinking of but looks good. I'll test place and see how it looks.
