Re: Old Girl (aka Project Underhaulin)

If it’s a 3.73, you’d probably be okay with the 30” tire, but it may hunt OD (shift back & forth between 3rd & OD) at lower speeds (40-60 mph). My ‘87 did that terribly on all these backroads up here, so I went to a 28” tire and all was “cured”.

You know you can just jack the rear of the truck up, put it in neutral, mark a spot on the pinion & a spot on one of the rear tires and just spin the tire and count the revolutions of the tire vs the pinion and you’ve got the gear ratio. 2-3/4=2.73, 3’ish=3.08, 3-1/4=3.27, 3-1/2=3.42, 3-3/4=3.73. You get the picture.

Ah, these are the wheels I've been eying for my truck but have yet to see a set installed, so looking forward to seeing them on the truck and how the offsets look.

I'd go with the 28" tall tire.

I tried that and it came out to 1-3/4... I don't think that's right.

So you guys are thinking 28" all the way around is the ticket? That would make things easy for sure. We just bought a tach dash, I'd like to drive the truck with it installed to see what we are actually taching at 55, 65, and 70. If we're going to take this thing on the highway it needs to be able to keep up!

A few updates for the Old Girl...

Picked up a brake upgrade from Boris at Street Machinery, D52 Calipers up front and a D154 rear kit with e-brake.

Attachment 1772898

The Billet Specialties Speedways all mounted up, also from Boris.

Here's a pic of the Speedways on the truck.

And the UNDRHLD (Underhauled) vanity plate finally showed up. Just a nod to all those who did their best to help it come together.

Thanks, the wheels are 20x8.5 with 4.75 back space and the tires are 255/40-20 all the way around.
**this truck has the longer '71/'72 rear end**

Nice, I kind of wish we used a taller tire in the rear, like a 255/50-20 but they're mounted now so it is waht it is.

Trucks looks very nice! Was Boris good to work with?

Found this guy hanging out in my shop a couple weeks ago.

Wow! Some time ago I stopped searching "Underhaulin" hoping for an update and I just stumbled across this thread and what a heart warmer. I am so glad to see it moving and looking so good.
I even like the new wheels(didn't think I would LOL)

I think they're in Biloxi, or at least near there.

Boris is great to work with, and he knows what these trucks need parts wise. Has the part numbers in his head I believe. And he has the best deal on Wilwood and Billet Specialties for sure.

Well, I (we) won't be making the Dead-end Garage crawfish boil. I'm bummed to say the least. We ran into some metal shavings in the rear end housing creating concern for the bearings and such. To err on the side of caution I ordered new axles, bearing, gear, and an Eaton Truetrac posi. Now we're waiting to find someone who'll work on it. Once we get the rear end rebuilt we'll be able to button up the brake install and get the truck back on the road.

Front brakes assembled and ready for bleeding.

Collage of the axle wear.
Attachment 1777198

In this pick it shows one of the offset bearings used to correct the issue with the axles. I don't think it was installed completely in the housing.

Some of the metal found in the housing and axle tubes.

Man, that's a bad deal on the rear end. At least you found it now though.
