Some great additions since I last saw this thread. Hauling on a slant my appear hairy but I assure you it's a common practice with no more issues than hauling level.

The ramps also allowed easy access to the under side of the race cars. This wedge design was not only safe and practical but it gave you room for spare parts stowage, generators, water tanks, etc. I love mine and apparently so did a lot of racers and mechanics.

Amen, and I think that Porche broke because its owner didnt haul it to the track with a Chevy:lol:

You can almost hear those Vegas starting to rust as they headed towards the showrooms! I think those little cars were assembled with rust inside them at the plant.

There's a better picture of that Gene Winfield creation! (minus the bed ornament). I always lose track of what I posted on these picture threads. Thanks for some new ones.

Man this thread is awesome. Will you guys find me one to buy already? haha I would love a 67 to 72 to haul my 67 camaro around on to shows...I seen one for sale here in california about a year ago on Craigslist I think and wasnt really looking for one at the time.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

There was a 70 C30 for sale over here a couple of years ago, just a bare chassis cab but with the frame already stretched. Would have made a great ramp truck but no cash, no room and no need for one.

Has anybody here ever built a slantack? I have a 1ton and would love to put a slantback on, but I don't see too many around. Are they the kind of things people built on their own back in the day, or were they mostly bought from manufacturers?

as far as I know they were all built individually, I don't think they were ever manufactured

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Hodges has been making them in the 1st part of the 70's.

special-K 01-23-2012 10:58 PM

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

www.hodgescustomhaulers.com ...I'm sure many were professionally built at other truck upfitter shops. You'll notice many in this thread are built the same. Hodges have evolved into a lower flatter deck. They are primarily used for used car transport by used car wholesalers and dealers.

They make some cool beds

coops714x4 01-24-2012 10:59 AM

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

I learned something there... is there a way of telling, like a nameplate or some way to identify one of these hauler beds ?

special-K 01-25-2012 07:40 AM

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Not sure about that,Coop.I imagine maybe a bigger shop might have an ID tag.

coops714x4 01-25-2012 10:09 AM

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

does hodges "mark" there haulers now ? if so I would think they would have done it back then too. the bed I just pulled off of my 72 C30 was made by American trailers, it had a big ID tag right on the back of it.
