Re: Project 71 long time with 4.8 vortec swap!!!
Nice job! I am wondering about doing a 4.8 swap in my 87 4x4 longbed but I am worried that it wont be strong enough...

Re: Project 71 long time with 4.8 vortec swap!!!
the 4.8 is rated for 270-290 hp 285-295lbs torque with is the same if not a little more then a stock 350

My problem is now, that I rebuilt a 350 tbi out of a 92 for my 87 truck. It was rebuilt with flat top pistons, .030 over, 193 swirl port heads and a vortec cam set up, the powerband of the truck isn't where it used to be. I am having low rpm torque issues where my torque isn't where it is supposed to be and I am having low rpm shifts that are causing the truck to "lug" until its back above 1500 rpm. I have been fighting with that setup for over a year, I am at the point now I say screw tbi and I want to go to ls efi swap, even though my setup now has less than 10k miles. I am tired of putting $ in it trying to get it right. |

Nasty- I have been driving a 4.8l extended cab Silverado for the last year and a half-ish and can say it kills any 5.7 carb, throttle body, or mpfi 5.7 (gen1 motors) that I have ever driven. If you are concerned about it comparing to an '87 its not even close. '87 is an early TBI I believe rated for 200 hp. The 4.8 screams when you hit the gas and fries tires at will. I was very impressed with the 4.8l. I would not hesitate to drop a 4.8 into anything. They flat kick butt and are less thirsty than the 5.3l. I can tell my 5.3 has a little more torque and the 4.8 runs higher rpms but the 4.8 gets better mileage. It may just be mental but that's my story. ;) Nice build Dave, glad you got her running!:metal: |
Re: Project 71 long time with 4.8 vortec swap!!!
i was in the same boat sort of i built a 305 to replace me 307 while i drove it bored 30 over flat tops with stock cam and stock reworked heads i fought it for over 3 years trying tog et it running right sever different carbs different distributors different intakes finnaly my last straw was it sit for 6 months and went to fire it back up and it broke a push rod i was looking at about another 9 hundred doolars to rework the heads and a new cam and lifter sit and i said forget it i picked up my 4.8 with 4l60e computer harness pedal and tac module and all accessories expect for ac for 1100 dollars i been wanting to do this for along time all i got left now is tires exhaust and finish the main wiring for my rear lights

Re: Project 71 long time with 4.8 vortec swap!!!
Thanks guys!! I was worried about the 4.8 but yall have given me the confidence.
I am basically getting the whole truck minues hood, fenders, doors, bed for less than a $1000 and it runs and drives, I played with it yesterday. So the 4.8 is how I am going then. I just wanted some testimonials. I may research a "towing" cam for the 4.8 but thats about it. I also heard that from deleting egr, emissions, and cats that it will gain around 40HP w/ exhaust. This truck I am buying already has true duals on it. I had a 01 single cab step side silverado w/ 4.8 I could squeeze 25mpg out of on a good day! But it didn't like hills at all and when I tried to tow a 16' car trailer it didn't like that either but I am thinking it had like 3.08 gears or something. |
Re: Project 71 long time with 4.8 vortec swap!!!
So...I read this thread, and immediately wanted to know more about the 4.8 swap. An LS is in my long term goals, and now I have more information. Perhaps this might help any of you in your quest for the right engine for you.

Re: Project 71 long time with 4.8 vortec swap!!!
I started a build thread but so far it's going slow until I can determine condition of the 4l60e! Once everything is running perfectly I can gonna put it in overdrive! Pun intended!
