Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
The front's are 15 x 8 1/2 and the rears are 15 x 10. The rear kit was $399.00 and $40 shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-1970-ch...item4cebd3fe2b

I got the stock rear shocks installed, and now the rear goes all the way down to the bump stops. I got my front end rebuild kit installed today. Now all I should need is an alignment, and the Captain should be taming the roads in the very near future. I did notice, with the bags all the way down, the left rear tire is at the outer edge of the wheel well, and the passenger rear is tucked in a few inches. I'll have to check the differences when it's set at my desired cruising height, and I might have to get an adjustable panhard bar. More money, I guess.

I started grafting my Cadillac SRX tail lights onto my spare bed. MY friend Charlie is a great fabricator, so I'm more of his helper than anything/

I've been messing around with the grille on the truck. MY friend gave me the grille, and I cut out the center bar, cut up and repurposed the stainless trim, and remounted the stock turn signals.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
MY latest conquest was buying a 2004 GMC Savana 2500 to rob the 4.8l engine and transmission, the wiring harness, dash cluster, and any other stuff I can graft onto the 68.

So....I got the 4.8l and trans sitting in the engine compartment, and my exhaust came in. It's a stainless steel exhaust, including headers, high flow cats and a y-pipe into a 2bolt flange. man, is it pretty.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Looking good. You will love the LS swap, best thing I have done to my truck yet. Oh, and the 4.8's love boost, who wouldn't love a turbo'ed Captain America?

Just a quick update. I've been chipping away at the little details, hoping to fire the engine and drive down the road. I've got the engine and trans mounted, new driveshaft, fuel pump installed, with new lines run. My favorite is the air suspension. I mounted the compressor behind the cab on the driver's side, The air tank is nestled inside the frame, opposite the exhaust. I installed an air ride level sensor, so no matter how light or heavy I load the truck, the ride height will stay the same. No sagging ass end, even with a loaded trailer. The fuel pump wiring is the next obstacle I have to tackle.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Nice work Josh, engine looks great and the grill you did is super slick. I really like the grill. Can't wait to see it in person.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Well, the captain is up and running. I did three test drives, each one a little longer than the next. Feeling good about my progress. Still have to wire up the wiper motor and clean up the cabin area inside. Bad news, i took the ignition key out, and now i can't find it. It figures as soon as i get her up and running, I lose the keys!!

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
Looking good, Josh. You got that motor installed and wired up pretty quickly!

Ok, so I've got drivability issues resolved. I am loving the way it drives and handles.
I have 235/70R15's on the front, and they rub the inner fenders when I hit small bumps. Wednesday, I'll swap out to 235/60's and get an alignment since I put the 2 inch lowering springs in the front (with 2 1/2" drop spindles). I adjusted the ride level in the back so it didn't have such a rake on it. I'll fine tune that when I get the bed installed. If you notice the trim around the grille missing, that's because my dad was being a smart ass and backed into the front clip. It missed the grille, but caught the trim with the bottom of the receiver on the trailer hitch. If anyone has a crusty trim hoop for a 67-68 grille, let me know what you want for it. -Josh |

Here's how she looks in the engine compartment. I need a heater core box that isn't all eaten up like the one I have so I can atleast have defrost, but that's not a big deal at this time. I'm loving the stainless steel headers and the flowmaster exhaust.
The dash panel is currently ziptied to the harness running across the steering column, but I have a friend who does stereo installs and fiberglass work who said he'd help me get that squared away. And the last pic shows just how bare bones the truck is. No radio, no a/c, no carpet. Just bucket seats and a steering wheel. I love it. I want to go for another ride right now!! -Josh |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
More pics on how u got dash, cluster and steering column in!! Did u have to send ECM off to delete vats and all using the steering column and such??

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

As for the ECM, I didn't touch anything. The plan was to unplug everything, swap it over, and then plug it all back in, and that's what I did. I disabled the airbag system, and didn't use the ABS module. The airbag light and ABS light are on in the dash, but that's it. -Josh |

Really trying to figure out how to swap in the fuel tank from the 01 as well. So you didn't do a standalone setup, right? You swapped everything from the original fuse box to the newer one? That is what I am wanting to do! Sorry to threadjack I am just full of questions!! Thanks! |
Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside
I swapped the entire wiring harness from the van to my truck. I have the fuse panel under the hood, and the fuse panel in the cab. The van headlight and tail light harnesses, a/C and radio plugs, even the tow/haul button is mounted in the dash. I had a check engine light, but i fixed an exhaust leak at the header, and the light went out. I transferred the stock fuel pump into my tank behind the axle and extended the wiring and fuel lines. Even mounted the evap canister for the fuel system on the frame.

Stillt trying to see if I can find info on mounting the whole plastic fuel tank though. How did you swap in the stock fuel pump assy into your existing tank? Thats neat. |
