Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Pull the ignition coil to distributor wire, chain the hood shut with a padlock. Will crank but not fire. Can't easily pop the hood. This will stop someone who doesn't want it bad enough to diagnose.
As for the firearm a Kahr P9 with an extended clip guards mine :) |

Depends on where the truck is/I am.
If it's at my house, there's not too much activity...especially at night. If there were (meaning the BAD kind of activity ;)), the Weatherby Shorty 12 would do the job nicely. But, I don't want to shoot my truck. So, a combo of an electric fuel pump and this little gem, placed in a very strange place that no one except me knows, would likely save some scumbag a bunch of skin and bone. And, save me some body (!) and paint work. |

I like the idea of the 870 too, one of the serbu super shorties with a few slugs would do nicely:metal: Why not an ar pistol? I want to make a rack to go behind the seat that is hidden so I can stash a few guns and make it look like the gas tank, just in case. |

This guys a pretty good theft deterrent also. Not one bit aggressive unless someone is doing something bad then he lets them know he's not happy:lol:. Love when people faces get pale white when they say how sweet he is and ask what breed.

I have a kill switch the HEI. The old distributor just takes up space in a box.

Best theft deterrent ???
Zombie thread resurrection (spoiler)
This thread is a few years old, wanted to ask folks if they have anything new that works for them? The leading guidance on theft deterrent for a non computerized, non locking automatic with a non locking steering wheel seems to be: 1. Battery disconnect with hood lock 2. HEI disconnect switch, hidden as cigarette lighter or radio button 3. Fuel cut off switch 4. Rottweiler in the seat (or a variety of shooting iron) 5. Brake lock Please add yours! Looking to those that have tried a few methods, and have a favorite for a newbie like me! Thanks! |
Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Best thing is vigilance and common sense applied liberally. I have LEO friends that tell me, "...nothing good happens after 1:00 a.m."
Of course, they are speaking about "outside".:devil::devil::devil: So, my guess is that ANY vehicle, parked next to a downtown bar at 3:15 a.m., is at a higher risk for theft (or ???) than mine sitting i n the driveway, parked there 365. And almost ALWAYS there before dark. Having said that, I have a power cut off to the fuel pump. It'll never "tick" unless I tell it to. And the switch is in a very strange place. |

I've never done the "Drive away without the fob" yet because I'm not sure what kind of commotion it'd cause, but I -would- like to verify that it works right. If I leave the fob at home and drive the truck, do I get a text message before the police are notified? I really don't want to raise a false alarm! |
Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Great stuff, thanks guys! I often wondered if it wasn't better to go with a fast recovery (lojack) then stress about doing other things to the systems. I'm moving out to a pretty rural place, I wonder if the cops there have the tech for lojack? I'll have to find out.
No fuel pump on my 4 barrel carb set up. I do have an MSD box. I''ve been meaning to call the folks at MSD and ask them if there's a better way than putting a keyed (or fobbed remote switch) to the 6AL box....:confused: Are the remote/RFID switches any good? Anyone put one of those in? Thanks again! Nomad |
Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Dang, just checked lojack, and they don't cover anywhere in South Dakota. Ugh.

Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
I have a (manual) valve to switch between the three tanks. Put it in the wrong position, and it runs out of gas in mile or so. I know from personal experience after I installed a new valve and wasn't sure about which way the pointer went when using the main tank. Of course, that doesn't stop someone with a tow truck.

Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Nice, Steevee! I once flew with a guy who had the same thought. The silence was deafening.... lol.
I really like the idea behind coplock. It's giving me ideas for a locking arm for the parking brake, or maybe the main brakes.... A block that fits over or under the parking brake or main brakes, with what could be a hitch lock (bolt cutter proof) arrangement. Good luck getting that out! It would have to be small enough to stow under the seat, when not in use. Hmmm..... |
Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Theft deterrent? I drive a beat to Hell truck- best deterrent there is. LOL

Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
I just make sure my insurance premiums are paid. It's no deterrent but gives me great peace of mind.
My wife bought The Club for me when I was shopping insurance! In the future I may install a switch to cut off one or all of: fuel pump, injection system, ECU, MSD 6A, etc. -klb |
Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
Dogs. big loud angry dogs. most of my rigs are behind locked gate and with true guard dogs, But also I park my daily driven vehicles 50 or 60 feet off of the main road, so you REALLY gotta be lost to be sniffing around my rigs.

Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
I know this is an old thread, but one of the best theft deterrents is a clutch. probably 90% of the idiots trying to steal something can't drive a stick shift.

Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
So, to all you guys posting pics of guns & dogs:
When your truck is at the store, or a hotel, or anywhere other than home.... how does y'alls "theft deterrent" work? You leave the dog in the truck overnight? Set the gun on the dash? I'm just not seeing how the "deterrent" part works anywhere you're not at. Pretty sure the point of this post wasn't about guns or guard dogs. LOL |
Re: What's your best theft deterrent ???
On a (semi) serious note, I've toyed with one idea, should a thief get one of our trucks started at say, the movies, or a hotel, or wherever it's been unattended.
I have thought many times one of the best things to do is have a wire running from the coil to the seat frame. Bet they'd get out. |
