Sorry for the late posting. Here is my '62. I got it last October and it finally hit the street on March 2nd. This '62 is now my daily driver.

Now that's a nice one! Like the original colors. And hubcaps to boot!

62Short Step. Did you get a repro plate or did it come that way. If you got the repo plate were you able to get the 62 on the date in the right corner? Very cool truck!!!

Re: Roll call... 1962's!

The plate is a real '56 with a '62 tag. The truck is registered with that plate under the California YOM program. The plate was added recently.

Re: Roll call... 1962's!

The orig owner of my truck changed the plate out in 64 for what reason we don't know. I was told he was thinking about changing the hood at the same time so he could update the truck and make it look like a newer model. Maybe it was easier to get the plate than to spend the 25 bucks for a hood and have it painted. I looked into getting the repro plate but at 100 bucks a pop and the potential problem with the DMV I decided not to do anything yet. Maybe I'll see if I can find some plates later.

Re: Roll call... 1962's!

Good thing you didn't go with the repop...DMV would have never gone for that (I've done this YOM thing several times).

If your truck is a '61, you must have a pair of matching '56 commercial plates and one 61 sticker. Plates must be legible and in good shape, mint or restored is not required.

'56 plates with a '62 sticker are fairly easy to find because they changed to black plates in '63. All the 56/62's were tossed or hung on the wall.

56 plates with 61 stickers are tough because the 61 stickers were peeled off to make room for the 62 stickers. Only a small group of plates were actually retired in 61.

If you can get a 61 sticker, and a pair of 56 plates (with or without stickers of any year), then you can pull this off.

My commercial plates begins with 'Y'. The letter 'Y' is late in the alphabet and would have been issued late in the 1956 plate series (like around 1962;)). You don't have to be as anal as me about the plate number...any 56 plate will do.

Re: Roll call... 1962's!

No, I am as anal as you. I would look for the number that is period correct for my year. That's why I was looking toward the repro plates as an easy way out. But nothing is easy. I'll look at pamona and around to see if I can find something. Since I'm going to be as factory as I can I'll take some time to see what I can find out. It's little things like plates, hub caps, knobs and levers that make a difference.

Re: Roll call... 1962's!

ebay usually has '56 plates.

This will search all craigslists (searches by ad content, not title). Type your key words into the Google search box and add this exactly as shown here:
site:craigslist.org

I would try the professional plate dealers/collectors for the 61 sticker.

Good luck.

Re: Roll call... 1962's!

The other site for craigslist is craiglook.com. It has pretty much the same search, nation wide, or x number of miles from your zip.

I never tried craiglook.com...interesting.

Let's give it a shot here...

I'm pretty excited, the body frame & suspension on this truck are excellent,my auto body guy says there's zero glass or bondo on the body.
Mechanically speaking though,it's a mess! I'm going to start working on it this weekend just to get it running right & figure out why there's nobody home when in park...Then it's going in for a cab/bed off restore.

Consider yourself fortunate. Mechanical stuff is cheap and easy compared to body and rust repair. As these trucks get older it is harder and harder to find one with a nice body unless it's already been restored and costs a fortune.

She runs!
Finally got it running this weekend, noticed while giving it a tune-up that the harmonic balancer is barely hitting the center link...the po made a half-a**ed attempt to shim up one side of the motor w/ 7/16 nuts under one motormount...unbelievable.
It's going in the body shop next week, power brakes, paint the engine/engine bay, fresh wiring,exhaust...then body work.
