Mike can probably explain the actual color better than I, however, I think the picture on the right (with door handle) is a bit more accurate. I'm going back with the original factory color which is 04514AA Red. Even though it says Red, it's always looked more orange to me. The picture on the left had quite a bit of fluorescent light reflection in it, which I think makes it look a bit more red. If you look at some of the earlier pics in the thread (page 1) you can see the original color.

Cool! I like the color in the door handle pic the best! Hahaha

My 72 says orange red or red orange on the glove box door. I want it to be "competition orange" if I ever get to paint it. (With white deck stripes like the old Camaros and Chevelles)

Mike, how long does it take to learn to lay paint down like that? Smooth!

That sounds pretty cool. Would you have the stripes ride up/over the roof, down the back of the cab, along the bed and then up/over/down the tailgate or just on the hood?

Well, I dunno for sure about that.
I like the idea of the continual stripes on the roof, along the bed and down the tailgate, but I don't know if I'd like the looks of it. Might be "too much" I guess is what I'm thinkin.

The stripes inside the bed will probably not happen either way because the truck will always be used, and even the tailgate will be a problem, (airgate). But I think I'd still like to continue them on the gate somehow. Alot of taping! LOL

I've even considered the idea of body colored bumpers with the stripes on them, but again, undecided. Chrome bumpers would be cool but probably cost a fortune since my bumpers are 4x6 tubing.... $$!!! Hahaha

Keep up the good work Mike!

Gonna be a sweet truck Lafayette 68K20!

Paint just don't lay down that smooth on the sides without color sanding and buffing. I have been painting for at least 15 years restoring antique aircraft but only the last couple years been doing higher end automotive paint jobs. Not difficult to do if you can yield a paint gun, it is 95% prep, 5% actual painting.

Another small update: Front and rear glass was installed Monday, but I am going to have to redo the windshield since the junk repop CST trim is holding the rubber off the glass in a couple spots and not letting it seal properly. Off to find a good set of deep trim....

I have some SS trim but not sure how well it would ship...

Well hell, I got the 5% down pat then!
A friend of mine has a bodyshop. I'm gonna go watch him paint someday when I get a chance. I have painted a car and a truck a few years ago that didn't turn out to bad for what I was workin with. (Cheap paint, no knowledge, and borrowed shop/gun...)

I'll quit interrupting with my fantasies now. On with the build! ;)

Sorry I have dropped the ball in updating this thread the last few weeks. Here are some recent pics and final assembly has already begun. Bedliner shot, and all the sheetmetal is in color. Look for more pics in the coming days as we start to wrap this project up.

tintable Raptor. Same thing used on bottom of truck. Not real thick, but very tough. Not sure how durable until Richard can bring himself to use it.

I get it from my local auto paint store supplier. I like it better than SEM, don't like Shutz at all.

EDIT: didn't notice you were in Norman. Go to B&H

I found it for $99 in a kit... I like that it comes in four bottles so you only need to mix a small amount and don't wast an entire gallon.

That is what I pay for it but with tintable you need to go to your local paint store to get what ever color you want to tint it with. Make sure you tell them for bedliner kit so they sell you pigment only no binders. If black, just mix and shoot. Don't forget the shutz gun to shoot it if you don't have one, They are cheap.

is the shutz gun better than the one that comes in the kit?

Musclerodz 02-11-2009 01:56 PM

Re: New Project at Musclerodz - '68 K20

I don't think the kit comes with a gun at B&H, they are like $10. They gave me one with the first kit I got, but I buy thousands of dollars of product every year as well. I have not got a gun with the other 6-7 kits I have bought.
