you just have to cut out the splines a bit so that the disc can go back, 4 1/2" angle grinder gently to clear excess then clean up with a file. you do not have to go that far. cut the retainer shaft to the same length as the original one.
it will be a lot more work to make that adaptor plate. remember on that plate that it has to be machined to fit the hole in the b/housing and the the input brg collar has fit the adaptor so that means machining a place for it corresponding to the other machined part on the frt side so everything lines up properly
you may have to also grind a little off the end of the splined hub of the clutch disc. none of this is complicated

My bellhousing might be a bit shallower than others, I'm not sure but I'm running a 460486 bellhousing. It came with the setup so that's the main reason I'm using it. The pilot tip should have good engagement still in the pilot bushing. It may not be ideal but it should still have enough engagement to be ok.

On the machined hole to fit the bearing retainer, my bellhousing has a way bigger hole than what the flange of the retainer is. I can't see it causing issues but then again I'm new to this part. What do you think?

it will have the same effect as having no pilot bushing. nothing to align it. the clutch disc has to remain centred if not it will be out of balance. how long do you think the trans input brg will last and the trans.. sounds like you have a later truck b/housing that took a sm465 trans which had a larger in dia pilot brg retainer. you need a machine shop make an adaptor between the frt brg retainer and the b/housing or get an earlier b/housing or one from a car that has the same size. there is no difference in depth of b/housings. there are numerous articles on this t5 swap online. perhaps google it and do a bit of research for yourself before you assume everything

Alright, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to have my buddy cut out a spacer on his plasma table and space both the transmission and the bearing retainer the same amount and then install the bushing ring from Novak to get the bearing retainer to fit proper in the bellhousing.

This should get me everything I need and have it all work like it's supposed to.

scoot_mcgrute, I think these two posts are your best advice. I'm not sure which T5 you're running, but if it's an S10 model the Jeep input shaft swap is easy, and no spacer required. They can be purchased from Summit for less than $90.

Thanks for the link. I'll be using a 3/16" spacer so nothing too thick. I'll have to shorten the driveline but it was already a little long anyway so that will be fine and then my crossmember will have to be modified as well. No biggie, this is all in my wheelhouse of skills :chevy:

It's just super hard for me to spend a whole bunch of time, 3 weeks on the tranny so far, and money of a setup that ultimately will only be in the truck a year. I'm already saving for an LS and a T56 :metal:

Alrighty, got started on the bellhousing spacers last night. My buddy has a Torchmate table in his garage which is super nice to have access to. A little clean up work and turning the OD of the spacer for the retainer down and I should have a neat little setup.

I was contemplating swapping the input shaft to the Jeep unit but decided to go this route to get it on the road a little quicker. I'll have this thing licked sooner or later!

Cleaned up the spacers on lunch yesterday and got the ring for the bearing retainer turned down to the right diameter. Fit it up when I got home and it all fit :metal:

The motor and tranny came with another bearing retainer that was in bad shape and I wasn't going to use. I bolted the ring to the retainer and put the snout in the lathe. Worked great!

Test fit everything just to make sure it all fit.

Also, my buddy needed a new coolant bypass plug made so I played around and made this. Turned out killer!

Tonight, I'm going to help my buddy with the brakes on his truck so he can hit up a track night on Friday. I'll see about stabbing the tranny back in my truck Friday night or Saturday.

Nice work Scott, you'll be an expert at removing and installing tranny's by the time you're done

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

A few more times of installing and removing the tranny and I have a setup that works! The spacer worked perfect and all the parts worked together like they were supposed to. So happy to be able to move on and re-start the assembly process!

Between tinkering on the truck this weekend, I had a little "Scoot time" and walked down to the park for the Hot Air Balloon Festival Saturday night and did some rock therapy in the Jeep on Sunday. It was a great weekend!

There were supposed to be 8 or so balloons all lit up but I guess there was too much wind so only one was brave enough. It was pretty cool to see the process to get it all setup and ready to fly though.

This is what my Jeep is built for, it still blows my mind on how capable it is for in my mind a fairly stock looking rig. Yes, I do enjoy my toys :metal:
https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7691/2...7d42d0e1_b.jpg

A little paint transfer from a tree that someone else rubbed against. The Jeep is almost strictly a wheeler so I don't worry about the body so much
https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7578/2...398d248c_b.jpg

I painted the bed strips body color a while back and last night rounded up all the strip hardware and gave them a coat of body color also. I think it'll look good and finish off the bed a bit.
https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7326/2...f90aacb8_b.jpg

More to come this week. If everything goes right, I should have the bed back on the truck and the driveline sent out to get shortened due to my spacer.

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Tinkered with it last night, I gotta say that messing with the tranny for so long killed the motivation levels a bit. I wasn't sure what I would need to do to the tranny crossmember to get it bolted back up and all it needed was opening the holes on the frame attachment side. Easy!

The shifter was a bit of a reach into 3rd and 5th was way out there so I cut a couple slices at the base of the lever and pulled it over to close the slices. Worked well and is much much better!

1st gear
https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7536/2...b0c5acc6_b.jpg

5th gear. It's about where 3rd used to be, can't get much better than that!
https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7371/2...bcf9e148_b.jpg

Here you can see the bend that I put in it
https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7356/2...9821bd6e_b.jpg

And just because the chrome looked out of place, I painted it black. It should look way better now!
https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7388/2...1eff49bf_b.jpg

Here's a shot of what the bed will look like. I painted the strips and the hardware body color with a semi-gloss sealer on the oak. It's going to look great.

Got the bed on the truck this weekend and my buddy started fixing the bad fender. He will also be shooting them for me, I can't wait to see them on the truck!

The front panel was pretty messed up and wouldn't allow me to put the bed wood in. No matter what I tried, it just wasn't going to be fixed while it was still bolted to the bed so I took it off and actually lightly stomped it flat. Worked great!
https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7417/2...9e0708e1_b.jpg

I didn't get an after shot since the wood fit. I started putting the wood in and then my dad and friend stopped by so we put the bed on the truck. Progress!

Just for fun, we held a fender up :metal:
https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7397/2...5978a689_b.jpg

My buddy was working on my passenger fender on Sunday, the rust was so bad that he used the whole patch panel. I learned a bunch watching him work and even though we have never done this before, it's turning out great.

The bed is back on and the wood is all tight. Dad helped me get the front clip in the garage so I can start cleaning that up and repainted. It'd be cool to put that back on next weekend!

Well, the plan was to clean the inner fenders and core support up and paint it. Not pull it all apart . I'll be able to get a better job done now so it's worth it! I'll more than likely do a little rust repair before I put it all back together, just some minor things. Under the battery looked amazing which was awesome to see!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Got a bunch done on the front clip this weekend! My buddy finished up the other fender and even found time on Saturday to shoot both of them for me. I wasn't expecting that! When I got home from his house, I tore into the inner fenders and started the rust repair. It took a while but I got both done between Saturday afternoon and yesterday. Squirted some paint on them and the core support last night and maybe get to installing them tonight if the weather holds out. I'm also hoping to get it into the exhaust shop on Saturday as well. It's coming right along!

52 years of dirt and rust in here
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8416/2...e3791147_b.jpg

Patch all welded and sanded smooth, didn't take too much filler on this one
https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8569/2...d0e8616e_b.jpg

Paint! We have our work cut out for us to make the truck look as good as it can to match the fenders as much as possible before we degrade the finish of the fenders to match the rest of the truck

Driver inner fender had a bunch of rust
[url=https://flic.kr/p/KfDz2V]https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8791/2...d9de332f_b.jpg

Patch all welded in
https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8726/2...34c5a769_b.jpg

I also had to rebuild the braces for both sides as well. They aren't perfect but nobody will see them so they are perfect for the truck!
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8703/2...99b65867_b.jpg

Passenger side had some as well, it went a little quicker than the driver's side because I had a plan and jumped right in
https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8721/2...03e1be67_b.jpg

Patch all welded in and primed
https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7601/2...429ec791_b.jpg

Just for fun, I set the core support on the frame to check a couple things. Fresh paint makes everything look great!
https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8738/2...d1aeb873_b.jpg

That's all I've got for now.

Thanks man! I'm finished with the rust repair, for now anyway. What's left will be fixed after a while. I need to enjoy it for a while first :metal:

It was supposed to rain all day yesterday but it didn't rain a drop so I got busy getting the front clip put back together when I got home last night. Sent a picture to my buddy and he came by to buff some of the paint out and to start getting the new fenders to match the truck. I'm so ecstatic on how this is turning out, just a little time with the buffer and the paint will look amazing again!

Inner fenders are on, I had to trim the driver's side a bit to clear my new steering shaft for the rack so there was a bit of on and off cycles but it wasn't terrible.
https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8673/2...a20398ca_b.jpg

Next was the core support, went on nice and easy
https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8419/2...e15ffae0_b.jpg

My buddy stopped by to start making the fenders match the truck and got the passenger side of the cab buffed out. I'm getting excited to drive this thing again!
https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8108/2...230f67a6_b.jpg

https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8896/2...3cc97f0e_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8596/2...203e2778_b.jpg

The fenders are a bit cloudy so we're going to let the paint cure for a while longer and see if we can get the color to match a bit better. Not a horrible match in my opinion though!
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8832/2...f872f430_b.jpg

Going to call and set the exhaust appointment up today for hopefully Saturday. I gotta get a couple things ready before hand but I can do it!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

It'll go in for exhaust on Saturday, I'm going to do 2" with a quiet muffler and dump in front of the driver rear tire. Can't wait! :metal:
