Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Got the top sprayed Classic White today. Was 72* what a perfect day it was for painting. Unbelievable in the middle of January.
Not bad for someone who has no idea what he is doing. I did get some runs on the back so I will have to sand those out and shoot the back again. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7521/...459245c4_b.jpg20150118_153353 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8612/...7a838eb6_b.jpg20150118_153316 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7541/...d0c03203_b.jpg20150118_153301 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7526/...eb0b0020_b.jpg20150118_153254 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7508/...1e91ed24_b.jpg20150118_153245 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7510/...c3657ab5_b.jpg20150118_153323 by bjohnson388, on Flickr |

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Looking great from here Bret !!
Good spray day has to be even better, getting it mid January. The runs on the back of my cab looks like a shower door glass after a good shower, the rest of the truck is equally bad, so I know there is a load of prep ahead. Your progress, despite a few setbacks, has been great, no doubt aided by your actual aspirations for doing the truck justice. Well done so far mate. |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Progress! Looks good. I can't wait to start on my '68 GMC. I need to finish my new pole barn first. Today and yesterday is the first time in a couple weeks it's been above freezing or the teens for that matter. Keep up the good work.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
i sure hope you'll be nice to that beautiful green and polished aluminum motor you're working on... it looked to me like you thrashed your other motor builds until parts were sticking out all over the place.
be nice to this one, its too pretty to blowup. closing in on break in time... |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I haven't heard of using the razor blade on primer and paint. I have heard about using it on clear though. Not saying it wouldn't work, not to mention primer isn't that hard to sand. Just don't sand THAT part alone as you'll put a dip in the primer that you'll see later. (I don't know what you know and don't know when it comes to painting) Sorry if that sounded a$$ish
|
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I found it on different sites using it on solid color and clear. The reason I wanted to try it is so I don't sand down to the primer. If I can just knock down the runs and then scuff the white then I will just reshoot it without having to primer again.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I stopped by the garage on the way home from work to see how the paint dried. I was very disgusted/disappointed/depressed over how it came out when I left Sunday. Well seeing it today dried I feel much better. The sections where the paint came out smooth have an awesome satin eggshell sheen. The front pillars and inside the door jams look great and the front eyebrow.
The back does have a million drips I will have to cut and respray. The top I am torn on. It is very smooth around the edges but out in the center it has bad orange peel. Too bad its the Satin paint if it was gloss I am sure I could cut it and buff it out. Not sure yet if I will respray it. I have enough paint left to spray the back so I will focus on that first. Just hate having to do things twice after all that prep work, but that's what comes from being a rookie painter. |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Just adds to the fun… being a rookie that is...:mm: I'm dealing with lots rookie things at my end…:waah:

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I sanded all the runs out on the back of the cab. Today was a beautiful 72*. Perfect day for painting. Masked off the back on the side of the sail panels and shot some paint on. It came out great this time. 2nd times the charm.
I am very impressed with the fine line tape I bought. I only had one little place on the front driver A pillar mess up. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7455/...18bf3bd9_b.jpg20150129_131853 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7361/...53019b2f_b.jpg20150129_131858 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7327/...48c2e076_b.jpg20150129_131904 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7376/...80daa873_b.jpg20150129_131912 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7453/...b2fe8581_b.jpg20150129_132035 by bjohnson388, on Flickr This paint has a very unigue texture when it dries. At first I thought the roof had orange peeled. But I think it is just the way the paint dries. Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Nice! I got the same way when I painted. I feel like I need to hurry before the paint dries in the gun or something. I know it won't but like you said just work on the technique. Keep up the progress. Looks great. Best of all your learning from the mistakes. There are a lot of people that don't have the ability to. They put the blame on other things.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Had another really nice 70* day today. Was warm enough I was able spread some filler on the back of the cab and finish up all the bodywork. I spent quite a bit of time on the outside back corners of the cab as this is all visible on a stepside. Both sides had their share of dings and I hammered and dollied as much as I could. Used the new Rage Gold filler I got for Xmas. This stuff is awesome lays down real smooth like peanut butter and has virtually no pinholes and sands real easy. The weather started to chill in the afternoon so I was not able to shoot primer. Couple of coats of filler primer and some blocking and the cab is ready for some Midnight Blue!

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Funny how these build threads are like a drug.
I am sitting having a quick coffee in a hospital before getting out to go hunting again and checked in. That filler sounds like a rather good investment. Progress is Progress. |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I agree Rian. I read people's build threads before I go to work in the morning and usually read them when I get home.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Stripped my passenger door yesterday. Found some stuff I really didn't want to but that's how these old trucks are. Surprises around every corner. The front corner is rotten. That is a relatively easy fix. It appears the door check broke at one time and the door was allowed to swing to far and crease the door. The body man that fixed pulled some of the dent and then filled over with a 1/4" bondo. I swear I ground at least a quart of bondo off this door.
So I will have to cutout the two creases and weld in some new metal. There is also a crease running down the bottom middle of the top curve part. Not sure I can really do anything with this and it is not that deep so will probably just fill over it. Does any of this look familiar Rian? https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8639/...92f99ff7_b.jpg20150207_113752 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7415/...3884e8b1_b.jpg20150207_113741 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7307/...7dddda3b_b.jpg20150207_113746 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7334/...afc336d0_b.jpg20150207_113757 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Looks like an ANGRY BADGER was riding shot gun and beat the hell out of the bottom of the door. I am really curious how this even happened as the original rocker had no damage in this area? Was going to bang this out from the inside since there is a speaker hole but there is another panel behind it so no access. Probably just cut it out at the edge and then hammer the edge square and weld in a new piece. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7454/...c6f406ed_b.jpg20150207_125046 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Also the door check area is beat up as well. Must have been a violent wind whipped the door or something who knows! https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7451/...c01e2014_b.jpg20150207_125100 by bjohnson388, on Flickr |

You can look at THIS page about newer door checks.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
What have you decided about the doors, are you going to re-skin them up to the window frame?
|
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
My current plan is to make some wooden pucks that match the profile of the two outer areas I need patches for. Make some patches and then trace them out over the damaged area cut out and weld in the patches. I don't really want to replace the whole door skin. I found a tool online that I might be able to use to push the crease out from the inside.
