Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Had to smile when I saw your new ride. Had the same truck once, also a big block automatic. Couple things I remember well about that truck: Top out at about 55 mph, between 6 to 9 miles per gallon, and the worst riding truck I have ever owned ( exception : 2000 pounds or more on the flatbed and she rode like a dream :) certainly the coolest looking old hauler i’ve ever had. I like to look at it a lot more than actually driving it.
Anyway, back to your question, unless you were going wild with a LS swap, axle change etc etc. keep it simple and easy :Keep it stock and make it run well and reliable for a back up truck. Make it as pretty as possible in its original state, maybe even letter it to match your business and use it as a calling card out front......... Steve weim55 Colorado |
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Period correct accessories are needed.
Grill guard, CB, hat holder, vent shades, wheel spinner, saddle blanket seat cover, a sliding rear window, and mud flaps. Or, add a screen to the flat bed and could turn that into a rolling drive-in theater as a side business. |
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
I'm quite sure that was a craigslist score off a ranch near Healdsburg I think? What's the rear axle ratio, 4.10 with an auto I'm guessing.

Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
I agree with most here. Clean it up, tune it up, repair what needs repairing and drive it.
|
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Put gas in it and drive the wheels off of it.

Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Push bumper, tire rack, and Chevyland race team lettering WITH sponsors...!

I too saw it a while back When you brought it up on the cl thread again I figured, what the heck, it’s only 15 minutes away Went and met the cowboy who was selling it It was a bit rougher than I had hoped for And I really don’t buy trucks without spid But, it was an original BB automatic So I offered less than half the asking price That didn’t work, And he showed me the gate I just came in After mentioning he also was restoring A SWB Cheyenne Super I didn’t even drive the truck But I always save phone #s A few days later I shot him a text showing him the tailgate handle Chrome trim, only Supers had He asked if I might want to trade some parts Along with $ for the flatbed We ended up talking again, and both got to our Happy spot Set up a time so I could go drive it Smelled like cow or horse dung in the cab Not really sure which But, I’ve always liked flatbeds And it just drove tight, was fast , loud And as bumpy as all the rest of them |

Boog’s comment on the ‘ hearding turds ‘ thread
When I brought it home About clean slate Was kind of why I ended up buying it For all these years, I am always looking for Documented trucks with spids (Which isn’t as easy anymore) Then putting them back together that way Maybe it’s time for a change ?? For some reason, I’ve always wanted a lowered Flatbed dually Like the one below (I just like the look) But the comments above might make me rethink Probably why I started the thread in the first place |
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
I’d love to own the truck you just bought.
Lowering it would be what I would do. Congrats! |

I kind a like them myself. Drive it as is. Mine definitely ride better with a load but none of mine are crazy stiff. Maybe it’s because they are all 157” wheelbase.

The 157”s definitely rode smoother I had this 157 that was extended An additional foot for a motorhome Then, converted to a flatbed I think the bed was 13’ long Drove like a caddy |

White. Definitely the white one. I thought about the gun rack but it seems this is more a work truck so held back. I’m pro gun rack.

Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Just a neat chore boy to bop around in. As far as the trend of pulling a truck for sale then relisting for more goes, that is exactly what I did when selling the '71 custom/30 wrecker I had. It had nothing to do with Barrett-Jackson or anybody telling me it was worth more. I would list it and only get lowball offers with no one actually coming to look. I got tired of saying, "Come take a look at the truck, then tell me why you think it's not worth my asking price". I decided it was listed so low it was attracting flippers who will always try for less even if asking price is stupid low. The nature of that beast is create the largest gap between purchase price and resell price with nothing else considered, just make money. I was listing at a priced to sell amount because I don't play games, just wanted it gone before I decided to keep it. So I listed it at 30% more and it sold in a day to someone a couple states away

Clean it up and use it. I made my 64' cattle truck a flatbed, 12' bed, rides like a Cadillac. Cow and horse **** falls off of it when working on it, when it get wet, it smell like cow piss.

My 71 with a 12' bed and now with its 10" bed.
445s will fit under that bed with room to spare and possibly remove the block and a leaf or two as well. |

Clean slate there to do whatever you want to. The old cowboy could use a drink of water and maybe a bath. I sure do miss the 133" dually I had.

Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Harrison, AR dealer bumper, ey? A certain member comes to mind. I love those western state pride mudflaps. I've used them for floor mats.
I like this one as it is, relatively unmolested. It's cool looking aged and would be a really nice one to make it a freshy fresh brochure picture truck. People would see a neat truck and if those who know the trucks got a peak under the hood they would be awed. |
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Eric, knowing how you like 'em all stock it's good to see you willing to consider changing this one up. I like short flatbeds. Longer wheel base vehicles most always do ride better though.
It reminds me of the 72 wrecker my dad had. It was 3/4 ton on coil springs. We weren't commercial towing. It was our body shop wrecker. Flatbed with winch down in front of the bed and a removable stinger and cradle. It was made to tow vehicles or haul on the bed just by lifting the stinger out. It wasn't commercial built. It was all flat sheet steel floor and sides all around with the matching white/red/white/red paint as the cab. 454/T400 trans. Narrow Michelin tires and that truck rode real nice. Ideas: Lower a couple of inches. Shine it up a bit. No chrome simulators, just nice white wheels. Wooden stake sides, and/or, make an atv hauler out of it. Pair of ramps to load 2 atvs, one from each side + pull an atv or bike trailer with it for those outings. Mount tool boxes, fuel tank, vice, etc for a welder's type utility setup. Mobile tech rig sort of. Goose neck hitch to pull a lowboy trailer to haul all sorts of things. Landscaping, lawn care equipment, Christmas trees? Fire wood and water on the bed with a mobile BBQ trailer setup. Eating's always good. ;) Maybe lose the flatbed and do a custom fleetside dually? |
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
Well.....coming from a fellow truck enthusiast, that's quite the conundrum & you could easily find yourself confused & frustrated by all of the different directions you could take with your truck.....because I care about your stress level, I'd give it to me to lessen the burden:metal:

I just SEM painted it black Have this saddle blanket cover also Like Pete suggested I’ll see which looks best I wouldn’t have bought the truck if it wasn’t BB / Automatic You do see them in c30’s but usually motor homes Seems like the original cab and chassis’s Were usually 350 4spd, probably destined to be a work truck Most likely why they are usually beat It has its heat shield on the firewall Looks like the engine has been rebuilt Block, decked and hard to make out the stamp on front pad Motor also feel like it’s been built Not even tuned up it will burn rubber on the Dualls I think it is possible that it is the original one Looks like the last digit is X And one before it might have been a K TKX De coded- 72 402 Truck 210hp turbo 400 c30 |
Re: 72 - C30 - clean slate
The more pic's you put up the better I like this truck! And yes by far most were bolt action tranny's and beat to hell after all these years. I'm thinking you got a hell of a deal.
Have you figured out the rear gear ratio yet? |
