New Guy, Old Suburban
Hi all, been reading awhile but this is my first post. A few months ago my Dad said he wanted me to have his 71 Suburban, it has been in the family since he bought it in 72. Lot's of great memories ride with this Suburban, I got my DL in 75 it was the party wagon back then!
It's been parked for at least 10 years now, but my Dad made sure to start it up at least once a year. I live in Vegas, I headed up to So. Utah this Saturday morning to get it running, load it up and haul it back, just got back this afternoon! Put a couple gallons of fresh gas in with the old, charged the battery and she started right up:chevy: Needs quite a bit of work but is in great shape considering. It originally came with a big block 400 but Dad and I built and swapped in a 454 14 years ago, it might have 10k on it. BTW still have the original 400 stored in the barn. Here are some pictures I took with my phone today, forgot to take some of the interior, I'll add them tomorrow. http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...430_134943.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...501_115552.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...501_132759.jpg |

Welcome, and awesome to see you are saving the family burb!
Mine has a similar story as well, and the longer I keep it the more I realize I made the right decision to keep and restore her. |

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
What great memories! I wish I still had my folks '71 Blazer that I learned to drive in. What a stupid teenager I was.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
She is straight, the rear right back panel was dented in by a horse once, but popped back out. There are a few small dents, the front bumper is not even, but undamaged and no RUST.
It lived here in Vegas most of it's life, moved up the S. Utah about 10 years ago, been in a dry climate it's whole life. |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Took pictures of the interior today after work.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Thanks all!
Thats good to know Rich, nice to meet you. Dang Pack Rat's After work yesterday I finally got started on cleaning up the Burb. Thought I would start in the engine compartment, then interior, did not make it to the interior, getting the pack rat nests out of the front of the fenders was a nightmare! Need to repair and clean up the wiring, new plug wires/plugs, fuel filter and rebuild the carb. It's running pretty good though, took it around the block which was great, have not drove it since the 70's http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9583.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9585.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9589.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9588.jpg |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Looks fantastic!! Nice job!!
|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban

Looking nice and clean now. |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban

|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban

Where in Vegas? Im up NW off Cheyenne at the 215. |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
I'm South, pretty close to the Bass Pro, opposite end of town wouldn't you know!
Got the inside cleaned up this morning and it looks good too! If I find the get up and go, I'll start on the exterior once the sun gets down a bit further. |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
My Dad could not find the title to the Suburban, thought we were going to have to do a title search. While cleaning the interior, under the drivers seat, guess what I found! Just need to get back up to Utah or mail it then I can drive it legally anyways:sexy:
The major cleaning is done, thank goodness I would much prefer turning wrenches! http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9597.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9600.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9601.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/IMG_9604.jpg |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
what's the gauge under the dash? A tach?
|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
The temp gauge quite working so.....
It's on my list. The tack does not work either. Electrical repairs start tomorrow. |
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
that truck is too clean to take apart/mod. i'd say just do the needed touch ups and drive the thing! i'm diggin' that funky vintage paint job!
|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Thanks capev86, my thoughts exactly!
I got the electrical manageable , all gauges are working except the temp, just have not got to it since the aftermarket one is working. I got a temporary registration, been getting it ready to be smoged, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, oil, filter, fuel filter and rebuilt the carb, all today. I'm beat but she is running like a scalded ape, smog should be a snap! |

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Yep.... Crazy Nevada smog laws. I just had to smog my '68 a few weeks ago.
|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
I think 1967 is the cut off year. Just a way for DMV to make money it has to be done every fricken year. Whats worse about five years ago Diesels had to start being smoged, in order to smog a diesel you have to find a testing facility with a dyno.
|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
We have to smog test 1975 and later cars, but it's all done by state owned facilities, no private checks. Every 2 yrs, and it's not a problem for newer cars most the time. Fortunately my wife has the only newer car. My 3 cars are 1946, 1969, and 1971, so I don't do it at all.
|
Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Failed smog today, carburetor a little rich...what a pain.
I'll try leaning it down and see what happens, luckily I have a pretty good assortment of metering rod and jets! |
