Project: Turbo 250

So here it is my first build thread.... So day 1 stats
2 Guys
8 hours
1 '67 Chevy C10
8 Beers
2lbs Venison Steaks
2- 20" Sub Sandwiches
The truck is down to a rolling chassis.... The cab is in the upstairs garage and the rolling chassis is back down in the downstairs shop. I cant express how nice it is to buy a one owner truck that never seen salt and was garage kept.... It is definitely worth paying a few extra dollars for especially when all of the bolts come right out with out busted knuckles all of them except the coil spring bolts in the rear so we just cut out the springs instead. I only get one day per week to work on this so it will be once a week that I post updates and photos. Plans for Day 2 include pulling the engine and trans and power-washing the entire thing so that it is grease free for when I sand blast which is the plan for Day 3.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

4 corner disc brakes, self leveling air ride all 4 corners 2" drop spindles up front to compensate for the larger tire size,12 bolt 3.07 Rearend with Richmond Gears and Richmond's Powertrax unit, 20 gallon RCI Aluminum Fuel Cell in the rear. B&W 5th wheel plate, and 2" receiver out back. New Process 435 transmission with twin disc clutch. Engine: MSD Digital 6 Plus ignition, MSD BTM, HEI Distributor, Clifford Intake, Holley 4776 600cfm double pumper carb, SPA turbo Manifold, Machining the head to accept 1.86 Valves, Lump Kit, New COMP cams custom ground turbo cam calculated by Tom Lowe. Methanol Injection, Tial wastegate, New 3" into 2.25" exhaust, NOS 75HP shot spray bar (Prolly never going to use it, but I have an extra laying around with a couple extra tanks laying around), this truck will be my daily driver in the summer. I dont plan on doing the body work until I finish physical therapy school, but ya never know I might get a bug up my butt and decided to dive in and get it done....

A 5th wheel plate? What kind of trailer you gonna pull?

longbed67 09-24-2011 11:55 AM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

OJ 1988- I plan on eventually pulling a Cattle trailer occasionally...I dont plan on pulling more than 10000 lbs (trailer wt+cargo) It will just be nice to have a truck with a plate.

Was that the factory color? If so what was it called?

longbed67 09-24-2011 04:11 PM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

According to the Window Sticker it is Vermillion Metallic-Paint code 515 and the interior is Fawn- Paint Code 600. My sister likes the color... Personally I dont care for it.

I've thought about doing a turbo 6 for a while now. Glad to see someone doing it. We'll just keep calling it Becky.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

I need to take the time to lay out all the parts and take a couple of photos... Tom Lowe who lives an hour and a half west of me has been of great help so far in the process of making sure I am doing the right things/getting the right parts with the turbo build and he is doing the machining on my head and crankshaft as soon as I get it out.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

So here is my predicament I just degreased and powerwashed my framerail today and turns out what I thought was surface rust was just grime and 85% of the rail is still covered in the factory paint. The other 15% not covered I either power-washed off when I got to close or is light surface rust and could be hand-sanded off. SO.... I already own the equipment and material to sandblast the entire frame and I already have POR-15, Do I take the time and blast the frame and take off the factory paint and start from bare metal and then POR-15 it, or do I just sand the factory paint to scuff it up and sand off any of the remaining rust and POR 15 the frame? Any thoughts or other ideas. On a side note it is not in my budget to pay someone to powder coat the frame as nice as that would look...

FRENCHBLUE72 09-26-2011 08:10 PM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

Scuff the frame and then do the por...15

Re: Project: Turbo 250

Looks like I will be pulling the motor and trans and all the lines off on thursday night and Blasting on Friday! Which leaves Sat to Paint! Found out from POR- that it will not properly stick to the other paint, and as long as I use the metal ready (phosphoric acid) it will bond nicely to the bare metal.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

Took my head and crank over to Tom Lowe today to get machined... and taking the block in to a local shop on mon. Hopefully this motor can be back together before November. The blasting and painting didnt happen this weekend as planned because the professors laid the homework on thick but oh well there is always another weekend.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

Finally figured out what individual parts I need to build my own brake kits so I dont have to pay for someone else to do the research and put a kit together for me! All said and done...including McGaughy's drop spindles and shipping I have a complete front and rear set up with cross drilled and slotted rotors semi metallic pads D52 front calipers, eldorado rear calipers (I need the e-brake), All the lines cables bearings ect... Everything should be in next week I cant wait to get it!

Cool. I'm in the middle of a 250 turbo set up. Probably wont have time to get it running for a while though.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

I'm thinking about doing this too and in the research/planning/dreaming phase. Except i think i'm going to go with Megasquirt and a junkyard TBI setup.

Where did you get that exhaust manifold from?

longbed67 10-09-2011 09:11 PM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

I have worked with megasquirt and it is A LOT of messing around and guess work (and if you are not familiar with what the fuel trims should be you might detonate your engine. and in the long run is a lot more expensive than a blow thru setup, roughly you will have the same power and if your carb is tuned right there is no fuel economy gains with the tbi either, now if you have hundreds of hours with a dyno and MEGA dollars to build a direct injection head with cross flow setup then you would have some power and fuel econ gains.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

I will type my list up for the parts then post here in the next few days.... I have it written on a typing sheet right now.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

The manifold is made by SPA turbo.... If you order it through DEI they are about $150 cheaper than everybody else. but SHHHH dont tell them that or they will jack the price... the only downside is you have to drill and tap new holes and bore the center out for the wastegate due to the fact that Tial wastegates have 2 holes and a 38mm valve and the manifold is setup for some brazilian wastegate that has 3 holes and and a ridiculously smalll valve. you will also have to cut the center out of the flange on the manifold, as it is setup for a split flange turbo and most turbo's that fit this are not split, also as it is, it wont let the front 3 cylinders waste out the wastegate... so by cutting out the center divider all 6 can evenly wasteout rather than just the rear three, it will help keep pressures more equal.

Front Disc Parts List:
New Parts from any local parts store:
1972 C10 Pads
1972 C10 Left and Right Calipers
1972 C10 BCA Inner HD bearings and race
1972 C10 BCA outer bearing and race
1972 C10 Seals
1972 C10 Left and Right Brake hose
1972 C10 Banjo Bolt x2
1972 C10 Rotors x2
1972 C10 1/2" Lug Studs x10
1972 C10 Caliper bolts

Rear Disc Brake Parts List:

1985 Cadillac Eldorado Calipers and pads (I wanted the e-brake)
1985 Cadillac Eldorado e brake mounting tabs and c-clips
1985 Cadillac Eldorado Caliper bolts
1985 Cadillac Eldorado Banjo Bolts x2
1985 Cadillac Eldorado Rear Flex Brake Line
1991 Silverado Rotor blanks drilled 5 on 5

Caliper Mounting Brackets ordered from Auto City Classic in Isanti, MN
(They make a kit for the rear that includes everything you need for $350 if you dont want to piece it all together)
Their Phone # is 763-444-5880 I talked to chris

I am using a new rear axle from a 1972 c10 pickup that is already 5 bolt so I dont have to switch the bolt pattern if you have the 6 bolt setup you can get new axles that have the 5 bolt pattern for $200 or get 71-72 used rear axle for ~$150 give or take

this is gonna be fun !!

Re: Project: Turbo 250

Oh yeah I forgot to add if your buying 6 lug 72 rotors for the front because you want to keep the 6 lug pattern just use the stock 91 silverado rotors because they are already the 6 on 5.5 pattern, no need to get blanks and redrill.

Thanks, that's good to know.

As for the megasquirt, i realize it may be a huge headache but i want to try it anyway. A friend of mine set it up from scratch on two turbo cars of his so i'm hoping his knowledge will help.

Re: Project: Turbo 250

that sucks about the fenders and bed being 68 with marker lights... you going to fill them

longbed67 10-11-2011 07:40 AM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

The funny thing is that is how they came from the factory on this particular truck. It was a one owner truck, and I even questioned the fender markers when I picked up the truck, and he showed me photos of it on the day that he picked it up at the dealership after he ordered it... back in '67. The photos were date stamped so it was kinda hard to argue that they werent there. I asked for copies of the photos but he wouldnt take them out of the binder as he was afraid to "damage the photos". I am still working on his nephew to convince his uncle to get me copies. However, I really perfer the look of them not being there so I will weld in plates where the hole is.

67chevy1series 10-11-2011 06:22 PM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

yeah a small window truck with markers.... that just doesnt fit

longbed67 10-11-2011 08:52 PM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

If anyone has more info on this i am very curious as to what the deal is....
cause I highly doubt anyone photo-shopped the photos back in '67

Re: Project: Turbo 250

So, I got the front crossmember taken off the rest of the miscellaneous hangers and other crap taken off the frame and the frame sandblasted. Took a heck of a lot longer than planned. Either way its done. Hopefully I can get it painted this next week and pick up more blasting media to finish the rest of the parts. I cant wait for reassembly that is when the fun part begins. :)

hgs_notes 10-16-2011 11:58 PM

Re: Project: Turbo 250

It's fairly common with these trucks that some year specific things actually showed up in other years. I've seen a small window 68 and a large window 67, both original trucks. The usual excuse that comes up is the factory used the parts that were available and there was some crossover at some years changes. Some 72 blazers came with double wall tops when most had sngle wall tops. There are probably 71's with the 70 style gas pedals and 72's with rear view mirrors mounted to the cab roof.

So I have completed sandblasting the entire frame, 2 coats of POR 15, and then a coat of Gloss Black Tractor Enamel. I think that should keep it looking nice for a long time.
