Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Well... First off let me say hi to all and introduce myself and give a little history. My name is Evan and I have owned my truck since 1998. I bought it from a friend in high school. When I bought it, it had a tired small block and a worn out TH350. Stock suspension, sittin on some all terrain 32.50's. The body, paint, and interior were all fairly clean, and I can still remember when I first smelt that little strawberry car-freshener as I sat down in my "new" truck. I liked how it looked but I'm a hot rod at heart, sooooo...... C10, meant get it closer to the deck! I proceeded to install DJM 3" drop spindles, Belltech drop shackles and hangers. I rebuilt the small block with Vortec goods and put in a TH400 with a shift kit. Un-freakin-fortunately, the machine shop didn't install the oil return plug so the engine never properly filtered the oil which blah blah blah, no more go. My poor truck got parked in 2002 and has sat ever since, till now.:metal:
To do a resto, you'll need these items; http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00052.jpg Don't forget specialty tools http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00062.jpg Oh, and for the body work http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...320_181542.jpg Okay, okay, here are the real pics Had to make room, roll out the Nova, roll in the 79! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...623_182429.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...623_182501.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...623_182539.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...626_190300.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...626_190352.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...626_190335.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...626_190408.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...626_190423.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...d/DSC_0003.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...d/DSC_0005.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...d/DSC_0006.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...d/DSC_0007.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
I'm glad that when I was younger I spent money on suspension parts wisely, that way I could do the cheaper mods when I have kids and a wife that "steal" all my money.
The bushings for the "failed suspension freshen up plan" showed up. Poly goodness. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...320_181508.jpg And a cheap mod, cutting a coil. FYI make sure to use a knife with teeth like I did to cut, it makes short work of cutting!!! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...320_181136.jpg Welllllll, lets clean out and yank the bed shall we http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00072.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00073.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00033.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00053.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00063.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h.../DSC_00042.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Earlier this week my dad called and said my mom was going to throw away my other truck if I didn't come get it!!! My other truck is my grandpa's 1969 Chev C20 LWB and it sure as h3!! wasn't getting scrapped. I think it was just a scare tactic, AND IT WORKED GREAT! So I got my rig, and prayed it would be big enough to haul all the awesomeness that is a 1969 Chev!
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...908_115309.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...908_115257.jpg And back safely to the Chevy Refuge... I think I might have been overweight with that big load, it looks so tiny on there! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...908_173005.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Let's lighten up the cab for removal and take a look at what we are working with here...

I'm lucky my passengers never fell out or exploded! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...320_181352.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Removed rear bumper and receiver hitch apparatus device. Also threw some polish on a wheel to see if I could save it. Good 'ol chrome modulars! They'll look excellent when they get some real attention.

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Thanks Rusty and Tx Firefighter. I'm going to try to keep it moving along and I will certainly keep it as entertaining as possible. So I got a weee bit more done today, after I bribed my wife to let me lurke into the garage by taking her to breakfast and a movie! It worked!
Personally, I think this is where GM should've actually installed the steering wheel. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_175624.jpg Wow! Maybe I should try focusing and holding the camera still!:dohh: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_180437.jpg Okey dokey, let's remove that cab. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_201301.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_204231.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_205257.jpg And there it is!!! :metal: Went slicker than snot on a doorknob! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happier than a witch in a broom factory. Let's see, um, this truck build is right in my wheel house, uh, proper tools are a game changer?! Any more dopey terminology and I'll probably get banned. Seriously though, that harbor freight crane is worth it's weight in orange paint as far as I'm concerned, IMO. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_205317.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...323_205532.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
I never thought of taking the cab off with an engine hoist. Nice.

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
I'm with Rusty. I've never thought of that either. The bed but not the cab. Keep up the work

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Thanks guys. I'm really glad it worked like it did. I wasn't sure if it was going to work at first without damaging the edges where the drip rails attach, but a couple 2x4's on each side took the brunt of it. I didn't really get anything done today other than get the garage cleaned up and put the cab where it will sit while the chassis gets it make over.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_160155.jpg Had to pivot the frame over to squeeze the cab over. While taking the picture I got photobombed by some wife of mine! I told her that it was for sure going on the interweb machine! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_160202.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_160239.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_162147.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_172249.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_172314.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
And now a question for you guys that are about 437-teen steps ahead of me, I have my original hood and it is quite straight and rust free, except the front of it. Any one know if this is a part that can be cut out and repaired? Has a patch panel been invented yet for this newly rusting part of our trucks?! I'm a extreme novice at body work(if a novice at all) but I like the sound of not spending money if I can save a part, especially the original parts from my old truck.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_171153.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_171210.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_171218.jpg Oh and I saw this today! All original cruising down the road. Badged as a 327. Soooooo cool!!!:metal: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_122424.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...324_122444.jpg |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Fixing that hood rust is very doable. Since its basically flat, making patch panels won't be much of a challenge.

I can't wait to see this thing up for Truck of the Month....! I enjoy reading this one.

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Your humor hooked me! Im subscribed for entertainment value alone. The truck is just an added bonus!
|
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
I'm all for patching up that cancer! Guess I better get learned about sheet-metallin. Looks like Ima hafta do me a some google searchin, which is kind of silly being that the main results always return me back to this AWESOME forum!
I agree with you there, bikeman. I'm always on build threads, and there is nothing like one that keeps your interest peaked with good amounts of description and involvement. Funny thing is most of the pictures are taken with my phone. No such thing as a crappy cell phone pic anymore now that we have 80 gajillion mega-pixel cameras. No need for my Nikon I guess. Whoa Rusty! ToTM?! First, Thanks for the vote of confidence, second, thanks for the anxiety of now knowing how big of shoes I have to fill to try to compete with some of these absolutely flawless trucks on here! Seriously though I would love to have a truck that would even be considered in the running against some of these rigs! Thanks Maxxy. I'm glad there's other people out there with a sense of humor. IMO I always like the build entertainment value all by itself, but when the person puts a little into the presentation it keeps me wanting to check back more often. Holy mother, my typing sucks. Tip-Don't watch Family Guy and try to type if you have to look at your fingers while typing, IT TAKES FOREVER! Backspacing every other letter! |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
I probably should have done this at the top but better late then never. When I start reading a build thread I'm always curious what direction the build is intended on going. So I am going to state my intention for this build. I'm going with an 'ol skool resto here. 1979 Chevrolet Scottsdale C10 Fleetside SWB. Carbureted SBC w/ Vortec upper half and TH400 w/ shift kit to get me cruisin down the road. Eventually I'd like to get a motor in there that is worthy of my name and a 4l80e(minus the "e"). The underhood will be clean and tidy like Mary Poppins magic by way of some smooth inner fender wells and matching firewall. 5/6 Static dropped and c-notched sittin on stock style custom backspaced rally rims wrapped in BFG Radial T/A 225/60-15's up front and 295/50-15's out back. Brown and white two tone paint with white cab and all original trim and grille. Interior-brown and tan, also all original. Chassis and components will be POR-15'd and then if all goes according to plan, I'll be flat broke and bankrupt and sittin pretty in my '79!!!!!:D
Oh and just a heads up, this build will be slower during the weekdays so I apologize if the progress goes up and down like a roller coaster. I do promise however that I will make every effort to hit it hard on the weekends so that this thread will stay alive and active. My motivation is high, but my wife is hot, so I always have some sort of personal dilemma when I try to go to the garage! Thanks again everyone.:chevy: |

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
What you need... are mountains. Love it so far, I think LMC sells the front cap for the hood. Next time you move the cab, I chained across the front seat bolt holes. Worked like a champ, especially after the oil line I forgot to unhook ripped itself out of the cluster. What's next?

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Howdy kids. I went out into the garage today to play with the truck and figured hey, before I get started I'll hurry and polish my headlights on my car. Hurry. RIIIIIIIGGHHHT. So one headlight done and too many hours later I kind of did a review on 3M's Headlight Restoration Kit. I'll tell you what though, that frame and I, are going to GET IT ON... tomorrow!:metal:
2000 cents at my local O'reilly's. Yeah, it's MY O'reillys! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_210054.jpg Tools you will need http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_205724.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_205805.jpg Here we go. The test subject, one "Peoples Car" Jetta. 4 step process. 1st take your drill and attaatatch the supplied 500 grit sanding discs and ruin your headlight more than it ever was. You will be ruining your headlight for quite a while. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_185009.jpg Next, pick up the instructions and read them for the 37th time then add some secret ingredient to the mix and keep ruining http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_191754.jpg Now that your headlights are thoroughly FUBAR'd, move on to step two, which is use the supplied 800 grit discs and make your light look like you smeared flour all over it, for clarity while driving of course! It is crucial that you drink the secret ingredient and sand at the same time with the same hand. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_200725.jpg Step 3, Take the supplied 3000 grit foam pad disc and spritz, NOT SPRAY, spritz water on the aforementioned pad and headlight. Just remember, it's always better when wet. It even says to not let it dry out while doing this step. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_203453.jpg Final-ish step, atataach teh sponfs.. Obviously at this point the majority of the secret ingredient should have been consumed and you should be sluring as I have demonstrated through clever typing abilities. Attach sponge applicator and use a dime size amount of compound(supplied with kit). Dime size, not nickel, or quarter, or silver dollar, A DIME! First pic is before, second pic is after. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_171100.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_205617.jpg Now top off your blinker fluid with Royal Purple, because your blinkers deserve only the best and sit back and listen to your dumb wife tease your about how long it took you while your shriek at your children to get you another beer and enjoy the fruits of your labor! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_205902.jpg All in all I'd buy it again and I am impressed with the outcome. Very easy to use. Tomorrow, I have a date with this... http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...329_212331.jpg |

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
No problem. I was curious how well it worked before I did it so I figured why not share.
So on to the good stuff! It's Saturday, all day long. No work for me, so no excuses not to work! Only way I'm going to have a hot rod is to get busy crackin knuckles to metal! So here is where I'm startin from. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_124048.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_124102.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_124119.jpg I'm just pluggin away thinkin to myself that instead of removing the wiring harness I should probably get that tranny out that is hangin by some wire... It's at this point in my pondering and reflection the my good 'ol TH400 decides to do an eject-o seat-o on to the floor hangin by the trans mount! I mean seriously, what if my kids had been playing under there?! After quickly barking out words that rhyme with "fit" and "shuck", my cat like reflexes sprung into action and I grabbed my secret weapon... My cab liftin engine hoist! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133332.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133339.jpg I proceeded to share how I felt about the puddle of fluid now penetrating well into my concrete, http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133406.jpg After sitting in the corner crying for a short time I persevered and overcame. Gathered my wits and regained my composure http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133426.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133721.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133745.jpg Luckily, I had just picked up some newly invented specially formulated granular transmission fluid absorb-all http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_133916.jpg Finished removing the loom and then took a closer look at ye old cab mounts. Be sure to watch the for sale threads for these bad boys!!! I'll be posting them up real soon! http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_142456.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_144548.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_144621.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_144748.jpg Moved on to the power steering pump. Proceeded to remove it, along with some of the frame. Well, I guess it is lighter now?! Any one want to comment on ideas on a good repair for this, I would greatly appreciate it.:) http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_154339.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_154408.jpg Would've got the brake lines fully removed but this little rear brake line fitting decided to be a sneaky bugger and not come loose. So I removed the tanks and figured I'd do a little research before I destroyed anything. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_173615.jpg Other than the rear suspension, which I purposely have left till the end, and a couple other things that are soaking, it is just about bare. Be c-notched and POR-15'd before we know it! I'll get after it again soon!:metal: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_181044.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_181123.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_181143.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_181726.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_181920.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...330_181935.jpg Oh and just to gloat, the 'ol lady told me she is taking me to Lynyrd Skynyrd! She buys me a Nova, then she likes my chops, and now is taking me to see Skynyrd?! Oh MAN! This is my white trash red neck dream come true! |

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
Terrific writing, loving it. If there's a HF nearby, a couple casters on stands makes the frame a lot easier to deal with.
Remember the headlights? If you intend on your own paint, get used to it, it's the nearly exact same process. Can't wait to see where this goes next, if just for story alone. Please continue. The badass rental pressure washers come in handy at this stage. As for the frame, the battery powered sawzall is your friend. Go to pick a part and lop out a large chunk of the same affected area from a good frame. . Cut out bad stuff. Precisely match with new stuff and weld in. If you can't, get someone who can. Then get grade 8 clamping washers, big yellow buggers, and weld them to the backside of the mount surface. I promise I'm not a condescending prick, I hate that. I just don't know your background, other than mad humorous writing skillz. Any question, fire away, and continue, good sir! Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
So after I read your review of the headlight restoration I decided to go tackle my wifes KIA. I know no self respectin Southern should own a KIA, well you know. So instead of the stuff you used ( which I may still end up trying down the road) I busted out something from the bathroom. Toothpaste. I had heard a year or so ago to try toothpaste. I thought "really?" but it worked. I just cleaned them real good with windex and then went to it. Basically put the tooth paste on like wax and then washed it off with water. Made a big difference. I did try it in a spot that was unnoticeable first. I won't say they are perfect but got to be better than before at night. Thanks once again for humor and fun.

Re: Big Rat's 1979 C10 High School Hot Rod Restooo
I figured I would let y'all know what's I's be think I'll be doing next in the up coming weeks. It's gonna kinda be like visitation with a kid. Me being the child and the front yard and the truck being the two parents fighting over who is cooler. I know what you are thinking, you can't drive your front yard around dummy, so who cares?! That's what I'm saying too. I look at it like, finished yard means higher property value, which mean refinance, AND BUILD A SHOP! Totally logical, I know. So back to the going's on's with the truck. Get those blasted lines and ebrake removed, c-notch frame, remove rear suspension and diff, remove bottom two leafs and overload leaf, drink some beer, complain about my back, have my wife ask me if I'm coming in the house yet, me ask her "REALLY?!",:box:(her to me), then I'll spackle that poorly engineered power steering bolt hole on my frame, then clean etch and POR-15 the chassis and components, make her a roller and make my kids push me up and down the street so that I can receive praises from the masses on being a mans man and building things with might and brawn!

Cool build. Use this for the steering box area, that's a common problem on these trucks.
