89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
So after months of research and purchasing parts i'm finally digging in. I first got the motor a few years back from a Case IH agriculture sprayer that i bought and stripped after it had been hit by a train. The sprayer flew 90 feet and amazingly the motor was fine, except for the oil pan, pickup tube, and injector lines. I've been wanting to drop the motor into something for a long time. I finally bought a 6" lifted 84 crew cab chevy with the frame already shortened rust free box cab and 1990 suburban power doors and front clip and 468 big block. But i ran into a big problem.. The vin tag for the dash got lost because a new surburban dash was swapped in and the old one was cut out and, well, it disappeared... Then lucky for me a different guy in town was selling his 89 crew cab chevy with 45k original miles that he bought from the Arizona swat force. He removed the bombproof swat center room whatever you wanna call it and installed a flatbed. What's great is it's never seen salt so it's in fantastic condition, inside and out. I sold the bed for $2000 and the engine for $1500 so i don't have much invested in it. Anyway i'm pretty new to these forums so bear with me as i try to get my pics uploaded and more details will come soon.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Finished motor!
http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/...p/IMG_4404.jpg Compound turbo kit is a massive S474 over a phatshaft 62 from industrial injection with a 3 piece manifold. I went with this kit because it's supposed to , as they told me, spool like a mother fuc**er and it looks like it would fit perfect in the c/k body with the large turbo up in front rather then down under the smaller turbo. The whole truck will be painted chevy volt pearl white. I painted the engine red because it's cummins national color and it came from a CaseIH and it just looks awsome! I picked up the p-pump from a pullin truck that was gettin upgraded to a 13mm, so it already has all the goodies. The original AG pump wouldn't work because it didn't have an automotive governor. The old lines were mangled so i got .093 stainless lines to give it some lope. The injectors are SAC 7x14's should be plenty to fuel the turbos. I am building a little motor to connect to the manual fuel plate so i can adjust it on the fly inside the truck so it will be streetable since it will be my everyday driver. I put an adjustable timing gear on the injection pump to help tune things in easier with a custom made billet cover. I polished all the chrome work myself, just took it to a guy i know to have it all dipped. It's very cheap if its prepped and ready to be plated. The clutch is a south bend stage 2 which will be bolted to the dodge nv4500 with a billet 1 3/8"'s input shaft and a 1st gen reman dodge 205 with extreme duty bearings and chevy outputs. I'll get pics of it up later. As for the internals the cylinders have been bored 40 over and fitted with oversized low compression marine pistons. All new bottom end bearings and main and rods bolted together with ARP bolts and studs held together with a girdle. I sent the head out for fire ringing, 60lbs valve springs and titanium retainers and keepers. Here you can see where the old motor mounts broke off the block when the sprayer was struck by the train, lucky for me i don't need those holes. You can see the article of the accident here: http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/3191126.html |

stacks are not straight because they are not tightened. The will also be trimmed flush with the top of the headache rack. Batteries and washer fluid will be mounted in the toolbox.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Used a hot pressure washer/sand blaster to strip the frame, then sprayed the frame with a rust converter, then with a rust inhibitor primer, then with gloss black urethane enamel.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Love how well the intercooler fits/fills up the grille, awesome build.
|
Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
did you do anything to the park-turn signal lens to fit the i/c there? build is great.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Here's an update, installed an all aluminum 3 row radiator mounted and a dual feed fuel line for the injection pump.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
yea i had to cut out some of the turn signal. The intercooler goes inside the light about 2 inches. I"ll have to fiberglass the hole shut when i'm done.
|
Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
This is turning out awesome. What style intercooler did you use?
|
Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
This truck will sure be sweet when its done. I am interested in how those twins sound when they spool. How many inches did those sulastic shackles add to your lift?
|
Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
This looks like it oughtta turn out good, keep at it brother, wont be long now... if you ever need any weird or odd parts, i own about 13 untitled but decent trucks, those years like that, ill sell em to ya at a super low price, or hell! Dependin' on what it is, i might give it to you, just ask, or pm me! keep postin pics

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
you can get that i/c in there with out cutting for turn singals you'll have to reset the i/c im running the same 94-02 i/c with ac. with your twins will you be able to keep your ac?

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Thanks guys haha love your comments!
The front sulastics added about 2 inches of lift to the front and nothing to the rear which i had to add blocks.. They are not intended for front axles but i made it work, which was more work then was probably worth it... Had to brace the rear leaf shackles, add 8 degree shims, and a 3rd link. Looking back i wish i would've went with a coil conversion. The intercooler is from a 95 2nd gen dodge. To avoid cutting the lights i'd have to gut the core support wouldn't I? I'm trying to keep as much clearance from the injection pump cover so i can quickly change the adjustable timing gear.. Sorry i don't have any updated pics yet but were in the middle of harvest so there's no such thing as spare time:( I did talk to my painter today, he practiced the white pearl paint on a mailbox. He's not very excited to do the whole truck since there's 4 stages of pearl coats then multiple clear coats! haha I bet he regrets the price he quoted me now, i'll have to give him a nice big tip if he does a good job. Should have some pics from him this saturday. |
Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

This will be a awsone build to watch I live the square bodys I've owned a bunch of them.
I'm infor the ride. I would probably trade my 70 if I could find a nice 4X4 square body. |
Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Here's an update, got the roll cage finished. Didn't turn out too bad for the first one i've ever built.. A lot of welding burns but it was worth it. The last guy with this motor died, I don't want to be the 2nd!

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
Does your cage go to the frame or is it just in the cab?

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap
LOL Thanks guys!
The cage is just welded to the cab floor where the cab braces are. Got the rear Ford King Ranch seats mounted yesterday, took most of the day.. Bought a 5x50" 3/16ths plate, drilled and welded bolts to it and welded it to the floor. Then made another plate for the front support braces which had to be shortened which restricted the distance the seats folded forward. But at least they still fold forward so I can access the amp and subs which should fit nicely. Thanks for the comments! Here's some pics: http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/...-14-07_857.jpg http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/...-15-06_675.jpg http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/...-46-28_208.jpg |
