1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Hi,
Just had to show everyone my project that I've been working on since this last fall. Over the winter not much was accomplished except for sheet metal work to the cab. Currently I'm working on the truck every day, all day and plan to over the summer so it will be back on the road before winter. I got this project truck for free off craiglist completely disassembled. The people I got it from had it in their garage for 4 years and they were tired of looking at it, and wanted to move on to something new. So they gave it to me. I will keep this updated with pictures of everything I do to it. This the condition of it when I got it late last fall.... http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1664Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1665Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1666Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1667Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1668Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1669Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1670Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1671Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1672Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...1673Medium.jpg More to come..... |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
This is an update of what I have done to it since I first got it...
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n..._0329Large.jpg After I removed the old 250 straight six and granny gear 4 speed manual. They are going to be replaced with a 350 engine and a 700R4 4 speed automatic transmission. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...350Large-1.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...351Large-1.jpg New sheet metal to replace the rusted/missing and automatic floor hump welded in to replace the large manual one. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n..._0344Large.jpg I converted it over from manual steering to power. It bolts in perfect but the bumper bracket doesn't fit (it hits the pump) so I have to modify the bumper bracket slightly. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n..._0353Large.jpg The step side fender is finished with the body work. The fender was completely warped all down the top so it took a lot of bondo to shape it back to its original shape. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n..._0328Large.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...349Large-1.jpg Started working on the door and I found that it had a very "thick" paint job. There is a ton of bondo build up on it and they bondoed over random holes like the factory mirror holes and other ones. I welded up the holes except for the mirror ones and ground them down. Now for tommarow more paint removal and bondo the dents on the door. |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Good work!! Looking forward to seeing progress!

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Thanks for the comments on the project, I worked some more on the door today.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...Door2Large.jpg I removed all the paint off the door and welded all the holes.... http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...Door5Large.jpg I pulled out the dents and bondoed them and now the exterior of the drivers door is now ready to be primmed. The cab is also close to being ready for primer. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...adio1Large.jpg Unfortunately the radio area is in bad shape someone did a "redneck radio cutout" with a sawzall. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...adio2Large.jpg This is my fix for the radio "hole" a plastic cover that fits right in the out line of the hole. I cut it out of an old dell laptop screen case and then sanded the edges. I still need to cut a nice hole in it to fit the radio in. |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
I need to decide what color I'm going to paint this thing..... I'm thinking blue with white top but the question is what color blue? Please give some ideas/pictures on what would look good. I've been working on the doors some more so I can prime them tomorrow.
Thanks, Matthew |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Keep up the good work, it's looking better already!:D

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Thanks,
I'm going to try to get my priming done this week on the cab and doors if possible. Probably will go into next week though knowing the way things go. More pictures to come soon.... |

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well I have made some progress I primed the drivers door. Its not perfect (theres still some small dents in the bottom inside of the door) but its good enough for me. :)

Update: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
I finished the passenger side door today so it is ready to be primed. I also finished the cab so it can be primed as well, finally the hard part of this project is over! There's still lots to do, I have to do the hood, the drivers side stepside fender, and get a tailgate (the one I have is for a GMC not Chevy). If I remember right the front fenders are replacement ones so they won't need much work, anyway here some pictures of the door and cab.

Man, you are just hauling on this thing!
At this pace, you should have no problem getting it done before summer ends. I'll be watching this one, for sure. -Sam. |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well, you're moving right along aren't you:) Looks god, you'll have it done in no time at this pace!:D

Thanks,
Its great to hear positive response on this project I can't wait till its done. These are some more parts I need to strip of paint, weld up holes in the hood, and bondo/sand. This project sure has enough sanding bondo.... http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...4243Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...4244Medium.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...4245Medium.jpg |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

I like the Color Combo of Blue/White, Have you narrowed down the Blue Yet? Rick |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Not sure on what color blue I'm going to paint it yet but I really need to decide that soon so I can buy some paint. I'm going to try and get the cab primed this week possibly. Any ideas on the color would be good...

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
A friend of mine painted his truck the same blue as the new Nissan 300s. It's a BC/CC that almost looks like a candy. Here's a pic, it doesn't look near as good as in person but you get the idea.

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Thanks for the comments and pictures!
I haven't had the time to work on it lately because I've been helping a friend with changing the engine in his car. I did manage to get the hood striped and bondoed. I can't paint/prime anything for awhile because the paint booth has a truck in it being repainted but that should be done soon. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...HoodMedium.jpg |
Update: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well I got some more done on the 69'. I finished the drivers side step side fender and now it just needs to be primed. I'm almost done with body work and about ready to prime and paint everything. I also dug out two 69-72 replacement fenders out of the attic. They are in good shape except for some small dents and dings. After those are done its time to paint, even thought I haven't decided on what color blue yet but still.

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Thanks!
I finished the body work on the passenger side fender. Now to fix the small dents in the drivers side fender. I also need to find a grill shell for a good price off the internet with good shipping prices to Alaska. If you know of somewhere that has one for a good price (maybe used) let me know. Here's a picture of the fender: http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...ishedSmall.jpg |
Update: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
I've finally decided on the exact color I want to paint the truck! :chevy: This was a long decision, I originally wanted to paint it blue with a white top. This has now changed I was looking in a magazine and saw a picture of Stacey David's 67 Chevy Truck, Copper Head from Trucks/Gearz. I really love the color so I decided that I'm going to paint it the same being that I have never seen that same color up on any truck up here in Alaska so it will be one of a kind up here. It looks really good as a solid color and would look great on a stepside.
I found this on his website: CUSTOM PAINT CODES "Copperhead Metallic" Custom Color created by Stacey David and Ron Payton of PPG Paint and bodywork by Kevin Tetz; additional paint and bodywork by Malcolm Pritchett Take these formulas to any PPG Distributor and they'll make a custom mix just for you! 1 QUART FORUMLA CODE COLOR CUM. Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
I finished doing the body work and bondoing/sanding the drivers side fender. So I think I'm done doing all the major body work on all of the parts of this truck! Now its time for a lot of painting..... The guy at the paint shop is mixing up the Copperhead metallic paint for me too so I should get that soon.
Here's a picture of the fender: http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...ishedSmall.jpg |
Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well I just got an awesome 69-70 complete grill off Craigslist. It was a really good deal, they were asking $200 but they thought it wasn't in very good condition so they gave it to us for $100! There is almost no damage to it at all and the chrome is in really good condition for it being completely original. I also scored on a stepside rear chrome bumper brand new. The guy ordered one and got sent the stepside one for his fleetside truck. I bought it from him for $100. I'm really excited about this because now I have every part to complete the exterior of the truck minus front bumper...
Here's some pictures: http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...mper1Small.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...mper2Small.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...rill1Small.jpg It came with some extra chrome headlight surrounds. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...rill2Small.jpg |

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well its been a long time since I did any work to the 69' lots of things have been getting in the way, vacation and other random projects. This week I finally got some stuff done. We painted a old fender that I had laying around as a test fender for paint colors, just to make sure I really liked the Copperhead color I picked. I attached a picture of it. Last week I picked up a new chrome front bumper so I have all exterior body parts now. Today I worked on fixing the bed sides there were a lot of holes in the top that someone drilled, so I had to go a weld them up and then bondo them to make it nice and straight. I only got one finished up today, I'll work on the other one tomorrow.
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...enderLarge.jpg The painted area on the lower part of the fender has black primer behind it, the upper has gray primer behind it. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...SidesSmall.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...ides2Small.jpg http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n...ides3Small.jpg |

Nice color choice!:D

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Do a silver basecoat then spray the copper on. It'll look so much better!

Update: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well a big update we got lots of priming done today. We primed the cab and under the cab by lifting the front with the engine hoist. We also primed the stepside fenders. There was one bad thing that happened while we were painting it was sunny when we started then it started to cloud up and sprinkle rain. There was nothing we could do so we just kept painting and only a few drops really got on it so should just sand right out during wet sanding. Anyway here are some pictures:

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
Well not a huge update but I've been doing a lot of sanding. Not on the 69' cab but on another project. I've been helping my dad with a 95 Chevy truck that we are repainting so that's taking up a lot of my time sanding it, ect. The good news is that it should be getting done soon so I can get back to sanding that primer on the 69'. Then I can paint on some Basecoat black on to give the copperhead color the right look.
