60-66 hood and grille combos

I save most of the 60-66 pics that I see.
I have collected quite a few shots of the different combos of hoods and grilles together.
I would like to do a post that shows all of the different combos for reference.
there are 5 different hoods, and 7 different grilles. that should give us 35 different combos, if we count painted-vs-chrome grilles that gets us 70 combos, if we count the 62 chev and gmc hoods as seperate because of the clear park lights we add 28 more... then if we count the modified to fit big truck grilles...and the hoods with shaved park lights...cowl hoods... 60-61 hoods on 64-66 trucks...this could go on forever!

some technical info:
all the hoods will bolt on to all the trucks. the only exception is the Low Cab Foward hood which is about 2 feet short.
When I put a 60-61 hood on my 65 (62-66) I noticed that the hood pin from the 60-61 is about 2 inches longer than the 62-66 pin. once that the pin was changed the hood latched perfectly.

all the grilles 60-66 chev/gmc 1/2 ton to 40 series use the same 2 upper outside bolt holes.
the breakdown should be:
60-66 gmc, 60-63 chev use the same 4 holes.
64-65-66 chev use the same 3 holes.
the big truck grilles can be modified to fit:
the 50-80 series chev use a flat: 90 degree angle grille support, so in order to utilize one of these grilles the bracket from a 1/2 ton-40 series grille must be installed.
the 60-63 chev grille will fit better if it is sectioned about an inch, however I do have a pic of a direct bolt on as well.
the 64-66 chev grille will fit if the CHEVROLET letters are removed from the top.
the gmc grilles are exactly the same as the light truck, except for the mounting bracket.
also, the 1/2 ton to 40 series grille support changed when gm switched away from the x frame in 63, so a 60-62 chev and gmc grille support will not work on a truck with a 63-66 frame without a little modification.

on to the pics:
please post up ones you have as well!

Great history of hoods and grills there.

If and when I can find a 60-61 bubble hood I plan on swapping my 64 hood and will be changing out the single headlight grill for a dual bulb one.

This is a great thread. Hopefully people will post more mix and match combos. I've been testing out this 61 Chevy hood on my 64. I also have a painted 62 grill and an aluminum 62 grill I'd like to try with this hood. I love the 62 grill but I'm not sure how it will look with the 61 hood.

I was thinking about this last night, wondering what gm might have done, this might have been how they would have done it, this has the 63 grille, and the 456 CHEVROLET letters installed on the top.

the 63 grille is so big , like the gmc, it really would probably look fine by itself in the big truck opening

Hey, Jonzcustomshop I am glad to see someone put a chrome bumper in combo with the painted grille. I am finishing up a 64 LWB fleetside and I am using the same combo. I think its looks good.

64-66 big truck grill for my 64 c10.
Bowtie removed from center(going to use it somewhere else on truck).
Chevrolet letter bar removed from top of grill and reattached in center opening. Everything rechromed and bar on letter bar blacked out. I saw this on another truck a few years back and loved the clean, simple look of it.
Sorry about the fire and water damaged grill surround, it hadn't been stripped and phosphated yet when I took this picture.

Nice, I have wondered about doing this. Does the big truck grill bolt up the same?

Can you turn that grill around? I think it would look a little better with that gap above the grill smaller. Just my opinion and wondering if it would work.

here are a couple more like it-

"Nice, I have wondered about doing this. Does the big truck grill bolt up the same?"

to make this setup work, you need to utilize all the support structure from the c10. and toss the c60 stuff

OOPS, I forgot to add that you need to remove the big truck headlight buckets and replace them with the C10 ones. You'll also need to weld some tabs to the back of the grill for the letter bar to mount to.

Rarest of the rare here, this is the only one I've ever seen. Its a chrome or aluminum grill with no mesh in the middle, and a bowtie in the center. I want one for Goldilocks, but severely doubt that I'd ever find one!

Just find a big truck grill and remove the Chevrolet bar off the top. The bowtie is already in the center and no mesh. A little different version of mine.

That would work except the big truck grills are smooth across the top, without "Chevrolet" stamped in the upper bar. I could cut the mesh out of a normal grill, but there's no way I'm ruining my perfect original grill!

John,
I missed the impressed lettering. Stock, painted 64-66 grills are pretty common and fairly cheap. Buy one and remove the mesh area, weld in a cross strap for the bowtie to mount up and rechrome or paint. I'll even donate a bowtie off a big truck grill to you.
Dean

Brilliant thread! I love the way the pod hoods look with the GMC grilles, and I was planning a 63 grille with a flat GMC hood-now I know I like the look!
