1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
A friend of mine bought this ages ago. He tried to sell it in 2000 but had no takers. He found some problems with the camper part and scraped it. And like so many other projects, it languished. I know a lot of us know how that goes haha!
Now this particular friend and I have a history of swapping projects back and forth. I picked it up from him intending to use the cab and other misc parts. Next we made another trade and it ended up his again. The problem arose when I kept running into 68bowties thread on his C30 resurrection. "My" C30 was just sitting at my friends, so I reacquired it =) I have it scheduled to come home June 14th on a rollback. It runs fine, but has a bad water pump and mismatched roller junk tires and wheels. |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Here is a pic of it when he tried to sell it. I figured you guys would like to see both pages and not just the little pic of the motor home. If you want to see it full size click on the link and click view larger image under the picture ...

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
I have the correct bench (it had buckets) and new dark olive Cheyenne Super seat cover for it. I probably will just toss the bench in until I get done going through the inside and once Im happy with that Ill put the new cover on it. My end game with the interior is to have it completely stock, but Ill probably keep the compass =)
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...C39A400D9.jpeg I want the engine compartment as close to completely stock as makes sense to me. I like the total resto's with the numbers scrolled on the firewall and such, I'm just not up to going to the concurs road haha. Going to need a new auxiliary battery box and probably the correct harness. And there are several things on there that I have no idea what is going on. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...EAD085E44.jpeg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...18BC1FC6E.jpeg One of the new wheels I purchased. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...169645BAC.jpeg Ill add to the thread as I plug along ... |

Looks like a real good start to a neat project...enjoy!

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Lovin' the C30 action CG! Do you plan to make it a flat bed also?
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Yes flat bed is the plan. I hope I can pull it off (bad track record haha).
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
That will make a great hauler. You have a nice clean cab/chassis to start with.
How long are you making the bed? |

Edit: I just looked it up. My Corvair is about 15.5 feet long. I dont think I want a bed that long. So much for the dream =) |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Before I get new tires I need to decide what to do with the wheels. Truck is going to stay white. Paint is crap right now, looks like a repaint or two, done poorly. Ill redo it someday.
I cant decide, keep the wheels grey how they came, paint them white, or paint them black? I dont want to powder coat because I want it to be easy to change color down the road if I feel like it. There will be no beauty rings or shiny little caps. Possibly may get some simulators to toss on once in a while. Flat bed will be painted black, wood portion will be stained darkish. Thoughts on wheel color? |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
The simulators are only a few hundred bucks.
Might as well just throw them on there when you put tires on. I think they would look great with the rough paint |

Subscribing to follow along. Cool old rig!

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
I really like the green/white/brown interior look, especially with the green carpet.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome

Had a buddy move this from my house out to the family farm to make room at home. I’ll be spending all week after work clearing out my shop so I can get right on the C30. Sounds simple to most, but I’m really a very messy pack rat. I have a very difficult time trying to break that bad habit. Weird I know.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
I really like the idea of a 71 (Thank You, Lord, it's a 71, disc brakes...) Fat block, PS, PB, AC, AND auto trans. There's another thread here, similar options, might be a 350..
I'd have to stay with the white color, don't have to re-do the jambs. The white interior looks nice. I have a friend with a 72 C10, interior is orange and white. i really like the green and white. The new wheels look like 16's? |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Yes new wheels are 16's. While I like the look of the larger wheels my goal is to keep the deck as low as possible without actually lowering the truck.
The new wheels are right out of what "the book" calls for on this make and model (the original split rims are long gone, whew haha). Just working on tires now without breaking my truck bank. |

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
The common dually tire size for those wheels is LT225-75R16. If you didn't already know...might be the cheapest to buy. I see folks use other sizes, some too wide to the rim, and the rears will rub each other on the ground, that's a no-no.
If you don't mind buying from Wal Mart, you can go to their website, and plug in that tire size. The can get about any brand, It will show all the brands they can get, with prices, and any tire that your closest store doesn't carry can be shipped to your store for free... |

C30 Came home today.
I need a new quality tinted windshield. Open to suggestions, I know there have been threads on this. I have a correct NOS rubber. I have to decide slider or not for the rear window. I’m leaning slider. I have both and new rubber. I still haven’t decided on tires so I need to figure that one out. These are the few things I want to start with. |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
No real updates yet. Have had a bunch of questions answered via the board. Ive ordered a few parts here and there. Today I ordered 7 tires (six plus a spare), and a set of wheel simulators from Summit. I just couldn't decide on wheel color, and like Chevyland said, simulators are cheap. Hopefully Ill have time to get in there and really get my hands dirty by the end of the month ... Always something getting in the way =)

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
I would be so tempted to cut that frame down to a 127” wheelbase and put a Fleetside bed on it. I’d love to have a dually truck with some grafted stepside fenders.
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
You would have to graft the entire rear frame because of the big kick up on the C30. Plus I’m pretty sure the frame channel is larger on the 157 inch wb frame then the shorter wb trucks. But I agree, it would be cool. Way beyond my skill level for sure.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Went to the DOL today after work to get my plates, tabs, and registration. She asked if it was still a motor home? ... Nope ... Do you have a bed on it? ... Nope ... OK, what you have to do is get your flat bed on there and then we can get you all road legal. Its going to have to be weighed too.
Guess I better get my butt in gear and figure out the final idea for the flatbed. |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Oh no. It took me seven (yes seven) trips to DMV and CHP to finally get my papers sorted out. And even then I had something not right that I had to sign an affidavit for. Good luck!
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
The truck is titled as a cab and chassis. And the title is already in my name, so I was really surprised she said I still needed to jump through a couple of hoops. Hopefully it wont be seven trips lol!

Hopefully it is easier in WA than CA As 68bowtie said They have plenty of hoops to make you jump through. Good luck Also, I think the chrome simulators you got will add a nice touch ‘Break up the white‘ ? Is your flatbed going to be white or black ? I’ve always thought a white cab with aluminum flatbed and chrome wheels Would look killer Problem is the bed costs twice as much as the truck is worth |

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
So far Ive gotten my wheel simulators, the entire grill assembly I purchased from a board member, and four of the seven tires I ordered. I'm on hold right now trying to find out what happened to the rest of my tire order.
The parts I ordered from Rock Auto still haven't arrived. I have my inner fenders and core support ready to go. Not sure what else Ill need until I remove the nose and do a little detail work. Edit: Even though I got one tracking number the rest of my tires are coming in two more separate shipments via two different carriers ... UPS and FedEx, so odd. Supposed to be here Monday and Tuesday. |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Update: I’ve been working on my panel and a couple home projects so this is sitting. I still need to get valve stems, which I’m totally unsure how to figure that out. I have to get a full set of lugnuts and rings because I can’t find the lugnuts I want to use that make it so I don’t have to use a rings I have a line on a couple of different flatbeds, one with a lift function. That’s it for now
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
What are you trying to figure out on the valve stems?
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Never having owned a dually before dont they need to be curved or something vs plain ol straight ones? I suppose Im probably over thinking.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
All dual one ton stems I've seen all had short straight valve stems. Having a gauge with one of those dual heads, is about the only way to check the air in them...
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
If you go to a regular truck tire shop they have brass bendable stems about 4" long that they bend and route out so they are accessible just like the outer dual.
|
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
More very helpful info ... Thanks guys, much appreciated.
I went with metal med length valve stems. Thanks to a couple board members I found the lug nuts I wanted so I don't have to run the rings. Soon as that stuff comes in Ill run them over to my tire guy and get everything mounted up. I put the truck in my little shop and have started taking out the interior. I think Ill just treat the little bit of rust with some Rust Mort for now. I dont want to get into any metal replacement till I decide if Im really going to like this thing. Being a Super it has the nicer interior, but I really love the rubber mats vs the carpets. So I think Id rather spend my money on one of those instead of new carpets. Looks like we are finally having a run of nice weather so I might go ahead and put the new Super seat cover on the bench. Lets see, what else? Im not sure what the stock mirrors are called, camper mirrors? They pivot in close or you can pivot them out for better rear vision. Anyway I bought a set of those large size rectangular mirrors to try instead. Board member davepl has them on his blue GMC, he had his chromed though. Too much dough for me =) |
Re: 1971 Cheyenne Super C30 Ex Motorhome
Sounds like a great plan!!!
If you ever decided to sell it, it would sell, very easily, being a 71 (disc brakes!!!, auto trans, big block, and now modern wheels/tires. |
