Picked up a Burb this weekend
5 Attachment(s)
I picked up the 61 GMC that I have had my eyes on for a while. I am stoked! :metal: It has been in WY since at least 74 when it was last titled, making me the 3rd title owner. The guy I bought it from said it has been sitting for the last 10 years or so. It is gonna be a fun project & I will start a build thread soon but here it is for now.
Currently it has the V6 305 and no tranny. Has the front seats but they are shot. The rear area needs to be cleared out, it is full of old magazines, cans, and part of a bed. I did find an extra Chevy gauge cluster in there too. The exterior has some surface rust and the fenders are shot. I will have some body work to do but that is no big deal for me. All the trim is there less mirrors, and is in great shape. |
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
Great score man! Are you for sure that it is a '61 and not a '62? The only reason I ask, besides the hood, is that I thought the custom trim started in '62. Oh, and let's get some close ups of those bucket seats!

Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
Love the trim, nice score.

Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
There's one of those rare-ish hood birds that pop up every so often. Didn't I see a post on these awhile back? Factory black?
Cool find, have fun. |

Has anyone seen a coil over set up like this? It looks to be an over load system of sorts but I'm not sure. Here also, are a couple shots of the seats. And one of the work I have to do in back.

Thanks for the comments! What ever the seats are, they fold flat forward & they are not sticking around too long. I am picking up seats soon along with other parts to get it on the road. :metal:

The hood bird IS MORE RARE than you can know. I've got mine restored but yours looks great as is. There were two birds, BUT ONLY ONE for the 60-61 GMC. They had a long nose version in the 57-59 model years and the short nose version in the 60-61 (hump hood) years.
|
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
Nice rig. That's gonna be really cool cruizing in.

Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
I found an article on line talking about the uniqueness of the "stub nose" jet. That was one of the things that sold me on this thing. I will probably get at it a bit this week. I have to come up with a plan to haul the junk off that is in it. Then I can work on the floor and such.

Another question I have on it. I am trying to finalize my budget for this rig and was looking at radiators. I work in a body shop, therefore I have a couple radiator vendors. One can get me a new radiator for a 63 pickup. Would it fit my Burb? |

I went out today and lubed up door & tailgate hinges. Much better, but I now have some questions about the clam shell tailgate. My top half does not close well at all. I think the top hinges are to blame. I can get it mostly closed but then have to push up & in on the top half above the glass. Then I can push it in to latch to the lower gate. Otherwise, it shuts tight now.
I also looked over the engine bay. I think this thing would run with a little (and a mean a little) love. I am gonna see if it will turn over later this week. There is a little tag hanging off the motor that has "159" stamped in it. It has me wondering too. Any thoughts on that little tag? (1st picture, dead center. On the water pump.) |

Driveway,
The correct interior color for the 60-62 years was a light silver called Silver Fawn metallic, I have the paint code if you need it. The top of the dash was a semigloss "Charcoal Grey" (anti-glare) See pictures. |
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
I forgot to add . Button up your carb with a few HD garbage bags, remove the alt/generator and spray a good amount of Purple Stuff Degreaser on her, let set for an hour and using a steam cleaner orPSI washer, not the crude off.
|
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
Thanks! As I looked at the interior more yesterday, I saw the silvery color to it. But the dash top is a turquoise now. As I look at the jambs and such I am staring to think this thing may have been a factory black. Gonna dig through it this week and see if I can find a build card in the mess that is the interior.

Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
Tag on the water pump is probably a rebuilders tag or an old parts house stock tag.
|
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
Ordered up some misc parts this weekend. Should be here this week. I am working on gathering parts to get it on the road. Need to figure out motor mounts, button up the motor, then I can set it all in and build a crossmember for the new tranny.
Oh yeah, I found a set of drop springs from a buddy...cheap. Then I gotta get the front down to match. |
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
When I got my 1960, it had been sitting for around 10 years without running. I pickled the cylinders with regular motor oil, turned the crank by hand a few revs and let it set for a week. the truck ran but I could not get it to start off the starter, had to pull it around the neighborhood with a neighbors' truck and I dropped the clutch about 6 times before he fired off.
|
Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
My 61 had been sitting since around 89-91. I lubed the cylinders and spun it around a while and after changing the coil and points it fired up with starting fluid. Even with bad gas in it it still ran ok. It cost about 100 bucks in parts after running a little. Normal stuff like water pump and fuel pump and wires. Carb cleaning /rebuild, new gas, tune-up and valve adjustment and you should be good to go.

Re: Picked up a Burb this weekend
