1965 C-10 LS build
This is my build that I started last year. It is a 1965 C-10 short bed fleet side. I bought the truck that was taken apart and the restoration started by the previous owner. I finshed up some his work but had to redo other work that he attempted. I replaced both inner and outter fenders. Replace the right door and re-skined the left door. The truck came with 350 ci and a turbo 350 trans. I decided to go with a 5.3L out of a 2005 silverado and a 4L60E transmission. The rear end was rebuilt with 5 lug axles and a Aburn posi unit with 3:73 gears. I have a lot more work to do but hope to be driving it by summer. I will be try to add pictures as I get further into the build. Thanks in advance for looking at my build. :chevy:
I was unable to upload any pictures so I added a link for my Photo Bucket. http://s1224.photobucket.com/albums/...010%20Project/ |

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
I was able to post a couple of pictures of my truck. Yesterday I finished up with the welding on the rocker panel. All the parts came in for the cylinder heads now I can finish them up tomorrow and if everything goes ok I will put in the engine and trans. After that I can finished up the electrical wiring for the engine and transmission. I will be able to figure out what exhaust headers I am going to use. I have read some different posts here and it looks like a majority of them like the Doug Thorley headers. I have seen that a few people used headers from a 2000-2002 camaro. A local speedshop said that a few people have used the headers from a 1969 camaro conversion. Was wondering if anyone else has tried it to use the headers from a 1969 camaro with any luck? Thanks for looking at my post and have a great Sunday. :bowtie:

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
The headers in this members build look like they fit fairly good. The part number is in post #100.

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
CaptainFab, Thanks for the info on the headers. I will go down to the local speed shop to see what they have in stock. The DynaTech's look pretty good on that truck.

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
Today I was able to get the heads together and installed on the engine. I rebuilt the rocker arms with the Comp Cams trunion kit. (That was easier than I thought it would be.) Put the rocker arms on and adjusted the valves. I installed the harmonic balancer and the flex plate. Hopefully I will get the motor and trans installed tomorrow. :metal:

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
I got the engine and trans installed today. It was not easy. I had issues with the motor mounts. I have the CCP frame mounts, they worked great with the sbc, but it took some work to get them to get them to work with the LS engine. I read a few post about issues with these mounts and getting headers to clear. Has anyone ever had issues with motor mounts and these frame mounts? I used poly mounts from CCP. I'm not sure if this is going to be and issue but I had to remove the steel backing plate that is used with the poly mounts. After loosing up the frame mounts everything went together. After the wiring and saving up some money exhaust will be next. :chevy:

The harness is done just need to run the wires and clean up the harness. First I need to figure out where to put the computer. http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/...s/IMG_1799.jpg :chevy: |
Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
Wow, that LS motor looks right at home sitting in your truck. Nice job. please post lots of pics doing the wiring like where you have to splice into the factory truck harness or adding a wire here and there. I have been thinking about doing one of these swaps in my truck someday but Im not good at the wiring game.

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
Was your original motor mount in the front holes on the frame rail? I felt like mine was too close to the radiator in that location. Also my perches are under the 3 & 4 ports looks like yours are 1 & 2 ports. BBK headers for comaro may fit yours the way it is

Well :welcoem: to the board, and you do have a really nice build going on here!!
Wish I was there to help you with the wiring, so when I get to that point, not only would I be less intimidated by it, but I would have a pal to come help! Keep posting pics, we are addicted to progress!! |

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
Things to consider when wiring the motor up. Do you want to drill a big 1.5" hole through the firewall? Or do you want to use a plug that seperates it? I'm looking at putting min behind the cab and running the harness over the top of the tran's this way i can just shoot straight down each bank and keep it clean. These motor's look clean if you can either move or dress up the coil pack's.
Just an FYI the Carshop sells 1" set back plates for $45.00 if you need to move the motor back some. To me the front area will be tight. Nice job thus far |

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
I have been working on the engine wiring over the past few days. I have about 90% of the wiring done. I have the computer mounted, the TAC unit mounted and both the fuse box for the engine harness and the new fuse box and wiring for the truck mounted. I still have to run the trucks wiring harness though. I still need to clean up the wires and put the wires in loom but its getting close. I mounted the drive by wire gas pedal but need to cut the pedal and move it up a little bit to make it a little more comfortable. Nothing a little cutting and welding will take care of.
The new rear mounted gas tank came yesterday from Brothers Truck parts. I think I will give my brain a rest from wiring and on Monday get the tank, fuel pump and lines finished up. http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_18092.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMG_1808.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMG_1812.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMG_1805.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMG_1806.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_18142.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_18132.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_18072.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMG_1804.jpg On a different note if any one around the southern Chicago suburbs CPC power coating in Crest Hill has a deal on powercoating frames. The latest Lead Foot News paper has an add in it that shows $300.00 for any car frame blasted and power-coated. This is the place that did mine, never had a problem with their work. :metal: http://www.cpcpowdercoating.com/page1.html |
Re: 1965 C-10 LS build

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
I tried 3 different sets with no luck. Your perch location is forward of mine so you may have better luck. I am going with DT from Shon, $550 well worth it if I can get past this hump. If not in the trash goes the CPP perch's and on to plan "E". :waah:

Shon has them in stock, check the thread below, he has set up a group purchase to help with the price.

I tried the set of headers from a 69 Camaro, they didn't fit very good. Looks like I am going to have to buy that style. Are they long tube? :metal: |
Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
They just cleared, the are not long tube they are mid.

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
A little update on the build. My gas tank came in and got it put in. I gave the wiring a little break and decided to move the battery to the drivers side. I cut in a box in the inner fender near the core support. I'm going to run the cold air intake and filter to the passenger side where the factory battery was located. I finished up the metal work on the cab and bed sides going to ship the bed sides and the hood off to the body shop on Thursday. I wanted to take a few pictures but the camera battery was dead. Will try to post some pictures on Thursday morning, after work. I sold the old motor and trans yesterday so now have some extra money for new parts. :metal:

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
I was looking at different motor mount adapters and found that the ones that I used that were mark as for install the engine in the stock location (Transdapt Brand) moved the engine forward almost 2 inches. I found a set of Hooker Headers motor mount adapters that did put the engine in the stock location. About 2 inches back from the other brand.
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_17952.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_17942.jpg This should help a little with headers fitting. It also gives me a little more room between the radiator and the water pump pulley. Below is a couple of picture of where I move the battery to. My welding skills aren't as good as alot of people but the grinder will clean them up. I also posted a couple of pictures of the gas tank. http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_17962.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_17982.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_17992.jpg http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_18002.jpg USPS dropped off some more parts the past couple of days. I delievered my bed side and the hood to a body guy today. Should have them back in a couple of weeks nice and straight and ready for some blocking and more priming. Has anyone out there ever used Hot Rod Flatz paint? Wondering how it sprayed out? Hopoe everybody has a good night. :chevy: |
Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
Yes, and with your current engine location I think you will be good to go.

Re: 1965 C-10 LS build
just checked your thread, awesome build. i love the ls motors and the are capable of some serious horsepower, since you have already cut down your inner fender that would be a great place for a turbo:metal:
