69 slammed, 22"/24" bbc shaved clean
Hey guys, I have had this c10 pickup project laying around for a few years. I had picked up a 66 suburban a little over a year ago and got a little side tracked. I like many hotrod and truck guys had a few too many projects going on at one time not to mention the wife and I just finished building our house and detached garage over the last few years.
My expectations where to have a nice c10 short bed p/u with a classic look. Nate's suspension parts were a definite to give it that sick stance. I wanted a truck that was slammed. I also like big tires and wheels so having 24" wheels on the back was a necessity. A dream was to have 14 inch brakes all the way around the truck but I imagine I am going to settle for 13 inch on the front and 12 inch on the back. Those 12" rotors are going to long mighty small on those big wheels but remember that 66 burb that needs attention too. Because of my time crunch I did drop the truck off at a local shop to fabricate the bed frame and wheel tubs. We ended up with a lot of metal in the rear after making accommodations for a two battery box, brackets for the air tank and big twin truck brake boosters (one for front and one for rear), and a few compartments for the air ride pump and valves. Another want is a clean firewall. We ended up going with the Wildwood under dash brake peddle set up with the reservoirs behind the glovebox. I went with a column mounted shifter because I thought it looked clean so we have a cable system going to the tranny. Drip rails are shaved, no door handles, flush windshield, suicide doors, and all Porterbuilt stuff welded on and smoothed. I know there is a lot of knowledge on this forum and hoping to get some good advice as i am building. I also have a 66 suburban and if this c10 goes well I would make the 66 my next project. http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0943.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0942.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0938.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0937.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0936.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0935.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0934.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0933.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0932.jpg http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0931.jpg |

I have a long ways to go but I really like the brake set up you have. Im like you not a big fan of having the brake pedel push into the floor like the older trucks. I will be taking notes. o ya love the truck its looking great. a great insparation.

Big Progress Today
You know some days are just more productive than others. Today was one of those great days. We got the front sheet metal bolted on, doors hung, and trimmed the inside of the front fenders so we could at least get the truck to lay down. We did get everything to line up pretty good for the initial bolt on. I might add again we spent months on those suicide doors......we ended up building our own hinges and man that is one pain in the rear end. We also cut in the Porterbuilt hinges and have them mounted. We'll be doing lots of work to them to get them to feel more molded in than bolted on. I have had these hinges for a long long time.......since Nate has some hydraulic options with these hood hinges. Really not sure where we'll go with them but heck its day one of the assembly process. I love looking at the truck laying on the ground.
http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0946.jpg I have not researched the front fender solution for my truck. The 22's + tires end up at the top of the fenders........cool:metal: Need something to keep from slinging mud on the bottom of the hood. Cardboard is the cheapest material to fabricate so we came up with a quick mockup of a fender that would not look like a fender......pretty much would taper down to the upper control arm. I don't know, I am just fishing for opinions from you guys. http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0945.jpg |

do you have a original picture of the hood hinges off the truck? and i agree completely, the fender idea turned out great, it will be a great looker.

i know we have talked but i didnt know if you had seen these pictures, this would solve your problem with having something smooth that would compliment your firewall and keep all of the water and debri out of your engine compartment while still showcasing the nice suspension....SLOSH TUBZ just sayin

Re: 69 slammed, 22"/24" bbc shaved clean
Today was another great work day in the garage. I have been checking out Kore 3 for my brakes. I really want 14 inch brakes because of the big wheels on the truck. I looked at Wilwood but the $4000 they need for 14 inch front and rear is a lot of money for a truck. I like the ZO6 setup Kore 3 offers......I made the mistake of ordering my wheels way too early in the build. The 5 x 5 bolt pattern was a real limitation.....cool thing is Kore 3 will drill the rotors to fit my wheels. I was working with very close tolerances because of those rear 24 inch wheels because once the truck lays down the tires are really close to the bedside at the top even after cutting out the inner bed liner. You ever notice wheels come down to 1/4 inch tolerance. I swear every time I put wheels on something I am trying to squeeze as much in as possible. I decided this morning to pull the bed off the truck to do some additional trimming in the wheel wells. We have trailer fenders in the back and they still had a lip on the inside edge so I wanted to cut it off. I was going to lift it off with a few guys but I thought why not try the forklift. We extended the forks with some 2 x 6's, got some straps and raised the bed off the frame. I could actually stand up with the wheel wheels above me and grind the edge off. That is some serious redneck fun. Oh ya, and if you see on the right I decided to buy my own welder instead of borrow one as I always have. I got it at Lowes and its the 230 volt Lincoln unit. For what we are doing I think it will be more than we need.
http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0190.jpg Next on the agenda was getting the hood hinges welded on. Since we had our new welder we had to weld something:devil: We removed the front tires and leveled the truck on jack stands, lined up the fenders and set the hood on. We already had the hinges mounted on the firewall.......with the tires off we had room to get up under the hood and mark where the brackets were suppose to go and removed the hood and welded the brackets on. Those bolts will disappear once we get everything welded in. The only problem with these hinges is you see them through the vented cowl on the truck. We decided we will close in the vents on each end of the cowl above the hinges so you can't see them. We are going to have to figure out where to put the gas shocks for the hood but at least we have a hinge on the hood. http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0188.jpg I curious how you guys mount your air ride equipment. I am really wanting to mount the pump, valves, and electronics on the frame of the truck. Maybe someplace high where we can have a mounting platform so I can conceal the wiring and stuff. I thought it would be better to have all this mounted on the frame so I could install all of it with the bed off. Any advice would be appreciated. Tomorrow we work on front fenders. I really like the SLOSH TUBZ but I had two more of the metal fenders that match the back. We'll be cutting them into the fenders tomorrow. I did have the idea of the panels on either side of the motor but I decided I did not want to hide the brakes and the tubular control arms. |
