Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

I've seen multiple threads for SPID pictures with the 67-72 trucks, but let's see some pictures of 73-87 SPID's.

In particular, does anyone have codes U63 (AM Radio) or A28 (sliding rear window) on their sheet? I want to see how they were worded, because I am adding them to my SPID when I have it re-done.

Here is mine for my 1978 with factory diesel.

You might notice that RPO codes: MX1, YF5, and B3J are Oldsmobile RPO codes.

I have a couple of dozen of these SPIDs. As I go through junkyards and find a squarebody that had some interesting options, I pull off the SPID. The first one I will post has a lot of weird stuff on it but is unusual in that it required a second page to print all the option. Look at the top of the second image and it says "PAGE 2". Not crazy rare, but how often do you see them?

76 K5, a few notables,
YG2 Wood grained exterior
N10 dual exhaust
Z82 Trailering special

This was also a basically zero emission control truck with only a PCV valve. No egr, no cats, no charcoal canister, (vented gas tank) and no smog pump, which is surprising considering its that far into the 70s.

Depending on the year or factory your truck was built, it'd be either in the glove box or on the driver's side inner fender in the engine compartment.

My RPO book shows:

A28 Window RR Full Width Sliding

The generic info packet in the GM Heritage Center archive shows:

A63 AM Radio

That may or may not be the way it is published on the SPID. In the absense of further detail that would be a good starting point.

The "2" at the beginning of the VIN indicates it is Canadian built, as well as the "1" for the plant code (1=Oshawa). I'm not sure what you have circled.

Canadian built for US consumption (does not have RPO Z49 Candian equipment).

Yes - if you send them your VIN and $50 you will receive the invoice for your specific truck, complete with the specific RPO content and pricing.

It will look like this:

http://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/.../Invoice-1.jpg

only hopefully they spelled your original owner's name correctly. ;)

Sure. Sept 16, 1985 calendar year would be the start of the 1986 model year. The new models typically come out in the September-ish timeframe.

A relatively early build, apparently. VINs start at 100001 and yours is in the 113,000 range.

My truck was built a year later (almost to the day) in Flint Michigan. Built on Sept 29, 1986 (1987 model) and they had already built more than 317,000 units in Flint.

did camper labels come on every truck? mine has one also but not sure if it really had a camper or it would have shown in the SPID right?

thefraze_1020 04-30-2014 04:02 PM

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

A Camper Special package would be shown on the SPID, because it had heavier-duty rear springs and tie downs.

Every 81-87 I've seen has had the camper sticker in the glovebox, regardless of whether it has the camper package or not.

Keith:

Was it 1983 that the SPID font was changed?

And what year was the SPID made smaller, showing only the codes and not the descriptions?

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

So, all of this SPID talk has me wondering how to get a new SPID label. Mine is pretty beat up, and I'd like a new one made. I know that there's a member here that makes new 67-72 SPID labels at www.outintheshop.com.

Does anyone know if he makes them for 73-87 trucks? I'm going to shoot him a message, but I figured I'd ask here as well.

thefraze_1020 04-30-2014 05:02 PM

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

What year is your truck? As long as your SPID is the same style/font as the 67-72 ones, Jeff should be able to make it. Off the top of my head, a believe that style was used through 1982. He can only make that style. I have been talking to him about it recently.

rudey737 04-30-2014 05:18 PM

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

I have an 84 C10. It looks like I probably missed the cut off. I sent him a message, so I will see what he has to say. Between him talking to you and me, we should be able to find something out.

thefraze_1020 04-30-2014 06:18 PM

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

Mine's an '84 as well. But I actually prefer the older style SPID, so I'm going to have him do an older one, changing a few options to reflect the changes I'm making to the truck.

He warned me that I will be a very expensive obvious fake, but I don't care because I don't plan to sell the truck for big $$$ any time soon.

This is correct. Mine is not a camper special, either.

This I am not sure about and would have to check into. There may have been some plant-to-plant variation even within the same model year.

We might be able to discern that from this thread once we have more entries.

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

Here's a couple more to add ...

My 77 GMC Sierra:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps6e3cfdf1.jpg

And Dad's 77 GMC Sierra Classic:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps5e744c89.jpg

A few things I noticed when comparing the two:

(1) Both trucks were equipped with factory dual exhaust but it's only listed on the SPID in mine. That's because (according to the 77 truck info kit from the GM Heritage Center) it was automatically included with the LF4 400 engine in Dad's truck.

(2) Both trucks were also equipped with the Z53 gauge cluster but again, it's only listed on the SPID in mine. Turns out that's included with the YE9 Sierra Classic Equipment. And I also found it interesting that it was still being listed as "GAUGES - AMMETER, OIL" even though these trucks changed over to voltmeters in 76.

(3) My 77 was built in Oshawa and Dad's was built in Flint. As a result, you can see some variations in the way they were typed up. Like how the "MODEL TK10903" is listed. And how the option numbers on mine are lined up near the right side of the column, while on Dad's they're aligned to the left of the column (and have a 1 prefix).

(4) Finally, they are both GMC's but neither one of them has the Z88 "GMC Conversion" code as described in this thread --> http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=621909&page=2
I guess some assembly plants just didn't bother listing that on the SPID.

Keith Seymore 05-02-2014 10:07 PM

Re: Squarebody SPID Picture Thread

Good eye, Ray.

Relative to the GMC option, it is a little redundant since the "T" at the beginning of the model number (ie "TK10903") also denotes GMC.

However - in my mind - it should also have had Z88 on the SPID. Seems like a factory mistake to me; I would have taken them to task on that one.

By the squarebody era, was there really any advantage (besides looks) to spending an extra $50 to buy a GMC instead of a Chevy?

Was there really any difference between them from 1973 on?

I'm not hating on GMC's, but I'm just curious.

Nope. Just emblems. Same engines, same option content.

The only advantage would be if your local dealer was a Buick/Pontiac dealer and sold GMC trucks rather than Chevys.
