1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Hey guys, I've bought myself a 1988 R30 and figured I start a build thread. I have been a c10/c30 fan for a long time and have a relatively stock 1962 single cab long bed c10 back home in ND that was going to get the Porterbuilt treatment but the added complexity of the X frame and lack of a welder kept that project on the back-burner.
The plan for this truck is bagged, 22" semis, and a body drop. I'm going the Porterbuilt route up front and probably MMW 4 link out back. I have my Dropmember on order with a build time of 4-10 weeks. I plan on ordering some stock sized aftermarket lower arms when the Dropmember gets closer to being done but may end up redoing it with extended arms in the future. I want to be able to run bagged on stock rims until I can order the semis, hence the stock sized arms now. Would also love to do a Cummins swap but donor availability will be the deciding factor there, I have a 1980 Trans am I'm trying to sell to pay for that. Here is the truck and I will try and keep this updated as things change. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps12292aac.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbb255cb6.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps5447f4ae.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psc19398aa.jpg Its has a 454 and TH400(with a tailshaft leak) and the power steering gearbox leaks! I live in south Las Vegas and am currently baggin my toyota so we'll see how it all fits in timewise between both trucks. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps83c2cb29.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1ef374ed.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdc11cf7e.jpg |

I like your plans, I'll be watching this build,

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I'm in Vegas for the next few years and just picked up a c30 yesterday and have some similar plans as yours. Let me know if you need some help cause I'm southwest Vegas and love working on these trucks

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I'll keep you in mind! I gotta get my Toyota done before my dropmember is done so I have 'room' in the garage. Gonna have to pull it in sideways.
If you ever need a hand hit me up, I work nights Thursday thru Sunday so most afternoons work Your truck looks awesome! |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I miss all the gorgeous clean iron I saw when I lived there.
Is there much for regular car shows/meets in that town? I missed the big rat rod show when I was there a couple weeks ago, and when I lived there I was to busy with school to get into the car/truck scene |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
So far I have been too absorbed with work to really dig into what goes on, I think there is a cars and coffee meet near me on saturdays but that has been unconfirmed. I would love to hit up anything local but I haven't heard of much and don't have any car scene connections yet.
For being such a busy town I would assume there would be activities but I am kinda surprised I don't hear of anything. I went to a truck show in socal but that is it. Its actually kinda depressing, one of my biggest gripes about living in North Dakota was the lack of anything motorsports but I haven't been blown away yet in LV. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Finally a brief update!
Parts are arriving and getting organized. Still working on the toyota and haven't gotten much done due to lots of overtime at work. Hoping to get back on the toyota so I can start on the Dually. Porterbuilt http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pskqlnpnbr.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psjz4f9iwp.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psvwakc33r.jpg Western spindles http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psypllildw.jpg Most of the MMW stuff showed up fairly rusty. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pshzejiuex.jpg Front bags are enroute, still gotta decide on rears. I want to go over the axle for weight so maybe a HD sleeved bag, gotta find something. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I think you're gonna need a longer driveway...

Truck is going to somehow fit in the garage sideways for this build, I really don't want to remove the cab but common sense says it will at least have to be lifted straight up for access. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Can't wait to see it all on the dually.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I think I finally found a donor for my engine.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspj5aojuk.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psl4iikrwl.jpg Its a 98 12V cummins motor and probably a at545 Allison trans with air-ride and airbrakes, I would assume it has an onboard compressor built in. I am going to check it out this weekend. I am finally cleaning out my garage to get started on my dually as well. I got my toyota finished and have been itching to get this thing started. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pskd8mcqqv.jpg Already picked up the 4"x3" .240 wall steel for the SFBD. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psuzizjaw4.jpg And got most everything ordered to convert the SRW 14B axle I picked up to disc brakes using the Dually hubs, making it C&C length when everything is done. I just gotta find somewhere to park one of my vehicle so I can park my dually in the garage sideways! I am working on that now. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I'm in! Looks like a good plan, can't wait to see more!

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Yay! Donor vehicle! Now get on it man! I'm excited!
|
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Flew to ND and drove over to pick up the donor in Iowa on Friday.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psczmrnlmp.jpg Back in ND i removed it yesterday. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslmn5ydrp.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslb9pklkv.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pszecc6tpw.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psep7zn8mj.jpg Working alone sucked but at least I had help when wiggling it out. I have to finish getting little things off the bus to help with the install and make a cradle to palletize the drivetrain for easy moving. I didn't cut anything but a water hose so all the wiring and miscellaneous stuff is intact, was extra work but I hope its worth it. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
This truck is gonna be sweet , I followed similar builds on duallyscene. They definitely look killer

This looks like it is going to be fun

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Put some money down on a set of six Semis from Lowboy Motorsports
He's supposed to be cutting them this weekend and I'll go pick them up. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pszdoxfeag.jpg |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Lowboy cut my 24's also. Very cool guy...
|
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I need to come check out your progress sometime slim! I am in the eastern/serene area.
|
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I'm slowly getting everything lined up to get this thing started.
Its gonna be interesting as I need find somewhere to park one or two other vehicles so I can make room in the garage to slide this pig in sideways and get started. I have a pretty strict HOA so everything has to be done behind closed doors in my 3 car garage which makes things very tight on work space. I'm heading back to ND where the motor is to do some farm hauling between California and Wisconsin and hope to get it hauled here in Vegas on one of the return trips. I am probably going to need a pickup manifold instead of the bus manifold, the bus piece seems like it will put the turbo too far back. |

You could get a large storage if you have the means so you're not trying to do it in your garage. My c30 is a desert truck with tons of dirt so I couldn't use my garage if I wanted to, besides its my gym. My storage is large enough to work on two of my projects and store all my tools. http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps774520b6.jpg |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
That's kinda what I was thinking on the adapters.
I'll have to get some info on your storage, places I've use don't allow much wrenching. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Mind me asking what the wheels cost and what he charges to cut them down? I have a couple to get done but need a couple more for my build. I can't find anyone in ca that can do it and AZ is closer than TN is for shipping.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
PM sent.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Can't wait to see the semis on. are they 22s or 24s?
|
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I ordered 22"s, I hope I don't regret it but they should be way better on space and for a more DD truck. The 24"s seem like just enough extra work to be not worth it.
Ordered adapters today, should ship on Friday and I think I will run to Mesa and get the wheels on Friday too. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Yeah I think 24s would of been over kill, the 22s will look great! Can't wait to see them on!
|
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
It all depends on what tire you wear on here that would cause more work. Exactly what size tire are you going with? I'm using a 285/30/24 and not expecting anymore serious work to make them squat down on

It will all have to be hashed out when I get everything mocked up and see where I'm at. I know a lot of people are running a 265/35/22 which ends up around a 29" tall tire(which is what a normal truck/dropmember'd usually has). I really like LILJLOWRIDER's truck which has a 285/40/22 which coincidentally is the same as your 285/30/24 at 31". Theoretically the larger sidewall 'should' ride better but we shall see. The 24"s do look better :waah: |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Got them home
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psuwctfezs.jpg Adapters should've shipped today or will ship Monday. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Sweet!

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Man. Send me a wheel so I can show my machine shop what and where to cut so i can get mine down. Please? ! Lol.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
Got the adapters in.
http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psefi7xv0x.jpg They fit haha http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbxte1muj.jpg and heavy http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7mburdmb.jpg But lighter than the wheels, 42 lbs. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...pscn3homvd.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...psd8xcp15q.jpg After seeing a dropped square at Lowboy Motorsports with a CabnChassis width axle I might just use the SRW 14B as is. The CnC axle pulled the wheels in a little too far for my liking. When I get some space in the garage I will mock up the SRW axle with adapters/semi wheels and take some measurements and compare them the to the fender width with pictures. I have to tear the SRW axle ends apart for disc brakes so I may mount the dually hubs on the SRW axle and make the CnC width axle and take some measurements with the semis for forum data. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
So....u gonna send me a wheel ? If not...lol. maybe take some pics and measurements for me on the milling so I can try an get mine done without having to ship them out .... Pls ?? Lol

Got it home, if only I could stick around and get started. Getting it out of the back of a semi-trailer with a cherry picker was very interesting.

Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
I'm finally home and back to thinking about this thing constantly.
I am going to be ordering tires this week and I think I'm going with a 265/40r22. How is everyone getting these mounted? By hand or machine? Still looking for a transmission and adapter to get the motor stuff lined up. |
Re: 1988 R30 Crew Soon to be Dropped
i'm in. :metal: :metal:
