72 Jimmy build
5 Attachment(s)
Bought this 72 from another member in Oklahoma a couple years ago and brought it home to south Mississippi. I had just completed a 69 C-10 so I had to enjoy it on a budget for a while. As soon as I could I began removing the rust and bringing her back to life. As always, there is still plenty to do and more to come as I get more time (who am I kidding, we all make time when we actually have the money). Hope yall enjoy...

Rust removal

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Sanded, grinded, cut out all the rust I could. Primed all the areas. Cut new bed floor panels out of plate. Primed the sided to face down twice. Welded in all the panels and welded new brackets for new buckets on order.

Replaced rockers and quarters in front of rear tires. Put the (new to me) 35x13.50 - R17 Mickey Thompson and rims on. Brought her outside to prepare for Raptor Lining.

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Now my neck hurts from looking at the pictures!
Interesting idea on the plate floor. Must be fairly thick to reduce oil canning? |
Re: 72 Jimmy build
I stopped posting until I figure out how to put my head on straight, any suggestions?
1/8" steel plate. |
Re: 72 Jimmy build
Nice work! Good looking Jimmy! :metal:

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Thanks green. I was fearing being attacked by some of the purists who believe stock and pretty paint is the only option. 2 dogs and thin trails to the sand bar predict otherwise for my purposes. After I figure out the 90 degree pic situation I will post more

Re: 72 Jimmy build
I was just kidding around about the pics!
If you use a hosting site like photobucket it has tools to turn your pictures the way you want, and doesn't screw up the links. I think everyone should build their truck the way they want. Why waste time and money if you, the end user, won't enjoy it? |
Re: 72 Jimmy build
nice jimmy, nice work , im a stock looking blazer with a lift guy but respect and enjoy various k5/jimmy builds

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Oh I stopped posting because I think the work deserves to seen without holding the laptop sideways haha. I have thoroughly enjoyed the transformation. Just finished putting a new power steering gear box on the Jimmy about 30 minutes ago. Got a great neighbor who loves to help.

Here's the 69 C10 I did as a learning process before finding the Jimmy. Miss that one...

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Now I have the moral dilemma of continuing to post sideways and hoping IronCanine fixes the rest

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Not really...it's a small price for more Blazer(or Jimmy) progress pics...can't get enough.

Out with the old power steering gear box and in with the new. Bled the system and man what a difference. I swear these things drive better than new trucks.

Had the Raptor Liner color matched to the seats. Prepped and sprayed the hard top. Have the eye bolts backed with 1/4" plate for lifting. Honestly the top rarely leaves the yard. 90% of the enjoyment of driving is going topless.

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Also rented a hot water pressure washer from my good friends at Hertz rental company today. That machine took about 15 minutes to remove 42 years of grime and grit from the underside. Come to find out, she had Rancho 5000 shocks but were so black it was anybody's guess.

Re: 72 Jimmy build
I have been thinking about doing the same thing with my top as far as lifting it that way, would you be willing to share some pics of the inside? does it seem pretty secure when you lift it?
|
Re: 72 Jimmy build
I sure will, but it will be a few days before I get back to the shop. Got a couple pulleys run to a side wind winch from harbor freight.

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Ordered a new set of Bilstein shocks today. Spent several nights scouring the Internet to find the best price. I have the part numbers for shocks with a 4" lift and can tell yall the website to get all 4 shipped for $280 if that isn't against the rules.

New shocks are here. Should be a big improvement over the Rancho 5000 that didn't move when I unbolted them...
|
Re: 72 Jimmy build
I'd be interested in the part numbers and website, don't think that's against the rules. Do they make them for a 2" lift? Thanks

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Wish they made Bilsteins for a stock K5 4x4. Needing new shocks very soon. Wanted the best.

Re: 72 Jimmy build
As soon as the infant wakes me up tonight I will research for you

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Ordered Dorman exhaust manifolds for a corvette as suggested here on the site. Also want to order HEI, plugs and wires as a kit. Does anyone know if the proper kit exists or who sells it. 350 V8.
|
Re: 72 Jimmy build
Did you ever find out if they actually did make Bilsteins for a stock K5?
|
Re: 72 Jimmy build
I did not. I will check on that tonight. Sorry man. Slipped my mind. 2wd or 4wd
|
Re: 72 Jimmy build
4X4. Thanks.
|
Re: 72 Jimmy build
Yep. 4wheel parts. 77.57 each. 18002575629 ext. 5136. Alan
No I do not wor for them....I pay all of their bills tho. |
Re: 72 Jimmy build
Even better. Ask sellers questions first so you don't blame me if something is wrong...
Ebay Item # 141230471962 pair rear $117 Item # 131146042039 pair front $ 130 Both free Shipping. |
Re: 72 Jimmy build
You can get pre-made wires for either type distributor that run underneath the manifolds. Easy way is to order for a Corvette. '73 for points type distributor cap or '75 for an HEI style cap. I like the Taylor premade ones, but I put MSD street wires on my '69 short step.

Got the 800 lb electric hoist from Harbor Freight at black Friday sale and installed it today. Works like a charm so far.

Re: 72 Jimmy build
Had to pay extra to hang it sideways like that

Here's a view from the inside using 1/4" flat bar as backing plates for the eye bolts.
